Sotheby's Canada, in partnership with XL Insurance, hosted a private preview and VIP cocktail reception of Sotheby's fall sale of Important Canadian Art at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto on Nov. 23. Guests were treated to sale highlights and tips for bidding at auction with Sotheby's Canada president David Silcox. One night after the reception, an art auction featuring painted works by Jean Paul Lemieux, Alex Colville and Jack Bush fetched more than $7.8 million. The Lemieux painting Country Club surpassed expectations when it was sold for $1.095 million. Its presale estimate was between $400,000 and $600,000. The rare James Wilson Morrice canvas entitled Evening Stroll, Venice vaulted past its presale estimate of $250,000 to $350,000 when it sold for just under $1.5 million.
Hollywood actor James Woods was on hand to help CARSTAR Automotive Canada Inc. celebrate the grand opening of its 16,000-square-foot new head office in Hamilton. Following the grand opening, the company hosted more than 600 guests at a casino-themed event in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CFC). With help from Woods, Sam Mercanti, CARSTAR's president and CEO, presented a cheque for $101,250 to CFC. The donation was raised throughout the year based on various events and fundraisers held by the company and its franchise partners. Over the past 10 years, CARSTAR has raised more than $1.9 million to fund research and treatment for Cystic Fibrosis. Dubbed 'CARSTAR Vision Park,' the new building houses CARSTAR University, the company's learning and research centre. It also serves as a central hub for franchise partners to give their management and repair employees up-to-date, hands on technical training and classroom learning sessions. CARSTAR Care Centre - which provides support to CARSTAR's franchise and insurance partners, as well as assistance to customers in event of an accident - will also be located in the facility.
SCOR held its annual celebration of the Beaujolais Nouveau Wines release on Nov. 17, 2011 at the Rosewater Room in Toronto. While enjoying the company of industry colleagues, guests sampled a selection of the 2011 Beaujolais Nouveau wines in addition to gourmet offerings prepared by the Rosewater.

York Fire & Casualty Insurance Company is now Unica Insurance Incorporated and will operate under the Unica brand name, the company announced on Nov. 14. The rebranding of York follows its acquisition in 2008 by La Capitale General Insurance, one of Quebec's largest P&C insurers. The company reiterated what it called its "steadfast commitment" to the broker distribution channel. "We do things a little differently than other insurance companies and this translates into big value for our customers," said Martin Delage, president and chief operating officer of Unica. "Our new name, Unica, reflects the unique nature of our company and our continued commitment as a dependable, Canadian company."
The 56th Annual Black Tie Dinner of the Toronto Insurance Conference (TIC) was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto on Nov. 10. Guest speaker was Stephen Lewis, one of the world's most influential speakers on human rights, social justice and international development. Formerly a United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, he has been named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People In The World - in the same category as The Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.
Elliott Special Risks LP (ESR), a Markel International company, celebrated its 45th Anniversary in 2011. To celebrate, ESR held cocktail receptions in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. More than 350 delegates and 60 exhibiting companies attended Business Information Group's inaugural, two day International Sites and Spills Expo, held at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario on Nov. 3-4, 2011. Featuring three tracks of conference speakers, the event was the first of its kind to combine hazardous materials management and site remediation with cleanup and sustainability. The Honourable Mike Harcourt, former premier of British Columbia and mayor of Vancouver, discussed how his belief in conservation and sustainable development has shaped his career both in and out of elected office. Harcourt dedicated himself to helping British Columbia earn its reputation as one of the most livable, accessible and inclusive places in the world.

WICC Ontario Chapter held its annual Breakfast for Cancer on Nov. 2 at the Arcadian Court in Toronto. More than 450 insurance industry supporters attended the sold-out event. They heard the personal and courageous story of John Sylvester, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 when they found a tumour the size of an eggplant on his kidney. Fortunately the cancer had not spread. Surgery removed the tumour and John didn't require any radiation or
chemotherapy. He was one of the lucky ones. John is a professional photographer and a contributor to PhotoSensitive's Cancer Connections Project, a photo exhibit that documents the effects of cancer on the lives of people living across Canada. WICC Ontario Chapter co-chair Jean Faulkner and executive director Barb Reddick presented a cheque for $56,000 to Martin Kabat, CEO of the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. This brought WICC Ontario's 2011 year-to-date funds donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to over $900,000.
The ARC Group Canada held its 2011 seminar Litigation and Privacy Challenges in the Electronic Age on Oct. 27 in Toronto. Speakers from various ARC Group member law firms from across the country addressed a variety of related current topics, including: Obtaining Social Networking Site information on Discovery; Invasion of Privacy as a Tort; Privacy Legislation in Litigation & Surveillance; Libel & Slander in the E-Age; and Internal Email. Attendees had a chance to discuss these legal issues during a cocktail reception after the seminar.

Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) presented its 2011 Awards of Excellence during the Gala on the final night of its 91st Annual Convention in Toronto on Oct. 21. Aon Benfield held its 10th annual Rendezvous on Oct. 19-21 at the Delta Meadowvale Resort. This event is unique in Canada and brought together 32 Canadian property and casualty and crop insurers with 56 reinsurers from around the globe. More than 400 treaty renewal meetings took place. Approximately 300 attendees also mingled at social events, including luncheons addressed by Leo Rautins, the first Canadian basketball player ever picked in the first round of the NBA draft, and Robert Hogue, a Senior Economist at RBC. Each evening included a cocktail hour,
dinner and entertainment, which was provided by comedians Cory Kahaney and Jeff Caldwell. The final evening

A CIP and FCIP, Wahrer has spent the last 20 years of her extensive reinsurance career with Munich Re. She has been involved with the Insurance Institute and various industry associations, including the Property Casualty Underwriters Club (PCUC), for many years. Delegates of the 2011 National Insurance Conference of Canada (NICC) held in Vancouver, British Columbia enjoyed the opportunity to share refreshment and conversation during the opening night of the conference. The conference raised more than $21,000 through donations made in lieu of speaker gifts and a silent auction and raffle for WICC BC Chapter, the 2011 NICC's charity of choice.

The Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) held its 90th Annual General Meeting at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta on Sept. 22-24, 2011. IBAC welcomed its new president, Dale Rempel, who succeeds immediate past president Fraser Lyle. In his inaugural address, Rempel called on brokers across the country to reach out to new MPs in Canada's new federal government. In addition, IBAC recognized the dedicated work of several of its executive members.

Delegates of the RIMS Canada Conference gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers during the Awards Lunch. The Ontario chapter of RIMS (ORIMS) presented the Donald M. Stuart Award to Glen Frederick, director of risk management client services (Core Government and Crowns) in the risk management branch of the Government of British Columbia. Frederick, in addition to being an active member of RIMS for more than 25 years, implemented a successful enterprise risk management strategy for the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to manage the risks associated with the 2010 Olympic Games. As a result
of its success, the IOC now requires all future Olympic Games to implement an ERM strategy using a similar methodology. The annual Fred H. Bossons Award, which honours risk management professionals who earn the highest marks on three courses required to receive the Canadian Risk Management designation, went to Drew Collins of JEVCO Insurance. Donald Barrett became the fifth inductee of the Chartis/RIMS-Risk Management Hall of Fame.
The RIMS Canada Conference started with a keynote address by John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games. Known for his storytelling and innovative leadership style, Furlong recounted the lead-up to the Games and described how he handled seemingly insurmountable setbacks, including the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, a global recession and the washed-out snow at Cypress Bowl.

