Sotheby's Canada, in partnership with XL Insurance, hosted a private preview and VIP cocktail reception of Sotheby's fall sale of Important Canadian Art at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto on Nov. 23. Guests were treated to sale highlights and tips for bidding at auction with Sotheby's Canada president David Silcox. One night after the reception, an art auction featuring painted works by Jean Paul Lemieux, Alex Colville and Jack Bush fetched more than $7.8 million. The Lemieux painting Country Club surpassed expectations when it was sold for $1.095 million. Its presale estimate was between $400,000 and $600,000. The rare James Wilson Morrice canvas entitled Evening Stroll, Venice vaulted past its presale estimate of $250,000 to $350,000 when it sold for just under $1.5 million.

Hollywood actor James Woods was on hand to help CARSTAR Automotive Canada Inc. celebrate the grand opening of its 16,000-square-foot new head office in Hamilton. Following the grand opening, the company hosted more than 600 guests at a casino-themed event in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CFC). With help from Woods, Sam Mercanti, CARSTAR's president and CEO, presented a cheque for $101,250 to CFC. The donation was raised throughout the year based on various events and fundraisers held by the company and its franchise partners. Over the past 10 years, CARSTAR has raised more than $1.9 million to fund research and treatment for Cystic Fibrosis. Dubbed 'CARSTAR Vision Park,' the new building houses CARSTAR University, the company's learning and research centre. It also serves as a central hub for franchise partners to give their management and repair employees up-to-date, hands on technical training and classroom learning sessions. CARSTAR Care Centre - which provides support to CARSTAR's franchise and insurance partners, as well as assistance to customers in event of an accident - will also be located in the facility.

York Fire & Casualty Insurance Company is now Unica Insurance Incorporated and will operate under the Unica brand name, the company announced on Nov. 14. The rebranding of York follows its acquisition in 2008 by La Capitale General Insurance, one of Quebec's largest P&C insurers. The company reiterated what it called its "steadfast commitment" to the broker distribution channel. "We do things a little differently than other insurance companies and this translates into big value for our customers," said Martin Delage, president and chief operating officer of Unica. "Our new name, Unica, reflects the unique nature of our company and our continued commitment as a dependable, Canadian company."

The 56th Annual Black Tie Dinner of the Toronto Insurance Conference (TIC) was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto on Nov. 10. Guest speaker was Stephen Lewis, one of the world's most influential speakers on human rights, social justice and international development. Formerly a United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, he has been named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People In The World - in the same category as The Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.

More than 350 delegates and 60 exhibiting companies attended Business Information Group's inaugural, two day International Sites and Spills Expo, held at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario on Nov. 3-4, 2011. Featuring three tracks of conference speakers, the event was the first of its kind to combine hazardous materials management and site remediation with cleanup and sustainability. The Honourable Mike Harcourt, former premier of British Columbia and mayor of Vancouver, discussed how his belief in conservation and sustainable development has shaped his career both in and out of elected office. Harcourt dedicated himself to helping British Columbia earn its reputation as one of the most livable, accessible and inclusive places in the world.

WICC Ontario Chapter held its annual Breakfast for Cancer on Nov. 2 at the Arcadian Court in Toronto. More than 450 insurance industry supporters attended the sold-out event. They heard the personal and courageous story of John Sylvester, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 when they found a tumour the size of an eggplant on his kidney. Fortunately the cancer had not spread. Surgery removed the tumour and John didn't require any radiation or chemotherapy. He was one of the lucky ones. John is a professional photographer and a contributor to PhotoSensitive's Cancer Connections Project, a photo exhibit that documents the effects of cancer on the lives of people living across Canada. WICC Ontario Chapter co-chair Jean Faulkner and executive director Barb Reddick presented a cheque for $56,000 to Martin Kabat, CEO of the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. This brought WICC Ontario's 2011 year-to-date funds donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to over $900,000.

