Background
In 2006, the Ministry of Labour (MOL) made significant changes to the confined space regulations in Ontario. Many Ontario businesses continue to struggle with the implementation of the new requirements. Challenges commonly include the interpretation of the definition of “confined space”, improper classification of spaces, poor documentation and ineffective training. In 2011, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) released a new standard, “Z1006 - Management of Work in Confined Spaces” which provides useful guidance to assist organizations in effectively managing this potentially high risk work.