The 'Cycle for Wishes' team, comprised of members of the insurance industry, cycled from Toronto to Ottawa to the RIMS Canada Conference from Sept. 14 to Sept. 17, raising $52,349 for Make-A-Wish Canada. The Highlander Pub in Ottawa's ByWard Market served as the finish line. John Haas, the initiative's team leader and the managing principal at Integro Insurance's Canadian office, said the initial fundraising goal was $20,000. But response from the industry was so positive, the team doubled the goal to $40,000 and raised more than $52,000. A spokesperson for Make-AWish's Toronto office said it's the largest third-party fundraising effort she has seen. Haas said the team wanted to select a charity to benefit both cities. As the RIMS Canada Conference moves from city to city across the country, Haas hopes insurance industry members in the host regions follow suit to make it an annual event. "It's been truly a team effort, right down to the different cyclists and the key sponsors that have gotten involved," said Haas.
"It started out as an idea on a Sunday morning and grew into something bigger than I could have imagined. It's because everyone is really working together for this cause." More than 60 delegates joined together for a trade show, a day of education, a dinner cruise and the member meeting. At the President's Banquet
& Ball, Greg Merrithew took over the reins as president of the association for the 2011-12 year. He succeeds outgoing president Mary Charman.
Sovereign General Insurance Company partnered with the Canadian Tour on Aug. 22 to host the Sovereign Insurance International Team Matches Golf Tournament In Support of The Children's Wish Foundation. The event took place at the historic Scarborough Golf and Country Club in Toronto. The Canadian Tour has produced
a number of PGA stars including past Masters Champion Mike Weir. The Canadian Tour-sanctioned event pitted three national teams of pros for a purse associated with the International Team Matches Cup. Foursomes paired with a pro from one of the three competing Canadian, U.S. or International teams. The inaugural Sovereign General Trophy was awarded to participating amateur winners. Through this event and others country-wide, Sovereign will raise over $250,000 for The Children's Wish Foundation in 2011.
More than 150 guests boarded the Yankee Lady III for a four-hour tour of the Toronto harbour. The third annual event, co-sponsored by Winmar Toronto/Brampton and Gilbertson Davis Emerson LLP, raised $5,000 for Kerry's
Place Autism Services. The cruise, held Aug. 18, provided guests not only the opportunity to raise money for a
valuable cause, but mix and mingle with insurance professionals, friends and colleagues over lunch and cocktails.
More than 220 golfers attended the 12th annual WICC Ontario Golf Tournament on July 11 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario. Attendees enjoyed a barbeque lunch, silent auction, raffle and dinner. A WICC cheque for $250,000 was presented to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The 2011 version of the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life featured the largest-ever number of insurance industry participants. The relay is a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. Teams of 10 people participated in the 12-hour, overnight, non-competitive relay, taking turns walking, running or strolling around a track. In Ontario, more than 785 friends and members of the insurance industry formed teams under the Team WICC banner in 13 different locations. More than 65 teams raised at least 5,000 donations totaling more than $368,000. Relay For Life is now WICC Ontario's largest fundraising activity.
The Ontario chapter of the Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association (CICMA) held its annual golf tournament at the Cardinal Golf Course in Newmarket, Ontario on June 24. This year, 296 golfers participated in the event, raising a total of $26,000 for Camp Oochigeas. The Ontario chapter of the CICMA has been supporting Camp Oochigeas for the past 16 years. The proceeds from the putting contest at the tournament were donated to the Douglas N. Hurlbut Award, a total of $750.
The Inaugural Belfor Cancer Ride took place on June 24. The industry motorcycle event was organized to help raise funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital's Weekend to End Woman's Cancers event that takes place in September. The event took riders on a scenic route through the Buckhorn, Ontario district and ended in the town of Bancroft, Ontario for an overnight stay. Participants helped raise more than $1,500 for the cause.
Great American Insurance Group set sail aboard the Captain Matthew flinders on June 23 for a cruise around the Toronto Harbour. The day of fun, hosted by the Property & Inland Marine Executive Liability and Fidelity & Crime Divisions, was held in appreciation of their supporting brokers in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) held its annual golf tournament on June 21 at Deer Creek Golf Club in Ajax, Ontario. Three hundred and thirty two golfers attended the event, which included a raffle that raised $3,410 in support of the Junior Achievement Risk Management Student Day Seminar.
More than 350 Toronto-area brokers attended a June 21 reception hosted by ENCON at the Steam Whistle Brewery. CARSTAR Collision Centres across North America broke their 2009 Guinness World Record for World's Largest Car Wash-Multiple Venues on June 11, 2011. More than 140 events throughout Canada and the United States supported CARSTAR's 'Soaps It Up' National Car Wash Fundraiser. At least
1,000 employees and volunteers participating in the event washed 4,918 cars, breaking the previous record of 4,105. "This year we are happy to report that, with the tremendous support of our franchise, insurance and vendor partners, and with the dedication of each community, we are donating more than $105,000 to Cystic Fibrosis Canada and local fundraising groups," said Sam Mercanti, president and CEO of CARSTAR Automotive Canada. For the past eight years, Canadian CARSTAR Collision Centres have been participating in the 'Soaps It Up' fundraiser. With the funds raised from this event, CARSTAR's total funds raised for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis is now more than $1.9 million.
Seventy Ontario young brokers attended the 7th Annual IBAO Young Brokers Council (YBC) Conference held in Niagara Falls on June 10, 2011. Speakers at the conference included Intact Insurance president Louis Gagnon, who spoke about the impact of Intact's acquisition of AXA Canada on brokers. The Economical president Katherine Mabe (who has since been succeeded by Karen Gavan) was on hand to talk about the company's proposed demutualization. Afterwards, delegates enjoyed a Casino-themed reception. Fifteen exhibitors ran the casino tables, providing guaranteed (poker?) face-to-face interaction between delegates and exhibitors.
The annual FM Global/United Way Dodgeball Tournament was held on June 4. In the finals, 'Charles Taylor Adjusters' took on the 'Average Winmars.' Charles Taylor had taken the title for the past two years, but the Average Winmars won the 2011 tournament. The Average Winmars donated their $500 first place prize to the United Way. The tournament donated a total of $6,446.40 to the United Way, taking into account FM Global corporate's 'double match' of tournament funds.
Friends, family and colleagues of the late, great Doug Hurlbut came together for Dougstock III - a celebration of his life, friendship and much missed camaraderie. The event, La(r)ger Than Life, was held at the Pilot Tavern on June 3. Friends and colleagues were treated to stories and memories of Doug, as well as some live music in his honour.
Key executives of the insurance industry attended the 2011 Canadian Insurance Financial Forum at Toronto's Metro Convention Centre on May 26. Industry veteran Graham Segger, a recently retired partner at Deloitte & Touche, was the master of ceremonies. The high-level discussion focused on topics including perspectives on financial management, managing mergers and acquisitions, CFO challenges and optimizing investment portfolios. Chris Mathers, a crime, terrorism and money-laundering expert, riveted the crowd with his luncheon keynote address. Finally, delegates unwound at the end of the event with a networking and cocktail event.
The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) hosted a Basement Flooding Symposium on May 26, bringing together representatives of the insurance industry and municipalities. Held at The Board of Trade in Toronto, more than 140 industry stakeholders learned about the causes and complexities of basement flooding, mitigative best practices, how various municipalities have dealt with the increased frequency of floods and insurers' concerns about the issue. Lunch speaker William Blakeney of Blakeney Henneberry Murphy & Galligan discussed the historical legal challenges of sewer backup claims.
A record turnout of more than 150 industry representatives attended the 52st Annual Reception of the Quarter Century Club on May 26 at the Hilton International in Toronto. The event was a roast for claims industry veteran Neno Cappadocio, senior vice president with Aon Canada. His career began 25 years ago with Travelers Canada, where he started out as a loss control consultant in the engineering division. Cappadocio eventually became the claims manager at Dale Intermediaries Ltd. Aon Reed Stenhouse acquired Dale in 1987, and Cappadocio has remained with Aon ever since.
Canpro Global hosted its annual client appreciation Jazz Night on the rooftop pavilion of the Vancouver Art Gallery on May 25. The Scott Robertson Trio provided the smooth sounds of jazz while those attending enjoyed delicious food and drink. The evening was in support of Japan's Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. Proceeds from the Canpro Foundation went to the International Red Cross.
Risk managers from across Ontario gathered at the Fairmont Royal York on May 19 for the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS). During the dinner event, ORIMS 2010-11 president April Savchuk passed the torch to ORIMS 2011-12 president Roman Parzei. The event also served as a fundraiser for the Japan relief effort. ORIMS raised $500 through the sale of red bracelets. It then matched the sum, bringing the total amount of the proceeds to $1,000.
More than 65 exhibitors turned out for the trade show and strolling dinner opening the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta (IBAA)'s 2011 Annual Convention in Jasper, Alberta on May 15. The three-day event featured the IBAA's annual general meeting, as well as a keynote address by Jeremy Gutsche of TrendHunter.com. Gutsche's speech encouraged insurance industry representatives to find ways to innovate during times of change. Karen Rutherford, an insurance broker for 23 years and a consultant in adult education and risk management, led an education seminar on May 17, entitled Social Media: Should Brokers Be Pursuing Clients on Facebook?
More wishes will come true this year thanks to the 17th Annual Starlight Insurance Gala, held in support of Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation. Themed Nights in Marrakesh, the black tie event held at the Carlu in Toronto raised $175,000 on May 7. About 450 tables represented all segments of the industry. With his mother at his side, Tobin Haas addressed the audience, recounting his courageous fight against cancer. He talked about the discovery of his malignant brain tumor, the surgeries, treatments, recurrence and continued battle against the cancer. He also described how, in the midst of tiring treatments, his Starlight Wish was granted: He was able to attend the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
The Insurance Brokers of Toronto Region (IBTR) held its annual Friendship Night on May 3. The Spirale banquet Hall in Toronto was once again the venue for the annual mix-and-mingle for brokers, CSRs, producers, insurers, underwriters and a wide spectrum of industry vendors and suppliers.

The 2011 RIMS Conference and Exhibition was held on 'home turf' in Vancouver, but that didn't stop Canadian delegates from gathering for Canada Night, sponsored by SCM Insurance Services and the Canadian Litigation Counsel. The event offered fellow Canadians a chance to catch up and sample appetizers with a Canuck flare, to the benefit of the William H. McGannon Foundation. Larry Shumka, president and CEO of SCM, presented a donation of $10,000 to McGannon Foundation president and director Joe Restoule. RIMS also donated $50,000 to the foundation, bringing the total amount of donations to $60,000 for the evening.
FirstOnSite Restoration hosted a RIMS Vancouver luncheon at Joey Bentall One on May 3. On offer was FirstOnSite's exclusive "Fire" martini; a luncheon buffet for invited guests; a chance to chat with members of FirstOnSite's commercial division; and NHL hockey towels. The team from FirstOnSite wore hockey jerseys representing their branch locations across the country. Since RIMS took place during NHL playoffs, even the Toronto team towels were well received in Vancouver.

Held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, the show floor bustled with thousands of delegates from throughout North America and around the globe. The booths offered unlimited opportunities for learning, networking and sharing.
Risk professionals from around the world came to Vancouver between May 1 and 5 for the 2011 Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Annual Conference and Exhibition. During the opening general session on May 2, RIMS presented Glen Frederick [1], the director of risk management client services for the Government of British Columbia, with the prestigious Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award. The award is named in honour of the first RIMS president. It recognizes an individual who has furthered the goals of the society and the risk management discipline though outstanding service and achievement. Accolades for Canadians continued at the RIMS Award Luncheon on May 2. Janice McGraw [2], associate director of risk management and insurance at McGill University, and a member of RIMS' Quebec chapter, received the Ron Judd Heart of RIMS Award. The Heart of RIMS Award pays tribute to the legacy of Ron Judd, who served as RIMS executive director for 22 years. Individuals are nominated by chapters for outstanding performance in furthering risk management at the chapter level. RIMS also paid tribute to its chapters that have grown their respective memberships during 2010. The Canadian 'SuperStar' Chapters,' those who have achieved a growth of membership of 9% or more, included: * Northern Alberta; * Southern Alberta; and * British Columbia. Canadian 'Star Chapters' that received special recognition during the Awards Luncheon for increasing their membership between 6 and 9% include: * Quebec; and * Canadian Capital. ORIMS was presented with 'Ontario Chapter Achievement Award - Organization Achievement - Social Events'.

Guests mingled on the 1912 Yaletown heritage building's glass-covered courtyard before sitting down to a gourmet dinner.
Proformance Adjusting Solutions inc. hosted a Corporate Launch & Charity Wine tasting event on Apr. 28. The evening, held at the drake Hotel in Toronto, included a silent auction, a 50/50 draw and great raffle prizes, including a weekend getaway. The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose International, Ontario Pond held its 11th Annual Scotch Nosing on Apr. 27 at the One King West Hotel & Residence in Toronto. The evening started with cocktails in The Vault, followed by dinner in the Grand Banking Hall. A record number of ganders and guests attended the event, enjoying an evening of fine dining, camaraderie and rare scotch samplings sponsored by Glenfiddich. The evening raised close to $20,000, to be donated to Women In Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC) and the Starlight Children's Foundation. The event was sponsored by Blouin Dunn LLP, Vista Disability Management Inc., Masterclean Contracting and Cleaning, Modern Salvage Consultants, Giffin Koerth. Thanks to the hard work of Laurel DiMaso, Jamie Dunn and Anna Galanter, along with all those who attended, the evening was a great success.
The Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association held its OIBA Open House on Apr. 21 at the historic Aberdeen Pavillion in Ottawa. With more than 600 attendees, the event kicked off with a 'Free Education Seminar' offering three free RIBO hours. The Open House included a large trade show, including a wide range of exhibitors from all segments of the industry. Organizers announced that, based on the success of the event, it was sure to become an annual addition to the calendar.
The Property Casualty Underwriters Club (PCUC) held its Spring Thaw on Apr. 20 at the Rosewater Room in Toronto. The annual event added some sunshine to everyone's day. Attendees warmed up to great company, cocktails, food and special entertainment.
Trisura Guarantee Insurance Company celebrated their 5th Anniversary on Apr. 14 with a reception held in the lobby of their new premises at the Bay Adelaide Centre. The event was extremely well attended by their longstanding and supportive brokers.
Hannover Re held a retirement celebration for Roy Vincent on Apr. 14 at the Rosewater Room in Toronto. More than 150 clients, colleagues, partners and guests attended. Vincent began his insurance career at the age of 17 as a Lloyds broker in the blood and livestock business. Having worked at Hannover Re for 28 years, Vincent was based in Germany and was the head of the Canadian and Caribbean Department for the past 20 years. Throughout his career, Vincent logged more than 150 trips to Canada.
WICC Ontario held its 15th annual gala dinner, ICONIC, on Apr. 13, 2011 at The Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto. WICC dinner co-chairs and evening emcees Michael Butler and Marian Adamson introduced WICC co-chairs Carolyn Horan and Jean Faulkner to present Martin Kabat, CEO of the Ontario division of the Canadian Cancer Society, with a cheque from WICC for $825,000. Gold Flame Awards, recognizing significant contributions to WICC, went to the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario, Risk Management Counsel of Canada, SIMAC Canada Inc. and Worden Insurance & Financial Services Ltd. Nancy Thorne and Debbie Cyr were 2010 WICC 'Hall of Flame' Award inductees. Lyna Newman, who was the executive director, board member and secretary of WICC Ontario for more than a decade, received the Lew Dunn Memorial Award. Marilyn Horrick, past dinner chair, introduced WICC Relay for Life co-chairs Paul Martin and Carla Smith, who spoke about the industry's commitment to the event and 2011 Relay for Life plans and goals. Since WICC's inception in 1996, the P&C industry has raised more than $5 million.
CCR's Annual Blues Night was held at Fionn MacCool's in downtown Toronto on Apr. 13. Guests were treated to an evening of good food and great music with performances from singer, songwriter and harmonica player Paul Riddick.
The Insurance Institute of Ontario held its 2011 CIP Society Symposium, entitled Change,Advance, Succeed, at the Toronto Board of Trade on Apr. 6. Author and leadership and change expert Alan Deutschman was the breakfast keynote speaker. Intact Financial Corporation president and CEO Charles Brindamour provided an address at lunch on insurance industry trends. The day concluded with an Industry Leaders Panel moderated by Susan Meltzer of Aviva Canada. Panelists included: John Chippindale, HKMB HUB; Shawn DeSantis, RSA Canada; Sharon Ludlow, Swiss Re; Karen Barkley, Specialty Risk Underwriters; and Lynn Oldfield, Chartis.
CSN Collision & Glass hosted their second annual Date Night on Apr. 6 with food, cocktails and a private screening of the hit thriller The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey. The CSN Team and its members invited insurance adjusters to join them for a night out. The festivities began in Jack Astor's at Square One in Mississauga, Ontario, where everyone enjoyed an after-work cocktail and nibbled on great food. The evening continued at the Mississauga Coliseum, where The Lincoln Lawyer was on the big screen for the private audience.
WICC Ottawa Chapter held a Sugar Bush Breakfast at the National Arts Centre on Apr. 1. More than 230 industry supporters came out to enjoy typical light sugar bush food fare, live music and even maple taffy on snow - in the middle of the city. Special guest Dawn Cooper, manager of the Canadian Cancer Society Ottawa unit, gave a presentation on local CCS initiatives and programs. Cooper accepted a $25,000 cheque from WICC, representing funds raised during the 2010 WICC Ottawa Chapter Wine and Cheese event on Oct. 28. An additional $8,500 was raised at the Sugar Bush Breakfast in support of WICC. The Breakfast Committee included Kimberley Jeffries, Novatech; Samantha Iturregui, Kelly Santini LLP; and WICC Ottawa cochair and event chair Sylvie Tremblay, Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. Special recognition went to all other WICC Ottawa members, including Marcella MacDonald, WICC Ottawa co-chair and Wine and Cheese event chair, ENCON Group Inc., and Barb Reddick, WICC Ontario executive director.
More than 160 senior insurance industry executives gathered in Toronto for the 2011 Canadian Outlook Breakfast on Mar. 31. Attendees at the event, cosponsored by Swiss Re and the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), learned about trends in the 2010 Canadian market results. Speakers included Sharon Ludlow, Swiss Re Canada president and CEO; Christian Mumenthaler, member of the Swiss Re executive committee and chief marketing officer for reinsurance; Don Forgeron, IBC president and CEO; and Gregor Robinson, IBC senior vice president and chief economist.
The fourth annual St Baldrick's event was held on Mar. 10 at the Duke of Westminster Pub in Toronto. St Baldrick's started in the United States in 2000 when three reinsurance executives turned their annual St Patrick's Day party into a fundraiser for Childhood Cancer. Participants raise money by shaving their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer. In Canada, St Baldrick's has partnered with Childhood Cancer Canada so that all money raised stays in Canada. Proceeds go towards funding the most promising research projects for Childhood Cancer. Seventeen people volunteered to have their heads shaved this year. Participating companies included Travelers Canada, Marsh Canada, Liberty International Underwriters, Swiss Re, Creechurch and Beach and Associates. The final figure has yet to be finalized, but the efforts raised approximately $32,000 to $33,000.
Hundreds partied with a purpose at an all-industry St. Patrick's Day Charity Social on Mar. 10 at Grace O'Malley's Irish Pub in Toronto. The event's organizers and five sponsors - Forensic Investigations Canada, ClaimsPro, Assessment Rehabilitation Services, Belfor Restoration and Dutton Brock LLP - donated money raised from a prize draw to WICC.
The HKMB HUB Hockey Challenge for Charity dropped the puck on the 6th annual event on Mar. 7, raising funds for the United Way and WICC (Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade). This event has grown steadily since the inaugural game in 2006; this year, the six-team tournament at the Air Canada Center had more than 66 players, 30 major corporate sponsors and 300-plus spectators on hand to enjoy the hockey. The Accidental Benefits provided live music in the cozy atmosphere of the Ice Box Lounge, and musical recording artist Michael Burgess treated everyone to a hair-raising version of the national anthem. Dwight Drummond of CBC News dropped the ceremonial puck opening the tournament. Canadian sports broadcaster Gord Stellick was on hand as the celebrity MC for the evening. The event raised more than $30,000 for both charities.