Speakers from various ARC Group member law firms from across the country addressed a variety of related current topics, including: Obtaining Social Networking Site information on Discovery; Invasion of Privacy as a Tort; Privacy Legislation in Litigation & Surveillance; Libel & Slander in the E-Age; and Internal Email. Aon Benfield held its 10th annual Rendezvous on Oct. 19-21 at the Delta Meadowvale Resort. This event is unique in Canada and brought together 32 Canadian property and casualty and crop insurers with 56 reinsurers from around the globe. More than 400 treaty renewal meetings took place. Approximately 300 attendees also mingled at social events, including luncheons addressed by Leo Rautins, the first Canadian basketball player ever picked in the first round of the NBA draft, and Robert Hogue, a Senior Economist at RBC. Each evening included a cocktail hour, dinner and entertainment, which was provided by comedians Cory Kahaney and Jeff Caldwell. The final evening featured the Rendezvous' traditional Casino Night, highlighted by an always competitive Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament.

IBAC welcomed its new president, Dale Rempel, who succeeds immediate past president Fraser Lyle. In his inaugural address, Rempel called on brokers across the country to reach out to new MPs in Canada's new federal government. Delegates of the RIMS Canada Conference gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers during the Awards Lunch. The Ontario chapter of RIMS (ORIMS) presented the Donald M. Stuart Award to Glen Frederick, director of risk management client services (Core Government and Crowns) in the risk management branch of the Government of British Columbia. Frederick, in addition to being an active member of RIMS for more than 25 years, implemented a successful enterprise risk management strategy for the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to manage the risks associated with the 2010 Olympic Games. As a result of its success, the IOC now requires all future Olympic Games to implement an ERM strategy using a similar methodology. The annual Fred H. Bossons Award, which honours risk management professionals who earn the highest marks on three courses required to receive the Canadian Risk Management designation, went to Drew Collins of JEVCO Insurance. Donald Barrett became the fifth inductee of the Chartis/RIMS-Risk Management Hall of Fame.

The RIMS Canada Conference started with a keynote address by John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games. Known for his storytelling and innovative leadership style, Furlong recounted the lead-up to the Games and described how he handled seemingly insurmountable setbacks, including the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, a global recession and the washed-out snow at Cypress Bowl.

The 'Cycle for Wishes' team, comprised of members of the insurance industry, cycled from Toronto to Ottawa to the RIMS Canada Conference from Sept. 14 to Sept. 17, raising $52,349 for Make-A-Wish Canada. The Highlander Pub in Ottawa's ByWard Market served as the finish line. John Haas, the initiative's team leader and the managing principal at Integro Insurance's Canadian office, said the initial fundraising goal was $20,000. But response from the industry was so positive, the team doubled the goal to $40,000 and raised more than $52,000. A spokesperson for Make-AWish's Toronto office said it's the largest third-party fundraising effort she has seen. Haas said the team wanted to select a charity to benefit both cities. As the RIMS Canada Conference moves from city to city across the country, Haas hopes insurance industry members in the host regions follow suit to make it an annual event. "It's been truly a team effort, right down to the different cyclists and the key sponsors that have gotten involved," said Haas.

"It started out as an idea on a Sunday morning and grew into something bigger than I could have imagined. It's because everyone is really working together for this cause." Sovereign General Insurance Company partnered with the Canadian Tour on Aug. 22 to host the Sovereign Insurance International Team Matches Golf Tournament In Support of The Children's Wish Foundation. The event took place at the historic Scarborough Golf and Country Club in Toronto. The Canadian Tour has produced a number of PGA stars including past Masters Champion Mike Weir. The Canadian Tour-sanctioned event pitted three national teams of pros for a purse associated with the International Team Matches Cup. Foursomes paired with a pro from one of the three competing Canadian, U.S. or International teams. The inaugural Sovereign General Trophy was awarded to participating amateur winners. Through this event and others country-wide, Sovereign will raise over $250,000 for The Children's Wish Foundation in 2011.

The 2011 version of the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life featured the largest-ever number of insurance industry participants. The relay is a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. Teams of 10 people participated in the 12-hour, overnight, non-competitive relay, taking turns walking, running or strolling around a track. In Ontario, more than 785 friends and members of the insurance industry formed teams under the Team WICC banner in 13 different locations. More than 65 teams raised at least 5,000 donations totaling more than $368,000. Relay For Life is now WICC Ontario's largest fundraising activity.

The Ontario chapter of the Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association (CICMA) held its annual golf tournament at the Cardinal Golf Course in Newmarket, Ontario on June 24. This year, 296 golfers participated in the event, raising a total of $26,000 for Camp Oochigeas. The Ontario chapter of the CICMA has been supporting Camp Oochigeas for the past 16 years. The proceeds from the putting contest at the tournament were donated to the Douglas N. Hurlbut Award, a total of $750.

The Inaugural Belfor Cancer Ride took place on June 24. The industry motorcycle event was organized to help raise funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital's Weekend to End Woman's Cancers event that takes place in September. The event took riders on a scenic route through the Buckhorn, Ontario district and ended in the town of Bancroft, Ontario for an overnight stay. Participants helped raise more than $1,500 for the cause.

CARSTAR Collision Centres across North America broke their 2009 Guinness World Record for World's Largest Car Wash-Multiple Venues on June 11, 2011. More than 140 events throughout Canada and the United States supported CARSTAR's 'Soaps It Up' National Car Wash Fundraiser. At least

1,000 employees and volunteers participating in the event washed 4,918 cars, breaking the previous record of 4,105. "This year we are happy to report that, with the tremendous support of our franchise, insurance and vendor partners, and with the dedication of each community, we are donating more than $105,000 to Cystic Fibrosis Canada and local fundraising groups," said Sam Mercanti, president and CEO of CARSTAR Automotive Canada. For the past eight years, Canadian CARSTAR Collision Centres have been participating in the 'Soaps It Up' fundraiser. With the funds raised from this event, CARSTAR's total funds raised for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis is now more than $1.9 million.

Seventy Ontario young brokers attended the 7th Annual IBAO Young Brokers Council (YBC) Conference held in Niagara Falls on June 10, 2011. Speakers at the conference included Intact Insurance president Louis Gagnon, who spoke about the impact of Intact's acquisition of AXA Canada on brokers. The Economical president Katherine Mabe (who has since been succeeded by Karen Gavan) was on hand to talk about the company's proposed demutualization. Afterwards, delegates enjoyed a Casino-themed reception. Fifteen exhibitors ran the casino tables, providing guaranteed (poker?) face-to-face interaction between delegates and exhibitors.

The annual FM Global/United Way Dodgeball Tournament was held on June 4. In the finals, 'Charles Taylor Adjusters' took on the 'Average Winmars.' Charles Taylor had taken the title for the past two years, but the Average Winmars won the 2011 tournament. The Average Winmars donated their $500 first place prize to the United Way. The tournament donated a total of $6,446.40 to the United Way, taking into account FM Global corporate's 'double match' of tournament funds.

Chris Mathers, a crime, terrorism and money-laundering expert, riveted the crowd with his luncheon keynote address. Finally, delegates unwound at the end of the event with a networking and cocktail event.

A record turnout of more than 150 industry representatives attended the 52st Annual Reception of the Quarter Century Club on May 26 at the Hilton International in Toronto. The event was a roast for claims industry veteran Neno Cappadocio, senior vice president with Aon Canada. His career began 25 years ago with Travelers Canada, where he started out as a loss control consultant in the engineering division. Cappadocio eventually became the claims manager at Dale Intermediaries Ltd. Aon Reed Stenhouse acquired Dale in 1987, and Cappadocio has remained with Aon ever since.

Risk managers from across Ontario gathered at the Fairmont Royal York on May 19 for the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS). During the dinner event, ORIMS 2010-11 president April Savchuk passed the torch to ORIMS 2011-12 president Roman Parzei. The event also served as a fundraiser for the Japan relief effort. ORIMS raised $500 through the sale of red bracelets. It then matched the sum, bringing the total amount of the proceeds to $1,000.