Held in Victoria's Restaurant at Le Meridien King Edward Hotel in downtown Toronto, guests took a break from their busy days to sip tea, chat and enjoy savories, scones and pastries.
The Sovereign General Insurance Company hosted an elegant evening of fine food, martinis and jazz at the National Club in Toronto on Mar. 2. Guests were entertained by a talented local jazz trio led by Pat Collins. The event celebrated the significant contribution and support Sovereign has received from its revamped broker network as the company successfully transitioned from a commercial account underwriter into an active, mid-market insurer.

CAA Insurance Company's claims department did a little something different for Valentine's Day. "We have a lot of new faces in our department this year, and we wanted to get everyone together for a little social so they would get to know each other away from their desks," the company said in a statement. CAA distributed t-shirts that said, 'I Love Claims' and encouraged staff to dress in red or pink. Later in the afternoon, everyone enjoyed Valentine's Day cake and coffee and some social time.

The CICMA/CIAA Ontario Chapters’ 44th Annual Joint Conference, “Litigation, Mitigation and Strategies In Between,” was held on Feb. 8, 2011 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The CIP Society, a division of The Insurance Institute of Canada, selected Paul Green, BA, FCIP, as the 2011 recipient of the Greater Toronto Area Fellow of Distinction Award. Green’s award was presented at The CIP Society’s Annual Fellows’ Reception at the National Club on Feb.3, 2011. It recognizes outstanding achievement in the insurance industry in Toronto. Colleagues nominate insurance professionals for The Fellow of Distinction Award, which is presented annually to a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP). At the reception , Heather Masterson, FCIP, chair of the CIP Society-Ontario said: “Paul’s dedication and contribution to the insurance industry over the past three decades has been exemplary. His expertise, combined with his enthusiasm for innovation, makes him a force to be reckoned with and a very worthy recipient of this award.” Currently vice president at the CG&B Group Inc., Green has more than 30 years of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry. He has strong marketing and underwriting knowledge in both personal and commercial lines. His extracurricular involvement with the industry has seen him in a variety of roles, including past president of the Insurance Institute of Ontario and regional vice-chair of the Insurance Institute of Canada (2004-05). He served on the IIO Governing Council from 1999 to 2006, and was a past member of the CIP Council of the Insurance Institute of Canada. Green has a long history of community and charitable involvement, including volunteer positions with United Way and the steering committee of WICC Relay for Life. The evening also recognized the recent graduates of the CIP Society-Ontario Council’s Fellows program.

This represented the single-largest contribution ever made to the CCIF Skills Program. It came from an association fund for supporting deserving causes, established by the recyclers’ “Retire Your Ride” program, to which OARA members contributed $35 per “retired” vehicle.

Carlos Rodrigues, president of the Insurance Institute of Ontario, served as the master of ceremonies. François Faucher, chairman of The Insurance Institute of Canada, addressed more than 400 Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) graduates. Kevin Newman, Canadian television news anchor, was the keynote speaker.
McCague Borlak LLP ushered in the New Year by hosting industry guests at its annual ‘Christmas in January,’ a traditional reception of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The event gave guests a chance to tour McCague Borlak’s newly renovated office space on the 26th floor of 130 King Street West in Toronto.
The Ontario Chapter of the Risk & Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) held its Christmas Luncheon on Dec. 16, 2010, at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto. More than 650 attended. In keeping with the spirit of giving, the ORIMS executive chose to raise funds for The Daily Bread Food Bank. ORIMS president April Savchuk presented a cheque for $7,500 and hundreds of pounds of food to the food bank in support of its fight to eliminate
hunger in and around Toronto.

Lloyd’s hosted an event at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on Nov. 30, 2010, marking the release of its 360 Risk Insight Report: Reducing the risk of earthquake damage in Canada - Lessons from Haiti & Chile. Lloyd’s CEO Dr. Richard Ward introduced the report, saying: “360 Risk Insight” brings together the views of the world’s leading business, academic and insurance experts to help stimulate thought and discussion about emerging risks. We are delighted to have worked with the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR), based in Toronto, in producing this report.” Following the launch, attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception to celebrate the opening of Lloyd’s new office in Toronto.

CARSTAR Automotive Canada announced its intention to build a 16,000-square-foot head office in Hamilton, Ontario during a special groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 22. The facility will be called CARSTAR Vision Park, “reflecting the company's vision to be the leader in the Canadian collision repair industry.” The new facility will be located at 1460 Stone Church Rd. E, overlooking the Mount Albion Conservation Area. It will also be home to CARSTAR University, the company’s learning and research centre. This facility will include a training centre with production bays and the latest repair equipment, allowing the corporate field team to test new processes. It will also be a central point for franchise partners to bring in their management and repair technicians to receive up-to-date, hands-on training in addition to classroom learning. “It is with great pride that I announce today the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in CARSTAR’s history,” said president and CEO Sam Mercanti. “Although our success is a result of the hard work of more than 140 franchise partners from coast-to-coast, it all started in Hamilton and we are thrilled to make this major investment today in our hometown.”

The 55th Annual Black Tie Dinner of the Toronto Insurance Conference (TIC) was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto on Nov. 11. Award-winning golf writer Lorne Rubenstein, a columnist for the Globe and Mail, provided a keynote address. Rubenstein has written eight books, his most recent being This Round’s on Me: Lorne Rubenstein on Golf.
Accident benefits claim adjusters and managers attended the first part of an educational series hosted by vpi on Nov. 5. The theme of the day was: “The New SABS - Keeping the Adjuster in the Driver’s Seat.” Four speakers outlined strategic steps adjusters can take to reduce time and cost in claims management. Speakers included: Philippa Samworth, partner, Dutton Brock; Dean Tripp, associate professor, Queen’s University; Viivi Riis, senior health advisor, IBC; and Sean Slater, general manager of vpi.
Paul Davis Systems Burlington, Ontario location held a Holiday Open House on Nov. 4. WICC Ontario Chapter held its annual Breakfast for Cancer on Nov. 3 at the Arcadian Court in Toronto. The sold-out event had more than 450 insurance industry supporters in attendance. They heard the personal and courageous story of ovarian cancer survivor and speaker Cynthia Bradburn. Despite her obstetrician/gynecologist’s belief that her rash of symptoms was caused by an ovarian cyst, Bradburn had a gut feeling it was something more serious. When she attended an Ovarian Cancer Canada Listen to the Whispers awareness presentation at her workplace, “I cried and came out of there convinced I had ovarian cancer,” she said. “Ovarian cancer may have changed my life, but I am determined to not let it ruin my life. I’ve learned that life has no guarantees, so I’m living each of my days to the fullest and I’m living without regrets. Anything that’s within my control, I’m going to take it and run with it.”
Salute BC presented Brent Atkinson of Atkinson & Terry Insurance Brokers with the Insurance Person of the Year Award on Oct. 28, 2010 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver. Barb MacPhail of Hub International Insurance Brokers, TOS Division, received the Rising Star Award. In addition, three post-secondary students received scholarships. Four-hundred and fifty insurance industry professionals attended the event.

The Insurance Community 3rd Annual Wish Upon a Star Charity Golf Tournament was held in support of the Starlight Children’s Foundation on Oct. 6 at Deer Creek Golf and Country Club. Generous golfers at the sold-out event teed up to help make a difference in the life of children. Tournament organizers presented more than $46,500 to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. For more than 20 years, the foundation has committed itself to improving the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and life-altering injuries. The foundation provides entertainment, education and family activities to help cope with any pain, fear and isolation associated with prolonged illness.
Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. employees participated in their 2nd annual Global Day of Service on Oct. 2. Crawford employees from around the world volunteer for a charitable cause of their choice on Crawford’s Global Day of Service. This year, more than 1,200 Crawford employees, family members and friends around the world participated in more than 54 service projects in 19 countries. Here in Canada, events were held in Vancouver, Calgary, Windsor, Toronto, Kitchener and Ottawa. The various projects included volunteering in homeless and women’s shelters, planting trees, donating food and clothing to charitable organizations and volunteering with the Children’s Aid Society.

Chartis hosted its annual RIMS Canada cocktail reception on Sept. 27 in the Empire Ball Room at the Fairmont Hotel McDonald. Given the ‘balmy’ Edmonton weather the week of the conference, guests were able to enjoy the panoramic views of the North Saskatchewan River valley from the hotel’s spacious terrace.
During the RIMS Canada Conference’s opening ceremonies, the Ontario Chapter of RIMS named Tina Gardiner, manager of insurance and risk at the Regional Municipality of York, as the 2010 recipient of the Donald M. Stuart Award. Gardiner’s involvement with RIMS spans nearly 20 years. “I can’t believe I am standing up here,” Gardiner said upon receiving the award. “I am humbled and I am honoured to be given this award and to be in the company of those that have been honoured before me.” Conference delegates were also treated to a keynote address by controversial and famed author Salman Rushdie. He spoke of the importance of realizing there is no such thing as 100% security, only degrees of security. Acceptance of this fact allows individuals to go on to achieve great things. "If you want to open the universe a little bit more, you cannot do that sitting safely in the middle of a room,” he said. “You have to go out to the borders and push out."

The CIP Society GTA - Annual Fellows’ Golf Tournament was held on Sept. 20 at Wyndance Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario. One hundred and forty-four golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on the course, raising $2,100 for The John E. Lowes Insurance Education Fund.
Delegates of the 2010 National Insurance Conference of Canada (NICC), held in Montreal, Quebec, enjoyed the opportunity to share refreshment and conversation during the opening night of the conference and before enjoying the gala dinner. More than $14,000 was raised in lieu of speaker gift donations, in addition to a silent auction and raffle for WICC Quebec Chapter , the 2010 NICC charity of choice.
The fourth annual National Insurance Conference of Canada (NICC) featured speakers such as General Rick Hillier, former Canadian chief of defence staff; conference emcee Amanda Lang, senior business reporter for CBC News and cohost of The Lang and O’Leary Exchange; Dan Ariely, behavioural economist and author; and OSFI senior director Gilbert Menard and OSFI director Bruce Thompson, to name a few. Speakers offered insights on current trends and the state of Canada’s property and casualty industry.
Rochon Engineering welcomed clients to their facility in Bolton, Ontario in September and October for hands-on seminars on origin-and-cause fire investigations as well as motor vehicle accident reconstruction. Attendees observed demonstrations in Rochon’s laboratory and 9,000-square foot warehouse.
The Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) held its 2010 Annual General Meeting at the Fairmont Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Although high winds on the high seas postponed a scheduled whale watching tour on Sept. 17, there was still plenty of action at the conference, including the President’s Dinner and Entertainment on Sept. 18. IBAC welcomed its new president, Fraser Lyle, and recognized the dedicated work of several of its executive members.
Fire Underwriters Survey (FUS) subscribers met at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto on Sept. 15 to discuss significant developments taking place in the areas of response time studies, Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation and fire hall grading details, in addition to enhanced data and delivery mechanisms. Sixty members of the insurance industry attended the presentation, which highlighted the importance of the fire insurance grading system provided by FUS, as well as how this critical information assists underwriters in their daily decision making process. Speakers also introduced the integration of geo-spatial FUS data — such as the distance of a risk to the nearest responding fire hall and hydrant protection — into RMS iClarify services.
Ted Bellinger, vice president of business development at ENCON Group Inc., cycled from Vancouver to Halifax between Sept. 9 and 23 to raise funds for the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride (SNKCR). Bellinger personally raised more than $44,000 “to help children live with and beyond cancer” (fundraising continues at www.snkcr.com/tedbellinger). The 2010 ride team of 39 cyclists (of which Bellinger is one) together raised more than $1.4 million — and that total is still rising. The SNKCR has one, single-minded goal: to raise sustainable funding for children’s cancer research and pediatric oncology support programs in each and every one of the 17 hospitals across Canada that are licensed to perform services vital for keeping children suffering from cancer alive with a better quality of life.
The Toronto Insurance Women’s Association (TIWA) held its annual charity golf tournament on Sept. 8 at Cardinal Golf Club in Newmarket, Ontario. Hundreds of industry golf enthusiasts helped raise more than $10,000 for the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club and Camp Oochigeas.

The 20-20 Vision CARSTAR Industry Conference 2010 kicked off at Deerhurst Resort in Hunstville, Ontario with a beach party on Aug. 18 that featured a boat ‘safety’ demonstration, followed by a number of not so- safe water-skiing tricks performed by very capable professionals. Simmlands held its 4th Annual Pro-Am for the CPGA Women’s Championship on Aug. 16. Twenty-five teams, each consisting of three amateurs and a top woman professional, participated at Burlington Golf & Country Club in a scramble format. This year’s event boasted four women from The Golf Channel’s Big Break series. Proceeds went to Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC). John Simmonds, chairman of Simmlands Insurance Services, confirmed the event next year would be held at Bayview Golf & Country Club.

A zealous group of 221 golfers attended the 11th annual WICC Ontario Golf Tournament on July 12 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario. Attendees enjoyed a day complete with a barbeque lunch, silent auction, raffle and excitement well beyond the ordinary, everyday tournament — with a hole-in one scored by Elizabeth Kepes of Desjardins General Insurance. The winning play of the day was made during WICC’s cheque presentation to the Canadian Cancer Society: that’s when golf committee chair and WICC director Lyna Newman presented the CCS with a cheque in the amount of $200,000.
The Toronto Insurance Women’s Association (TIWA) celebrated summer in style with their 7th Annual Summer Social (formerly Pub Night) on July 8. Insurance industry guests enjoyed a summer evening at Fionn McCool’s in downtown Toronto.
More than 165 insurance professionals participated in the 12th Annual McCague Borlack LLP Golf Tournament on June 30. The tournament took place at the prestigious Club at Bond Head, in Bond Head, Ontario. Attendees supported the DareArts Foundation Inc. for Children, a Canadian not-for profit organization that uses arts education to empower children to become leaders.
The CICMA of Ontario Annual Golf Tournament was held on June 25 at Cardinal Golf Course in Newmarket, Ontario. The CICMA and tournament participants raised $26,000 for Camp Oochigeas—Kids Cancer Camp. Also, the CICMA presented claims industry veteran Mike Yang with a new custom wheelchair.
This year’s Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life featured the largest-ever number of insurance industry participants. The relay celebrates survival and is a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. In June, teams of 10 people participated in a 12-hour, overnight, non-competitive relay, taking turns walking, running or strolling around a track. More than 500 friends and members of the insurance industry formed teams under the Team WICC banner in well over 20 different locations across the country. WICC’s headquarters for the event were located at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York, Ontario. Approximately 300 participants at this location raised more than Cdn$200,000 in pledges and corporate sponsorships on June 25. WICC Ontario presented a cheque for Cdn$200,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society at the North York Relay.

The Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) held its annual golf tournament on June 22 at Deer Creek Golf Club in Ajax, Ontario. Three hundred and nineteen golfers attended the event, which took place immediately following the ORIMS annual general meeting. A torrential rain may have soaked the golfers, but it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, as many colleagues used the time to network and reconnect.
The Insurance Brokers Association of B.C. (IBABC) offered a ‘Hall of Fame’ sports theme at its 62nd Annual Conference & Trade Show in Victoria, B.C. on June 16-18. About 70 exhibitors attended the event, which featured a ribald keynote address by Hockey Hall of Fame great Dennis Hull, a star player for the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1970s. The association held its annual general meeting on Thursday, after which time delegates and guests kicked back at the President’s Gala dinner and dance with Chic Gamine and Jake & Elwood’s Blues Brothers Revue. Also, IBABC held a cocktail celebration in honour of its new Broker Essential Skills Program.

Niagara-On-The-Lake Event. Held at the Queen’s Landing on
June 16 and 17, guests took in presentations by members of the reinsurers’
North American and Canadian executive team. Afterwards, they went on a tour of the
Cave Springs vineyard in the nearby town of Jordan, Ontario. Attendees finished
the first day with a gourmet wine pairing dinner and a beautiful sunset at the Windows
on Twenty.

CARSTAR Collision Centres raised more than $150,000 across North
America for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation
in the United States and local fundraising groups. More than $117,000 was raised
in Canada alone during the annual CARSTAR Soaps it Up for Cystic Fibrosis
initiative, in which volunteers helped wash more than 5,500 cars. This
year's event, A Splash of Magic, was held on Jun. 12 at more than 80 locations across
Canada. In keeping with the theme of magic, CARSTAR enlisted illusionist Brian Michaels
as spokesperson for the National Charity event. Michaels has cystic fibrosis and
is encouraged by all the community support behind making this fundraiser a reality
in so many locations across the country each year. “Over the past seven years,
the CARSTAR Soaps it Up for Cystic Fibrosis campaign has grown and become an important
fundraising event for our customers, employees and partners,” said Sam Mercanti,
president and CEO of CARSTAR Automotive Canada Inc. “We’re very honoured
to have our franchise partners and staff who take the lead in their markets and
are committed to finding a cure for this disease.”

on June 10 to bid farewell to former CEO of Swiss Re in Canada Jean-Jacques Henchoz,
who returned to Switzerland, and welcome Sharon Ludlow as the new CEO of Swiss Re
in Canada. Attendees enjoyed stunning views of Toronto from the balconies at Panorama
(located on the 51st floor of the Manulife Centre at Bay & Bloor). Pierre Ozendo,
chairman and CEO of Swiss Reinsurance America Corporation, offered very kind words
about Henchoz and Ludlow, as did George Cook, president and CEO of The Dominion
of Canada General Insurance Company.