The three-day event featured the IBAA's annual general meeting, as well as a keynote address by Jeremy Gutsche of TrendHunter.com. Gutsche's speech encouraged insurance industry representatives to find ways to innovate during times of change. Karen Rutherford, an insurance broker for 23 years and a consultant in adult education and risk management, led an education seminar on May 17, entitled Social Media: Should Brokers Be Pursuing Clients on Facebook?

More wishes will come true this year thanks to the 17th Annual Starlight Insurance Gala, held in support of Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation. Themed Nights in Marrakesh, the black tie event held at the Carlu in Toronto raised $175,000 on May 7. About 450 tables represented all segments of the industry. With his mother at his side, Tobin Haas addressed the audience, recounting his courageous fight against cancer. He talked about the discovery of his malignant brain tumor, the surgeries, treatments, recurrence and continued battle against the cancer. He also described how, in the midst of tiring treatments, his Starlight Wish was granted: He was able to attend the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

The event offered fellow Canadians a chance to catch up and sample appetizers with a Canuck flare, to the benefit of the William H. McGannon Foundation. Larry Shumka, president and CEO of SCM, presented a donation of $10,000 to McGannon Foundation president and director Joe Restoule. RIMS also donated $50,000 to the foundation, bringing the total amount of donations to $60,000 for the evening.

Risk professionals from around the world came to Vancouver between May 1 and 5 for the 2011 Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Annual Conference and Exhibition. During the opening general session on May 2, RIMS presented Glen Frederick [1], the director of risk management client services for the Government of British Columbia, with the prestigious Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award. The award is named in honour of the first RIMS president. It recognizes an individual who has furthered the goals of the society and the risk management discipline though outstanding service and achievement. Accolades for Canadians continued at the RIMS Award Luncheon on May 2. Janice McGraw [2], associate director of risk management and insurance at McGill University, and a member of RIMS' Quebec chapter, received the Ron Judd Heart of RIMS Award. The Heart of RIMS Award pays tribute to the legacy of Ron Judd, who served as RIMS executive director for 22 years. Individuals are nominated by chapters for outstanding performance in furthering risk management at the chapter level. RIMS also paid tribute to its chapters that have grown their respective memberships during 2010. WICC dinner co-chairs and evening emcees Michael Butler and Marian Adamson introduced WICC co-chairs Carolyn Horan and Jean Faulkner to present Martin Kabat, CEO of the Ontario division of the Canadian Cancer Society, with a cheque from WICC for $825,000. Gold Flame Awards, recognizing significant contributions to WICC, went to the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario, Risk Management Counsel of Canada, SIMAC Canada Inc. and Worden Insurance & Financial Services Ltd. Nancy Thorne and Debbie Cyr were 2010 WICC 'Hall of Flame' Award inductees. Lyna Newman, who was the executive director, board member and secretary of WICC Ontario for more than a decade, received the Lew Dunn Memorial Award. Marilyn Horrick, past dinner chair, introduced WICC Relay for Life co-chairs Paul Martin and Carla Smith, who spoke about the industry's commitment to the event and 2011 Relay for Life plans and goals. Since WICC's inception in 1996, the P&C industry has raised more than $5 million.

WICC Ottawa Chapter held a Sugar Bush Breakfast at the National Arts Centre on Apr. 1. More than 230 industry supporters came out to enjoy typical light sugar bush food fare, live music and even maple taffy on snow - in the middle of the city. Special guest Dawn Cooper, manager of the Canadian Cancer Society Ottawa unit, gave a presentation on local CCS initiatives and programs. Cooper accepted a $25,000 cheque from WICC, representing funds raised during the 2010 WICC Ottawa Chapter Wine and Cheese event on Oct. 28. An additional $8,500 was raised at the Sugar Bush Breakfast in support of WICC. The Breakfast Committee included Kimberley Jeffries,  Novatech; Samantha Iturregui, Kelly Santini LLP; and WICC Ottawa cochair and event chair Sylvie Tremblay, Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. Special recognition went to all other WICC Ottawa members, including Marcella MacDonald, WICC Ottawa co-chair and Wine and Cheese event chair, ENCON Group Inc., and Barb Reddick, WICC Ontario executive director.