The annual convention was an opportunity for CAIW members and guests to network and enhance expertise and knowledge of current industry issues and trends. About 150 people attended from across Canada. Key convention features included business meetings, networking sessions, CAIW board elections and an Education Day.
CULE Insurance held its annual ‘Fly-In’ Golf Trip on June 4-6. The courses in Muskoka,
Ontario included ‘The Rock’ and the ultra-exclusive ‘Oviinbyrd.’ CULE hosts the annual event in appreciation
of their markets’ support. This year’s participants included Ken Rayner, CULE; Ron Fritz, Leeds; Bill Jonas, Everest
Re; Andy Tarantino, Everest Re; Bob Ryan, Lombard; Jim Willis, AON Benfield; Matt Cook, Omega General; Tim Woods, Aviva. Bill Jonas
and Ken Rayner won the coveted “CULE CUP” for the two-man, best- ball tournament.
Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) and the Young
Brokers Council (YBC) hosted its 6th Annual YBC Conference
in downtown Toronto on June 3. Delegates enjoyed educational sessions during
the day, with presentations given by IBAO executive staff, insurer CEOs and industry
experts. A mini trade show and exhibit hall allowed attendees to check out the latest
product offerings from carriers and vendors. A live performance by Canadian R&B
songstress Ivana Santilli spiced up Hospitality Night as delegates cut loose.
XL Capital celebrated its fifth annual Global Day of Giving
on May 27, an employee volunteer day dedicated to supporting the communities
in which XL companies operate. More than 2,000 XL colleagues in 25 countries helped
out more than 170 community projects. In Montreal, XL employees lent a hand to Moisson
Montreal, Canada’s largest food bank. XL’s Toronto office split into
two teams and focused their efforts on sprucing up the Cabbagetown Youth Centre
and the Toronto Friendship Centre. At the Toronto Friendship Centre, about 30 XL
colleagues painted the community centre, a drop-in location for people living through
“the affordable housing crisis,” At a time when job shortages and changes
in the social service system have increased the number of people living in hostels
and on the streets, the Toronto Friendship Centre provides a safe, warm and friendly
place for those who are homeless or marginally homeless. XL’s team was able
to give nearly the entire interior of the centre a fresh coat of paint and planted
a small flower garden outside. Another 24 XL employees in Toronto spent their Global
Day of Giving at the Cabbagetown Youth Centre. Founded as the Cabbagetown
Boxing Club in 1972, the CYC began providing social programs for youth in Toronto’s
eastern, inner-city core. There, XL staff repaired and painted walls and baseboards.
They also installed new ceiling tiles to make the centre’s classrooms —
used for English-as-a-second-language classes — look like new.
The Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) celebrated
five decades with a 50th Jubilee Gala on May 27. Guests arriving
at the Liberty Grand on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in
Toronto were transported back in time by the sounds of the Swing Shift Big Band
and an ORIMS exhibition and midway — complete with candy apples and cotton
candy. A video presentation during dinner included past presidents of the association
offering their memories and thoughts of the risk management profession over the
past five decades.
Canpro Global jazzed up the Vancouver Art Gallery with its
Jazz Night on May 20. The Scott Robertson Trio provided the tunes,
while attendees enjoyed a full bar, hors d’oeuvres, a special viewing
of the gallery’s latest exhibition, Fiona Tan: Rise and Fall. The Canpro Foundation
took the opportunity to raise funds for the UNICEF Haiti Relief Fund.
ACE Canada held a cocktail reception on May 20 to mark the opening of its new corporate
headquarters and to celebrate its 25th anniversary. ACE’s new head office
is located within the Telus Tower at 25 York Street in Toronto. The Telus
Tower is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold building. The
site was a natural choice due largely to ACE's focus on climate change. To demonstrate
its commitment to mitigate the effects of climate change, ACE Canada commemorated
the event by planting a tree in honour of each guest.
The inaugural Canadian Insurance Financial Forum (CIFF) met at
Exhibition Place in Toronto on May 19 to discuss the important financial issues
of the day. The forum featured seminars on a wide variety of financial topics, including
new models for capital management; actuarial predictive modeling such as credit
scoring; key tax issues (such as the impact of the HST and proposed changes to the
GST); IFRS; and ways to manage financial and operational risks. The day concluded
with a CFO panel that considered issues such as mergers and acquisitions potential
and rate adequacy and other topics.
Brokers from the Greater Toronto Area gathered at the Roosevelt Room in Toronto
on May 19 to help Catlin celebrate five years in Canada and the company’s
25th anniversary. The event was a great success, with more than 150
people in attendance.
For the launch of its new office in Toronto, on May 13, specialist
business insurer QBE hosted more than 350 guests at The Grand Banking
Hall at One King West in Toronto for an evening of drinks, canapés and entertainment.
The guests, a mix of managing general agents, brokers, lawyers and adjusters, enjoyed
exclusive performances from aerial ballet group Les Oiseaux du Paradis
and the opportunity to create personalized flipbooks from short video clips of themselves
with Flip Book studio from Party Impressions. QBE general manager David Edgar delivered
a speech, as did David Constable and Ash Bathia from QBE’s European headquarters
in London. QBE opened its Toronto office to provide face-to-face service for the
business it writes through Lloyd’s of London for the Canadian commercial insurance
market.
What is the ‘New Normal?’ Speakers at the CIP Society Symposium
2010 answered this question from a variety of perspectives at the Toronto
Board of Trade on May 13. The annual insurance industry symposium featured seminars
designed to tackle the theme: ‘Conquering an Uncertain Future.’ Seminar
topics included making the most of your legal services, risk managing unforeseen
events and leading multiple generations in the insurance industry of the future.
The 2010 Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association (OIAA) Out of Town Conference
was held May 13 and 14 in Hamilton, Ontario. The two-day ‘Hollywood
Hits’ event included a trade show, seminars, a Hollywood Premiere Party, red
carpet cocktails, a formal dinner and other exciting events.
Viva l’Italia! The Insurance Brokers of Toronto Region held
its annual Friendship Night on May 6 with the theme of Italy. The
Spirale Banquet Hall in Toronto was festooned in red, white and green streamers.
Amici mixed, mingled, perused exhibits and sampled traditional Italian fare from
bruschetta to cannelloni.
More wishes will be coming true this year thanks to the 16th Annual Starlight
Insurance Gala, held in support of Starlight Starbright Children’s
Foundation. Themed ‘Springtime in Paris,’ the black tie event raised
$175,000 on May 1, exceeding last year's amount. Just short of 450 tables represented
all segments of the industry. Joann Brjnas addressed the audience with touching
memories of her daughter Samantha Flannigan’s courageous fight against osteosarcoma,
a common type of bone cancer, as Flanigan maintained her determination to express
joy and love. Brjnas conveyed her gratitude towards a Starlight Wish for its role
in the care Samantha had received, and confirmed Samantha’s anticipation of
the Wish.
Origin and Cause Inc. (OCI)’s charity committee ‘OCI for others’ held its 2nd fundraising event “Swing into Spring” charity dinner dance on April 24 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, Ontario. OCI donated $11,500 to Hamilton Health Sciences Burn & Trauma Unit, bringing the total amount of ‘OCI for others’ donations to the facility to $18,500. Other ‘OCI for others’ events include customer appreciation barbeques, with canned goods collected and donated to local food banks.
CCR’s Annual Blues Night once again heated up Fionn MacCool’s
in downtown Toronto. Guests sang the blues - all in good spirit - alongside
Shrimp Daddy & the Sharpshooters at the Apr. 14 event.
The Risk Management Counsel (RMC) of Canada held a fundraiser for
Women In Cancer Crusade (WICC) at Great Cooks on Eight in Toronto
on Apr. 28. Guest speaker Sarah Richardson, host of Sarah’s House on HGTV,
shared inside tips on home decorating. Guests enjoyed delicious treats and bid on
a huge array of items in a silent auction. The silent auction raised $2,172 for
WICC. RMC supplemented the auction proceeds with a donation of $5,000, raising the
grand total to $7,172 for WICC.
A mountie (albeit, with a Boston accent) guided Canadian delegates of the RIMS
2010 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Boston to the RIMS Canada
Night Celebration at the Sheraton Boston. Sponsored by SCM Insurance
Services and the Canadian Litigation Counsel, attendees were greeted with a patriotic
red cocktail and treated to a ‘Boston: Then and Now’ coffee table book
as a souvenir. Joseph Restoule, president of the William H. McGannon Foundation,
accepted $20,000 in donations ($10,000 from the RIMS Canada Council and Newfoundland
and Labrador Chapter and $10,000 from SCM Insurance Services). Restoule also offered
an update on the McGannon Foundation’s achievements. It granted four scholarships
in 2009 totaling $12,500. The foundation also launched its first Student Involvement
Program at the RIMS Canada conference in St. John’s. The program allowed two
risk management students to attend the conference under the mentorship of members
of the RIMS Community.
More than 3,900 exhibitors filled the Exhibit Hall at the RIMS
2010 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Boston. Companies pulled
out all the stops; features ranged from a free chair massage at LeasePlan USA to
a friendly ‘race around a track’ at the ClearRIsk/Riskonnect booth.
The show floor bustled with more than 4,700 delegates — a 20% increase over
the 2009 conference. Many booths had dedicated meeting lounges, where delegates
had the opportunity to sit and have some face time with company reps.
The RIMS 2010 Opening General Session on April 26 in Boston marked
the 60th anniversary of the association. RIMS executive director Mary Roth reflected
on the achievements of the risk management community over the past several decades.
RIMS president Terry Fleming suggested delegates reflect on the advancements made
in the profession,and also focus on future opportunities. During the session, the
prestigious Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award was presented to Stephen M. Wilder,
vice president of risk management at The Walt Disney Co. Gary Loveman, chairman,
president and CEO of Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., gave a keynote address,
‘Playing the Right Card,’ in which he outlined challenges in running
the U.S.’s largest gaming company. During the Awards Luncheon, also on April
26, Lance Kayfish, risk manager at the City of Kelowna, British Columbia, received
the Richard W. Bland Memorial Award. The award recognizes the dedication and commitment
of a RIMS member in the area of legislation or regulation. Also at the awards ceremony,
the Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador chapters achieved ‘Super Star’
status. RIMS recognized the chapters for increasing their respective memberships
by 9% last year.
The theme was ’32 Degrees Fahrenheit’ at the opening reception of the
Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) 2010 Annual Conference & Exhibition
in Boston in April. But the atmosphere was anything but chilly. Hundreds of RIMS
delegates sampled local Boston fare, enjoyed live music, caught-up with old colleagues
and made new friends as the excitement built for the conference kick-off.
SCOR held a “Soirée spéciale”
at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on Apr. 20, 2010, in celebration of
SCOR’s 40th birthday in 2010. Many clients, insurance brokers
and guests from across Canada and United States attended. As a result of the volcanic
activity in Iceland, chairman Denis Kessler and various members of the SCOR Group’s
executive committee were unable to attend. Henry Klecan, Jr., managing director
of SCOR’s operation in the Americas, hosted the evening event. SCOR is the
fifth-largest global reinsurer in the world, including its global P&C segment
(following the consolidation of SCOR Re/Converium), Global life segment (following
the consolidation of SCOR Life Re and Revios) and Global Investments. The evening’s
reception in Baillie Court, featuring an artistic flare and modern design, was a
perfect setting for an enjoyable night. Guests enjoyed a relaxed and vibrant evening.
Renowned Canadian jazz/stride/blues artist Michael Kaeshammer, the “CSJA 2010
nominee for male vocalist of the year,” provided the entertainment.
The Property Casualty Underwriters Club (PCUC) held its Spring
Thaw on Apr. 30 at the Rosewater Room in Toronto. The annual event
added some sunshine to everyone’s day. Attendees warmed up to great company,
cocktails, food and special entertainment.
Given today's hectic schedule, some people find it difficult to carve out a little
one-on-one time with their significant others and loved ones. And so CSN Collision
& Glass hosted ‘Date Night with CSN’
on Apr. 21, bringing together more than 100 of its members, insurance adjusters
and their spouses on a date. After sharing refreshments at Jack Astor’s, located
at Square One in Mississauga, Ontario, CSN’s guests watched a private screening
of the new hit comedy “Date Night” starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey.
The evening featured great food, great company and great fun. Happier and more relaxed
couples can now be found everywhere!
WICC Ontario held its 14th annual gala dinner, Dream in Colour,
on Apr. 14, 2010 at The Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto. WICC dinner co-chair
and evening emcee Michael Butler introduced WICC co-chair Carolyn Horan, who presented
Rick Perciante, acting CEO of the Ontario division of the Canadian Cancer Society,
with a cheque from WICC for Cdn $300,000. Gold Flame Awards went to Pat McNally,
Michael Daniels and Stephen MacConnell (IBANB/IBANS Convention Motorcycle Ride);
MSA Research Inc. and North Waterloo Farmers Mutual. McKellar Structured Settlements
received the Lew Dunn Memorial Award. Marilyn Horrick, past dinner chair, introduced
WICC Relay for Life co-chairs Paul Martin and Robert Landry, who spoke about their
renewed commitment to the event and the committee’s new $444,000 goal for
the 2010 Relay for Life. A special presentation was made to Lyna Newman, who has
been the executive director, board member and secretary of WICC Ontario for more
than a decade. She is transitioning to the chair of the WICC golf tournament. Barb
Reddick is the new board member, executive director and secretary of WICC Ontario.
Attendees witnessed Etobicoke School of the Arts performances of SPLASH and DanceESAtion,
and a live painting performance by artist Fritz Branschant. Since the inception
of WICC in 1996, more than $4.25 million has been raised by the property and casualty
insurance industry.
The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose International, Ontario Pond
held its 10th Annual Scotch Nosing at the Rosewater Room in Toronto
on Apr. 8. More than 150 guests attended the sold-out event. They were treated to
a four course meal and some of Scotland’s rarest, ‘special edition’
single malts. Ed Patrick, one of Scotland’s finest international Scotch whiskey
experts, was on hand to share his expertise. Jack Jackson, Piper and distinguished
member of The Robert Burns Federation, made a special guest appearance. Proceeds
of the event were donated to Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC).
More than 150 industry representatives, a record turnout, attended the 51st
Annual Reception of the Quarter Century Club held Mar. 31 at the Hilton
International in Toronto. The event was a roast for claims industry veteran
Malcolm “Mac” Ross, senior vice president with ClaimsPro
(an SCM Insurance Services company). After 42 years of working in the insurance
industry in Ottawa, Mac who “didn’t think I’d ever want to be
roasted,” commented in his closing remarks of the roast: “It’s
a wonderful day. A day I won’t forget.”
More than 400 attended an all-industry St. Patrick's Day Charity Social,
held Mar. 11 at Grace O’Malley’s Irish Pub in Toronto. Mustang
Investigations, Belfor Restoration, Assessment Rehabilitation Services, ProFormance
Adjusting and Dutton Brock LLP sponsored the event. Money raised from a prize draw
was donated to WICC.
St. Patrick’s Day came early for Canada’s 10,000 cancer-fighting kids
when St Baldrick’s partnered with the Childhood Cancer
Foundation on Mar. 10 to hold their third annual head-shaving event
at PJ O’Brien’s in Toronto. Including participants from both Toronto
and New York, 26 people “shaved their way to a cure,” helping raise
critical funds for childhood cancer research in Canada. The day was a huge success,
proving to be loads of fun for all who attended. The initial goal was to raise $25,000;
the finally tally of $60,000 more than doubled that. Organizers extended a special
thank you to companies represented at this year’s event: Beach and Associates,
NetApp, Travelers’ Insurance and Dundee Wealth.
Blouin Dunn LLP held its monthly pub night at
the Elephant & Castle in Toronto on Mar 4. Clients, colleagues and friends took
the opportunity to enjoy some camaraderie and billiards.
More than 100 collision repair and insurance professionals gathered on Feb. 24 for
an Assured Automotive Group Grand Opening celebration. The event
was the official launch of the new Assured Leaside facility.
Located at 90 Wicksteed Ave in Toronto, the 5,000-squarefoot repair facility showed
off some leading-edge technology and genuine hospitality.
A great time was had by all at the third annual McCague Borlack LLP Ski Day
at Alpine Ski Resort in Collingwood, Ontario on Feb. 18. Attendees supported the
Canadian Cancer Society’s inaugural ‘Titz ‘n Glitz’ campaign,
a breast cancer fundraiser. The event was held simultaneously at the ski club. Participants
showed their support through the purchase of merchandise and raffle tickets.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2010, the Toronto Insurance Women’s
Association (TIWA) Wine and Cheese event was held on Feb. 4 at a new
venue this year — the Atlantis Pavilions, Ontario Place. More than 1,200 guests
attended the event themed "One City. Many Nations." The event featured networking
opportunities and numerous prize draws.
More than 150 exhibitors from across Canada showcased the latest and greatest in
the industry at the Ontario Insurance Adjusters' Association (OIAA)'s Professional
Development & Claims Conference in Toronto on Feb. 3, 2010. The
event featured a trade show and seminars covering a wide variety of timely claims
topics. Celebrity chef David Adjey, best known for his presence on the Food Network
television show Restaurant Makeover, was the luncheon keynote speaker. During the
lunch, the OIAA presented a cheque for $6,110 to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters
of Canada.
More than 300 guests — the biggest turnout to date — attended the
4th Annual Post CICMA/CIAA Joint Conference Cocktail, themed ‘Angels
and Devils.’ The event, hosted by Giffin Koerth Forensics
and Blouin Dunn LLP, was held at the Loose Moose Tap & Grill
in Toronto on Feb. 2, 2010. The event provided an opportunity for claims industry
stakeholders to connect with colleagues and friends.
The 111th Annual Convocation & Awards Night of the Insurance
Institute of Ontario was held Jan. 28 at the Metro Toronto Convention
Centre. André Fredette, president of the Insurance Institute of Ontario,
served as the master of ceremonies. Chris Fawcus, chairman of The Insurance Institute
of Canada, addressed more than 400 Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow
Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) graduates. Cassie Campbell, former captain
of the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team, was the keynote speaker.
More than 300 professionals representing the insurance claims and collision repair
industries attended the Canadian Collision Industry Forum (CCIF) meeting
on Jan. 23, 2010 in Toronto. Speakers included Tony Canadé
(Assured Automotive), CCIF chairman; Mike Bryan, CCIF administrator; Marc Brazeau,
Automotive Industries Association (AIA); John Edelen, I-CAR; Dale Finch, National
Automotive Trades Association (NATA); Mark Nantais, Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers

WICC Alberta held its Gold Flame Awards Lunch
on Jan. 21 at the BMO Center at Stampede Park. More than 320 people helped celebrate
the 10th anniversary and $1 million in donations. Guest speaker Mary Commo talked
about being a five-year cancer survivor. Dr. Keith Jirik of the University of Calgary
updated everyone on how he used his WICC sponsorship funds to purchase a microscope
valuable to his research project. Local TV personality Sandra Jansen emceed the
event, and Dr. Robert Buckman had them rolling in the aisles with laughter.
McCague Borlack LLP hosted its annual ‘Christmas in January’
at the Design Exchange on Jan. 20. More than 300 guests enjoyed the opportunity
to share drinks, discussion and celebrate the occasion.
The CIP Society - Ontario Division presented Carla Blackmore
with its GTA Fellow of Distinction Award on Jan. 14, at the National
Club in Toronto. Blackmore, the recently retired director of commercial programs
with Zurich Canada, was recognized for her contributions to both the insurance industry
and the charities it supports. Her career with Zurich spanned more than 30 years.
Outside of the office, she was heavily involved with the Insurance Institute. She
has served as a director for WICC Ontario since 2001 and has been a co-chair of
the Starlight Insurance Gala since 2007. The evening also recognized the recent
graduates of the CIP Society-Ontario Council’s fellows program.
The Ontario Chapter of the Risk & Insurance Management Society (ORIMS)
held its Christmas Luncheon on December 16 at the Royal York Hotel
in Toronto. More than 650 attended. In keeping with the spirit of giving, the ORIMS
executive chose to raise funds for The Daily Bread Food Bank. ORIMS president Steve
Pottle presented a cheque for $10,000 and more than 1,500 lbs. of food to the food
bank in support of its fight to eliminate hunger in and around Toronto.
The weather outside was frightful, but attendees enjoyed a delightful time at the
Christmas function jointly held by the Northern Alberta Chapter
of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (NARIMS) and the Insurance
Institute of Northern Alberta (IINA). The event was held at the
Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton. Dianne Brown,campaign director of the Christmas
Bureau of Edmonton, gratefully accepted an $1,800 donation raised by NARIMS and
IINA through the inaugural joint Christmas event. Many said they were looking forward
to the RIMS Canada Conference to be held in Edmonton in September 2010.
The Ontario Pond of the Honourable Order of the Blue Goose hosted
its annual Christmas Galabration on Dec. 3, 2009. More than 100
ganders and guests attended. The event was held at Liberty Group’s newly renovated
Ciao Wine Bar in Toronto’s trendy Yorkville area. Cocktails and a fabulous
meal followed a performance by Terri Oliver and her band, Oliver Sole.
SCM Insurance Services hosted 250 friends and colleagues at its
SCM Toronto Holiday Party. Guests were treated to an oyster bar,
cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and holiday cheer at the Market Kitchen in the historical
St. Lawrence Market.
Hughes Amys LLP started spreading the holiday cheer early this
year, hosting its annual holiday party at Six Steps Restaurant Lounge
in Toronto on Nov. 25, 2009. In addition to delicious fare and hospitality, industry
guests and attendees were treated to ‘contagious smiles’ and encouraged
to spread the cheer!
SCM Risk Management Services (RMS) officially unveiled its new
insurance-to-value (ITV) indexing technology at a reception at
the MaRS Innovation Centre in Toronto on Nov. 23, 2009. Dubbed ‘iClarify,’
the RMS indexing tool has been developed to help resolve the ITV issue. SCM Risk
Management Services partnered with the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario
in developing the RMS indexing tool and The Economical is a funding partner. Through
iClarify, Ontario brokers will be able to access streetscape photographs, overview
satellite images, claims history (from CGI) and neighbourhood profile data of Canadian
homes. Using this data, brokers will be able to validate input from consumers
regarding construction type, square footage, year built, interior and exterior finishes,
etc.
More than 200 industry members attended the Toronto Insurance Conference (TIC)’s
54th Annual Black Tie Dinner on Nov. 21, 2009 at the Four Seasons Hotel
in Toronto. TIC President Brian Wilcox introduced the evening’s guest speaker,
Andrew Coyne, national editor of Maclean’s Magazine. Coyne provided the audience
with his outlook on today’s political and economic issues.
CARSTAR Automotive Canada Inc. kicked-off its ‘Sweet 15th
Anniversary Celebration’ with its annual charity CARSTAR Casino Night
Gala on Nov. 20, 2009. Held at Carmen’s in Hamilton, Ont., the
gala raised funds for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF). More than
700 insurance and vendor partners, employees and friends attended. Hamilton Tiger
Cats kicker Nick Setta played host for the evening, which was themed ‘La Dolce
Vita - The Sweet Life.’ Canadian musician Suzie McNeil added a live
performance to the mix. McNeil played several of her hits, including ‘Believe’
which was chosen as the theme for the 2010 Winter Olympics. CARSTAR president and
CEO Sam Mercanti presented a cheque to the CCFF worth more than $100,000, raised
through CARSTAR’s 2009 fundraising efforts. To date, CARSTAR has raised more
than $1.7 million to fund research and treatment in the fight against CF.
SCOR took over the Rosewater Room in Toronto on Nov. 19, 2009 to
celebrate the release of the 2009 Beujolais Nouveau wines. Industry

MD&D’s Annual American Thanksgiving once again attracted
industry guests to an afternoon of football, food and socializing. On Nov. 6, 2009,
Montana’s M Lounge was filled with industry delegates watching football and
catching up with old friends and enjoying tasty treats.
More than 400 attended Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC) Ontario’s
12th Annual Breakfast for Cancer on Nov. 4, 2009 at the Arcadian Court
in Toronto. Guest speaker Lauren Donnelly described her traumatic experience and
battle with cancer. As a healthy and active 15-year-old, she was diagnosed with
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Today Lauren is studying journalism at Ryerson University
and is passionate about helping children and teens through their cancer trauma.
She is working with The Childhood Cancer Foundation to launch a social networking
Web site for teens diagnosed with Cancer called ‘Teen Connector'.
More than 100 guests attended the 30th anniversary celebration of PremièreAction
(formerly ROSCO Group), a division of FirstOnSite,
in Montreal on Oct. 29, 2009. The event celebrated three milestones: the name change
from Rosco Group to PremièreAction; a 30th anniversary; and the completion
of a new office complex and operational centre. Guests were treated to live
entertainment, gourmet food, a martini bar and more. The event was held at the new
offices in Dorval, Quebec.
Oktoberfest was in full swing at The Bier Markt King West as members
of The Ontario Pond of The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose came
out to celebrate on October 28th. Guests enjoyed Paulaner beer and various food
stations as they toasted the nearly 200 year old beer festival, which began as a
celebration of the marriage of Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese in 1810.
Winmar Toronto opened its doors for its grand opening
on Oct. 28, 2009. Guests were treated to live music, food and a tour of the newest

Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. held a reception
on Oct. 28 for more than 150 clients and members of the Quebec insurance industry
at Auberge St. Gabriel in Old Montreal. Members of Crawford's executive management
team welcomed guests and introduced the new members of Crawford's Quebec team.
Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) took the time during
its 89th Annual Convention Oct. 20-23, to recognize the achievements
of some of its outstanding members. Dina Pugliese, host of Breakfast Television,
served as the MC for the Second Annual Awards Gala. Award winners
included: Wallace E. Memorial Award. IBAO chair Rodney Hancock,
who announced he was ending his term as IBAO chair, thus concluding 13 years of
service to the association. A photo slideshow and a heartfelt speech by IBAO president
Peter Blodgett commemorated Hancock's achievements. Affiliate Achievement Award:
Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association (OIBA). OIBA president Gregg Luesby accepted
the award on behalf of the association. Brokerage of the Year:
Sinclair-Cockburn FinancialGroup. Jim Grieve, owner of SCFG, accepted the award