The fourth annual St Baldrick's event was held on Mar. 10 at the Duke of Westminster Pub in Toronto. St Baldrick's started in the United States in 2000 when three reinsurance executives turned their annual St Patrick's Day party into a fundraiser for Childhood Cancer. Participants raise money by shaving their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer. In Canada, St Baldrick's has partnered with Childhood Cancer Canada so that all money raised stays in Canada. Proceeds go towards funding the most promising research projects for Childhood Cancer. Seventeen people volunteered to have their heads shaved this year. Participating companies included Travelers Canada, Marsh Canada, Liberty International Underwriters, Swiss Re, Creechurch and Beach and Associates. The final figure has yet to be finalized, but the efforts raised approximately $32,000 to $33,000.

The HKMB HUB Hockey Challenge for Charity dropped the puck on the 6th annual event on Mar. 7, raising funds for the United Way and WICC (Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade). This event has grown steadily since the inaugural game in 2006; this year, the six-team tournament at the Air Canada Center had more than 66 players, 30 major corporate sponsors and 300-plus spectators on hand to enjoy the hockey. The Accidental Benefits provided live music in the cozy atmosphere of the Ice Box Lounge, and musical recording artist Michael Burgess treated everyone to a hair-raising version of the national anthem. Dwight Drummond of CBC News dropped the ceremonial puck opening the tournament. Canadian sports broadcaster Gord Stellick was on hand as the celebrity MC for the evening. The event raised more than $30,000 for both charities.

The CIP Society, a division of The Insurance Institute of Canada, selected Paul Green, BA, FCIP, as the 2011 recipient of the Greater Toronto Area Fellow of Distinction Award. Green’s award was presented at The CIP Society’s Annual Fellows’ Reception at the National Club on Feb.3, 2011. It recognizes outstanding achievement in the insurance industry in Toronto. Colleagues nominate insurance professionals for The Fellow of Distinction Award, which is presented annually to a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP). At the reception , Heather Masterson, FCIP, chair of the CIP Society-Ontario said: “Paul’s dedication and contribution to the insurance industry over the past three decades has been exemplary. His expertise, combined with his enthusiasm for innovation, makes him a force to be reckoned with and a very worthy recipient of this award.” Currently vice president at the CG&B Group Inc., Green has more than 30 years of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry. He has strong marketing and underwriting knowledge in both personal and commercial lines. His extracurricular involvement with the industry has seen him in a variety of roles, including past president of the Insurance Institute of Ontario and regional vice-chair of the Insurance Institute of Canada (2004-05). He served on the IIO Governing Council from 1999 to 2006, and was a past member of the CIP Council of the Insurance Institute of Canada. Green has a long history of community and charitable involvement, including volunteer positions with United Way and the steering committee of WICC Relay for Life. The evening also recognized the recent graduates of the CIP Society-Ontario Council’s Fellows program.

Speakers included Tony Canadé (Assured Automotive, Toronto), departing CCIF chairman; Tom Bissonnette (Parr Autobody, Saskatoon), incoming CCIF chairman; Mike Bryan, CCIF administrator; Andrew Shepherd, Automotive Industries Association; Jerome Flanagan, Renewit Inc.; Norm Angrove, PPG Canada Inc.; Leanne Blackborow, CCIF Skills Program; Steve Fletcher of the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association (OARA); Pete Tagliapetra, NuGen IT; Kathryn Graham, Meyers Norris Penney LLP and Larry Miller, Fix Auto. On behalf of his association, OARA, Fletcher presented Blackborow of the CCIF Skills Program with a cheque for $37,000. This represented the single-largest contribution ever made to the CCIF Skills Program. It came from an association fund for supporting deserving causes, established by the recyclers’ “Retire Your Ride” program, to which OARA members contributed $35 per “retired” vehicle.