Thousands of delegates and attendees visited with more than 75 exhibitors at the
89th Annual Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) Convention and Exposition,
held Oct. 20-23 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The Guarantee Company
of North America won 'The Best Booth Award.'
More than 60 delegates attended The ARC Group Canada's 4th Annual Seminar
on 'Environmental Risks' on October 15. The day included
a presentation by Rodney Taylor, insurance broker at AON Environmental Services
Group, Douglas Hallett of Hallett Environmental and Technology Group Inc. and John
Cherrie of Cherrie Griffith Professional Insurance Services. A cocktail reception
at the St. Andrews Club and Conference Centre in Toronto followed the presentations
and panel discussion.
Members of the Sinclair-Cockburn Financial Group and their insurance
partners laced up their bowling shoes to 'strike' up funds for the Rouge
Valley Health System Foundation. The SCFG Charity Committee held a 'Bowlarama'
on Oct. 8 that raised Cdn$6,800. The money will go towards purchasing a Vital Signs
monitor for Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering Hospital.
The Commonwealth Insurance Company allowed guests to indulge in
the grand tradition of Ladies High Tea on October 8th. Held at
the King Edward in downtown Toronto, guests took a break from their busy days to
sip tea, chat and enjoy finger sandwiches and pastries.
The 1st Convention (Motorcycle) Ride took place in 2008 in conjunction with the
2008 Atlantic Alliance. In this inaugural ride, nine hardy souls together made the
trek to Cape Breton in the fall, raising $2,500 for WICC (Women in Insurance
Cancer Crusade). The ride spawned interest and riders throughout the
insurance communities in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In early October 2009, tying
into the 2009 Atlantic IBANS/IBANB Conference, 19 Atlantic insurance
community riders, along with six passengers, once again braved the elements and
rode to Halifax, Nova Scotia to take part in the Change the Tide Convention
Ride. The rumble and roar of this motley crew of otherwise upstanding
members of their communities, was heard throughout the downtown core of Halifax.
The gang gathered early in the morning and set off together to ride the scenic south
shore of Nova Scotia to Lunenburg. Riders once again collected pledges on behalf
of WICC. One creative rider, Greg Dunlap of Wilson Insurance in Fredericton, New
Brunswick, challenged his co-workers to raise a target amount of money. If they
did, he promised to wear a dress to work. Well, they did — and he did (pictured).
At the IBANS/IBANB Conference President’s Dinner, the riders were proud to
present Nancy Thorne — the Atlantic WICC representative and owner of Carnaghan
Taylor Fowler Insurance of Saint John, New Brunswick — with pledges worth
$9,434. The convention committee then quickly pledged additional funds. Soon, different
tables at the dinner were openly challenging each other; by the end of the evening,
the total amount pledged to WICC exceeded $22,000! The ride is looking to grow for
the 2010 Atlantic Alliance this year in St. John’s Newfoundland.
The 2nd Annual Wish Upon a Star Golf Tournament, in support of
the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation, was held at Deer
Creek Golf and Country Club on Oct. 7, 2009. Event sponsors included Formula One
Collision, Paul Davis Systems, Diamond Auto Bids & Disposal, Enterprise, Discount
Car and Truck Rental and HUB International Ontario. The day was filled with fun
and laughter, dinner, raffles and a live auction. The highlight of the event occurred
when Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation received a donation in the amount
of Cdn$27,000.
Berkley Canada Inc. held a reception October 6th
at the Design Exchange in Toronto to celebrate the official launch of Berkley Canada.
President Michael McLachlan and other members of the executive team were on hand
to greet the more than 150 guests who attended.
Jazz crooner Carol McCartney entertained a crowd of insurance industry professionals
at La Maquette Restaurant in Toronto on Oct. 1. The 'Evening of Jazz'
was presented by McLarens Canada, Sibley, King Reed and Beard
Winter LLP.
Delegates of the 2009 National Insurance Conference of Canada (NICC),
held in Ottawa, Ontario, enjoyed the opportunity to share drinks and discussion
during the opening night of the conference and before enjoying the gala dinner.
Over $18,500 was raised through 'in lieu of speaker gifts donations'; a silent
auction and raffle for WICC, the NICC charity of choice.
The third annual National Insurance Conference of Canada (NICC)
featured speakers such as former prime minister of Canada Jean Chrétien,
conference master of ceremonies Gregg Hanson and OSFI superintendent Julie Dickson,
to name a few. Speakers offered poignant insights on the current trends and state
of Canada's property and casualty industry.
Guy Carpenter and the Mead family hosted an event for Ken Mead
to celebrate his 75th birthday and his 34-year contribution to
the firm. The birthday party was held at The Sutton Place Hotel on Sept. 29. Almost
200 of Ken's friends and former colleagues from the reinsurance industry attended.
Ken remains active in a consulting role with Guy Carpenter.
More than 100 guests attended Gilbertson Davis Emerson LLP's Annual Fall Reception.
Guests at the Sept. 24 event were treated to great music by a live band and excellent
food at the company's offices in Toronto.
Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC)'s Quebec chapter held
its first annual fundraising gala on Sept. 24, drawing more than
220 insurance industry professionals. Attendees enjoyed a silent auction, dinner
and entertainment. The highlight of the evening came when WICC Quebec proudly presented
a cheque of Cdn$24,048.64 to the Canadian Cancer Society. The donation brought the
chapter's total contribution to Cdn$47,000 for 2009.
WINMAR Toronto/Brampton and No Problem Movers
held its first annual mix-and-mingle boat cruise on Sept. 17. Guests
set sail aboard the Obsession III for a four-hour tour around the Toronto harbour.
Proceeds from the event went to local charities, including a Cdn$700 donation to
the AIDS Committee of Toronto.
FCIPs and guests golfed at the annual CIP Society GTA Annual Fellows' Golf
Tournament at Diamond Back Golf Club in Richmond Hill on Sept. 21.
Mother Nature cooperated by delaying the rain until attendees were enjoying cocktails
and hors d'oeuvres in the dining room. Proceeds from the event were donated
to Kids Can Free the Children and Me to We.
The Ontario chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) named
Janice McGraw, manager of risk management and insurance at McGill University
in Montreal, as the 2009 recipient of the Donald M. Stuart Award.
McGraw has 25 years of experience in the field of risk management. She has continued
to contribute to the advancement of the profession in both the community and her
workplace, Steve Pottle, president of ORIMS said. Since 1987, she has "willingly
shared her passion and enthusiasm" by serving on several committees of RIMS,
the RIMS Canada Council and the Quebec Risk and Insurance Association, Pottle said.
She has been vocal in the creation of what is now known as the RIMS Fellow designation.
"Janice is one of the most enthusiastic, kind, generous individuals in our
industry," Pottle said. "In an industry that relies on the relationships
we build to support and achieve our goals and objectives, it is a testament to the
character of someone like Janice when we see the strength of these business relationships
and how they breed friendship as well."
ARC Group Canada hosted a reception at the
RIMS Canada Conference in St. John's at Blue on Water. Guests were
treated to a live band featuring one of Newfoundland's very own unique instruments,
'the ugly stick.' This traditional Newfoundland musical instrument is fashioned
out of household and tool shed items — typically a mop handle with bottle caps,
tin cans, small bells and other noise makers. The instrument is played with a drum
stick and has a distinctive sound.
Catlin Canada had everyone's tails flipping during its
Under the Sea party at the Martini Bar during the RIMS Canada Conference.
Mermaids and mermen mixed, mingled and danced the night away.
General Rick Hillier was the keynote speaker at the opening
ceremonies of the RIMS Canada Conference. In a speech
that drew a lengthy standing ovation, Hillier shared stories that addressed Canada's
military role in the world, all the while demonstrating his trademark Newfoundland
charm and humour. He recounted motivating soldiers under his command by appealing
to their sense of pride in being Canadian. He emphasized the importance of strong
and courageous leadership in war and life.
Seventy companies and organizations filled the Exhibit Hall at
the RIMS Canada Conference in St. John's. Delegates perused
the marketplace, networked with colleagues and checked out the latest company offerings.
Aon Risk Services welcomed delegates to the RIMS Canada Conference
with its Welcome Brunch. Later that evening, at the official
Opening Reception, sponsored by Allianz Global Risks and Integro Insurance
Brokers, guests mingled and listened to words of welcome from RIMS president Joe
Restoule, conference co-chairs Betty Clarke and Marilyn Leonard and St. John's
mayor Dennis O'Keefe.
Roughly 75 delegates of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Canada
Conference laced up their running shoes for the William H. McGannon
Foundation's annual Fun Run-Walk early on
Sunday, Sept. 13. Sponsored by FM Global and the RIMS Canada Council, the event
raised more than Cdn$2,200 for the foundation, which provides learning and networking
opportunities for students considering a career in risk management. Athena Lewarne
clocked in the quickest time for women (26:13), and Helen Sami earned top honours
for women masters (38:13). Ante Petricevic was the quickest of the men (19:12) and
David Buzzeo for men masters (21:28). Over the past year, despite the financial
crisis, the McGannon Foundation raised Cdn$65,000, mostly through perpetual donors,
said Joe Restoule, McGannon's president and RIMS president. "It's remarkable
that while these donors' balance sheets were under attack during the past year,
they found some funds to give us a bit of encouragement," Restoule said.
The 2009 RIMS Canada Casino Night, hosted by GCAN Insurance
Company, was out of this world. The event was held at St. John's
Geo Centre, where full colour planets of our solar system hung in the centre's
three-storey reception hall. Guests could set the stakes as high as the stars at
the cards table or just enjoy a relaxing evening with colleagues.
Crawford & Company (Canada) hosted approximately 150 RIMS
Canada delegates on Sept. 12 at the Masonic temple in St. John's.
Attendees were charmed by 'Ruby' a local comedienne, and were 'screeched
in' as honourary Newfoundlanders.
Cunningham Lindsey Canada hosted delegates of the RIMS Canada
Conference at the Yellow Belly Pub in St. John's on Sept. 12. Guests enjoyed
the chance to socialize, a great dinner, and were treated to a performance by the
St. Pat's Irish step dance troop, the oldest dance group in Atlantic Canada.
SCM Insurance Services treated guests on Sept. 12 at Bianca's
in St. John's to a true Newfoundland evening of hospitality. RIMS Canada
delegates danced the night away to local tunes (with solos by Donna Shumka on the
spoons), traditional food and, of course, a proper 'screeching in' for those
brave enough to pucker up to a cod.
Quelmec Loss Adjusters hosted an evening of cocktails and dinner
during the Risk and Insurance Management Society Canada conference
in St. John's, Nfld. The Cellar Restaurant opened its doors on Sept. 12 for
a night of good food and good company.
Granite Global Solutions held its first annual RIMS Canada
conference event at Mexicali Rosa's in St. John's on Sept.
12. Hosted by the member companies — McLarens Canada, King-Reed Investigation Services
and Sibley & Associates — the Saturday afternoon event allowed delegates the
opportunity to rev up for the conference with some camaraderie and live music.
The 2009 RIMS Canada Conference started with a bang with the official
launch party of ClearRisk. On Sept. 11, ClearRisk founder and president
Craig Rowe hosted a celebration of the new enterprise at the Martini Bar in the
heart of the famed George Street in downtown St. John's. Partygoers were treated
to local delicacies and danced the night away.
Delegates and guests attended the 25th annual Canadian Independent Adjusters'
Association (CIAA) Annual Conference in Montreal, Quebec. Attendees
played a day of golf, enjoyed dinner at Le Cabaret du Roy in Old Montreal and sailed
on a boat cruise through the harbour. Hockey legends Rejean Houle and Yvan Cournoyer
started off Saturday's education sessions with keynote speeches. Afterwards,
local lawyers discussed the courts' interpretations of liability and property
policies, and member adjusters explained their experiences with unusual claims.
The conference came to a close with the president's banquet and ball, when Patti
Kernaghan, president of Kernaghan Adjusters, took the helm as the association's
newest president.
Catlin Canada treated clients to an afternoon lunch on Aug. 21
in the executive suites of the Rexall Centre at York University to watch matches
of the Rogers Cup.
The Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation raised a record $310,000 for colorectal
cancer at its tenth annual Charity Golf Classic fundraiser held
at The Club at Bond Head, Ontario, on Aug.17, 2009. Over the course of its 10-year
existence, the Lew Dunn Charity Golf Classic has helped raise a total of more than
$2 million to aid in the fight against colon cancer. The Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation
and Aviva Canada host the annual charity event in honour of the late Lew Dunn, former
president and CEO of CGU and Aviva Canada, who passed away from colorectal cancer
in 1999. The Foundation raises funds for surgical scholarships specializing in colon
cancer. The scholarship enables the University Health Network, together with
the University of Toronto to train future professionals dedicated to working in
this area of medicine.
Belfor Restoration held its 5th Annual invitational
at Sleepy Hollow Golf & Country Club in Stouffville, Ontario, on Aug. 13. More
than 80 golfers attended and enjoyed lovely weather and great food. Funds raised
during the event went to fight breast cancer.
The Toronto Insurance Women's Association (TIWA) celebrated summer
in style with their 6th Annual Pub Night on July 23. A few hundred
insurance industry guests enjoyed a summer evening at Fionn McCool's in downtown
Toronto
WICC Ontario Chapter teed up for its 10th Annual Golf Tournament
at Angus Glen Golf Club on July 13 to raise funds for research and education in
the fight against cancer. Everyone came out a winner with a Cdn$150,000 cheque presented
to the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. A barbeque lunch, fine dinner,
draw prizes and two silent auctions kept guests entertained throughout the event.
Riverfront Medical Services marked their 20th Anniversary
on July 9 with an evening celebration at Marben Restaurant in Toronto.
Dr. Sheldon Levy, president and medical director, along with Anna Tsaggarelis, executive
director of business development and operations, welcomed more than 170 guests from
the insurance industry to join in the celebrations.
Assured Automotive hosted a Toronto Harbour Charity Cruise
with donations going to the MS Society of Canada. On June 25, 300 guests boarded
the River Gambler — a boat known for its large, 2,000-square-foot dance floor. Guests
were treated to an inspirational speech from Pinball Clemons and the evening was
filled with good food and lots of dancing.
The Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, Ontario Pond, hosted
Tres Chic Martini night at the C Lounge in Toronto. Hundreds of guests
were treated to three different flavours of martinis - shaken, not stirred - in
addition to hors d'oeuvres and great company. The rain held out for the evening
on June 25, and guests were able to spend time connecting both inside and out on
the patio.
Hundreds of people attended an evening of support and celebration for Siobhan
Usher-Post of National Brokers Insurance Services, courtesy of the
Butterfly Kisses and Granting Wishes Fund. The event, the first
for the fund, was held June 23 at the Steam Whistle Brewery in Toronto. Usher-Post,
a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2008 when she was five
months pregnant with twin boys. The event raised funds for a cutting-edge cancer
treatment for Usher-Post, who has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiology and
will begin a pioneering chemical treatment at a cost of Cdn$3,000 a month. "We are
in awe of your steadfastness and nobility of heart and mind, and look forward to
your complete recovery to raise your beautiful sons," fund chairwoman Eileen Green

The insurance industry came out in droves for The Canadian Cancer Society's
Relay For Life. The relay is a celebration of survival and a tribute
to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. In June, teams of 10
people participated in a 12-hour overnight non-competitive relay, taking turns walking,
running or strolling around a track. More than 400 friends and members of the insurance
industry formed teams under the Team WICC banner in 17 different
locations across the country. WICC's headquarters for the event was located at Esther
Shiner Stadium in North York, Ontario. Approximately 200 participants at this location
raised more than Cdn$140,000 in pledges and corporate sponsorships. WICC Ontario
presented a cheque for Cdn$180,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society at the North York
Relay.
The Canadian Association of Insurance Women (CAIW) AGM &
Convention was held at the Toronto Delta Chelsea on June 3-7, 2009.
The annual convention was an opportunity for CAIW members and guests to network
and enhance expertise and knowledge of current industry issues and trends. About
150 people attended from across Canada. Key convention features included business
meetings, networking sessions, CAIW board elections and an Education Day. The annual
CAIW awards were presented at the "Scandinavian Awards Gala," including CAIW's most
prestigious award, Insurance Woman of the Year, won by Debby Johnson from the Nova
Scotia chapter.
The Young Brokers Council (YBC) held its 5th Annual Conference
in Niagara Falls, Ontario between June 3 and 5. Delegates enjoyed a sports-themed
trade show, a mini-IBAO regional meeting, educational seminars and the chance to
network. Debates over credit scoring, possible breaches of the Bank Act and the
retailing of insurance on bank Web sites heated up the conference. Delegates cooled
down with some live music, entertainment and dinner.
The Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association (OIAA) took its
Out-of-Town Meeting to Kingston, Ontario on May 28. More than 600 people
attended the trade show, which showcased more than 90 booths. Delegates managed
to mix business with pleasure, updating their knowledge of case law before attending
dinners and being entertainmented by the likes of a hypnotist and a live band.
Totten Group Insurance's Toronto office kick-started the summer
by building 28 bicycles to be donated to children between the ages
of eight and 10. Fourteen teams assembled the bikes, had them safety checked and
outfitted each cycle with a bell, helmet and lock. Twenty-two students of Holy Angels
School were presented with a bike; another two bikes went to the school for a draw
to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Two bikes went to St. Dorothy School in Rexdale,
where a social worker will distribute them. Two bikes went to The Angel Foundation,
a charity affiliated with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, where the
chief social worker will distribute them. In addition, the following Totten offices
will also be distributing bikes to the charities of their choice: Moncton, Montreal,
London and Winnipeg.
The Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) hosted
its AGM and dinner on May 21 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
ORIMS president Steve Pottle introduced and thanked the 2009 council; he then announced
a Cdn$5,000 donation to Habitat for Humanity before turning the spotlight over to
Dave La Fame, a singer-comedian who can impersonate more than 200 different performers.
Friends and members of the Insurance Brokers of Toronto Region
(IBTR) saddled up for a good time at its annual Friendship Night
on May 7 at Spirale Banquet Hall. Guests enjoyed good food, drinks, loads of prizes
and ample networking opportunities.
More than 100 industry representatives attended the 50th Annual Reception of
the Quarter Century Club, held May 6 at the Hilton International in
Toronto. The event was a roast for Debbie Robinson, executive director for the Canadian
Litigation Counsel (CLC). During the festivities, Gilbertson Davis Emerson LLP and
McCague Peacock Borlack McInnis & Lloyd LLP each donated Cdn$2,000 to Camp Bellaleo
on Belwood Lake.
More wishes will be coming true this year thanks to the 15th Annual Starlight
Insurance Gala, held in support of Starlight Starbright Children's
Foundation. The May 2nd event was black-tie, but that didn't stop guests from "taking
a walk on the wild side" — the theme of the evening. Sixteen wishes were sold, raising
a grand total of Cdn$150,000.
Catlin Canada held an officewarming event at their new Toronto

The Property Casualty Underwriters Club (PCUC) held its Spring
Thaw on April 30 at the Rosewater Room in Toronto. The annual event
added some sunshine to everyone's day. Attendees warmed up to great company, cocktails,
food and special entertainment.

on Apr. 23 in Toronto at Forte Bistro and Lounge. Cunningham Lindsey technical adjusters

The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose International, Ontario Pond
held its 9th Annual Scotch Nosing at the Rosewater Room in Toronto.
More than 150 guests attended the sold-out event and were treated to some of Scotland's
rarest and finest single malts, along with a four-course meal. Ed Patrick, one of
Scotland's finest international scotch whiskey experts, was on hand to share his
expertise. Proceeds of the event were donated to Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade
and the event was sponsored by Blouin Dunn, Barristers & Solicitors, GIffen
Koerth Smart Forensic, Hughes Amys LLP and Masterclean Contracting and Cleaning.
Canadian industry representatives at the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS)'s
2009 Conference in Orlando, Florida gathered for the RIMS Canada Council
(RCC)'s Canada Night Reception at the Peabody Hotel for cocktails
and hors d'oeuvres that included beaver tails. SCM Insurance Services and the Canadian
Litigation Council sponsored the event. During the evening, The RCC donated Cdn$30,000
to the William H. McGannon Foundation. Following suit, SCM Insurance Services also
announced a donation of Cdn$8,500 and the Canadian Litigation Council a donation

Members and friends of the Risk and Insurance Management Society
descended upon Orlando, Florida for the RIMS 2009 Conference on
Apr. 19-23. Delegates kicked off the event at Epcot Centre for an around-the-world-
themed Opening Reception. RIMS president (and proud Canadian) Joe Restoule offered
words of welcome and acknowledged many colleagues were unable to attend the conference
due to difficulties precipitated by the economic recession. Nevertheless, he remained
confident the risk management community would emerge stronger than ever following
the recovery of the economy. After that, it was down to business: delegates were
able to choose from a plethora of educational seminars and peruse the more than
400 exhibitors that filled the exhibit hall.
Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. extended a warm Florida welcome
to Canadian delegates of the Risk and Insurance Management Society in Orlando. The
Moon Fish Restaurant set the stage for Crawford's RIMS dinner,
where delegates were treated to four courses with wine pairings.
Toronto's financial district was filled with the sounds of Mark 'Bird' Stafford,
as CCR celebrated its 8th Annual Blues Night.
Guests, or 'cats,' shed their winter blues and welcomed spring while sampling
hors d'oeuvres and bevies.
WICC Ontario held its 13th annual gala dinner — Zen Garden
— on Apr. 8, 2009 at The Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto. WICC
Dinner co-chair and evening emcee Michael Butler introduced WICC co-chairs Carolyn
Horan and Jean Faulkner, who presented Peter Goodhand, president of the Canadian
Cancer Society, Ontario Division, with a cheque from WICC for Cdn$250,000. Economical
Mutual Insurance Company, Hallmark Insurance Group and Simmlands Insurance each
received a Gold Flame Award. Enterprise Rent-a-Car Canada received the Lew Dunn
Memorial Award. The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose Ontario Pond received the
WICC Hall of Flame Award. Marilyn Horrick, past-dinner chair, recognized WICC Tributes
in a very moving presentation. It was also announced that the Canadian property
and casualty insurance industry has raised more than Cdn$4 million for cancer research
since WICC's inception in 1996.
Brokers, clients and friends gathered for the launch of Chubb Insurance Company
of Canada's MediaGuard, an errors and omissions liability insurance
policy. The event was held at the Canadian Film Centre. Participants enjoyed a short
film produced by the centre, as well as a multi-media presentation about the new
product. The policy provides third-party liability protection against exposures
such as defamation, invasion of privacy, copyright and trademark infringement, misappropriation
and advertising errors and omissions.
Summit Collision CARSTAR, Mascotek CARSTAR Collision and CARSTAR
Collision on St. Clair held a wine and cheese reception
for their insurance industry clients and friends on Mar. 5 at The Royal Ontario
Museum (ROM) in The RBC Glass Room in Toronto. Guests enjoyed present-day edibles
and must-see treasures from the past on a guided tour of the museum.
The first St Baldrick's Shaving the Way to Conquer Kid's Cancer
event took place in New York in 2000, when three (re)insurance executives turned
their traditional St Patrick's Day into a fundraising event for childhood cancer.
They planned to raise money by shaving their heads in solidarity with children suffering
from cancer. They challenged 17 of their friends and colleagues to raise $1,000
each for shaving their heads; in total, they raised more than $100,000. The first
St Baldrick's event in Toronto took place at PJ O'Brien's in 2008. This year about
150 people attended, raising about Cdn$35,000. All the money raised from the event
goes to the Childhood Cancer Foundation in Toronto.
The Flock of The Ontario Pond of the Honourable Order of the
Blue Goose International gathered at the Old Mill in Toronto on Feb.
18 for the 2009 initiation of the Goslings. The evening started
with a dinner and cocktails before Jamie Dunn, custodian of the goslings, presented
the 15 candidates. Only Ontario ganders were present during the ceremony. Jack Fitch,
most loyal grand gander, read the charge and Bob Jackson, most loyal gander, read
the admonition.
The Toronto Insurance Women's Association (TIWA) hosted its
annual wine and cheese reception on Feb. 12. Well over 1,000 guests
indulged in fine culinary offerings, enjoyed live music and raised their wine glasses
with fellow industry peers at this year's reception, held at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre-Constitution Hall.
The CIP Society honoured the newest GTA Fellowship graduates at
this year's Fellows Night held on Feb. 5, 2009. New Fellows were
recognized for their outstanding achievement in completing their FCIP. Lyna Newman,
FCIP, CRM, consultant and retired vice president of human resources and operations
for KRG Insurance Group, was also honoured with the 2008 GTA Fellow of Distinction
Award. Newman has taught courses, served as an examinations marker and chaired the
faculty subcommittee for the Insurance Institute of Ontario. Currently, she participates
on the CIP Society national council and is chair of the ethics subcommittee. She
has also served as the executive director for the board of directors for the Women
in Insurance Cancer Crusade [WICC] Ontario.
More than 150 exhibitors from across Canada showcased the latest and greatest in
the industry at the Ontario Insurance Adjusters' Association (OIAA)'s Professional
Development & Claims Conference in Toronto. In addition to the
trade show, seminars covered a variety of topics including a legal update on accident
benefits, how to become a great recruiter and chronic pain and associated disorders.
Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada fame was the luncheon keynote speaker. He
shared with delegates, memorable moments from his broadcasting career. During the
lunch, the OIAA presented a cheque for [Cdn]$6,845 to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters
of Canada.
Insurance industry guests from the CICMA/CIAA Joint Conference escaped the winter
chill at the 3rd annual CICMA/CIAA Joint Conference Cocktail Party.
The event, hosted by Blouin, Dunn and Giffin Koerth, was held at the Loose Moose
Tap & Grill immediately following the Feb 3 conference.
Hannover Re cheered its clients and friends during its post-renewal
party in Toronto on Feb. 2, at Fionn MacCool's in Toronto. Attendants
enjoyed an evening of German food and beer. A guten abend was had by all.

Dr. David K. Foot, Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto and author
of the best-selling books Boom, Bust & Echo: How to Profit from the Coming Demographic
Shift and Boom, Bust & Echo: Profiting from the Demographic Shift in the 21st
Century was the keynote speaker at The Insurance Institute of Ontario's Toronto
Convocation & Awards Night on Jan. 22, 2009. He spoke to the group
of nearly 350 graduates and their guests about how changing demographics, especially
the aging of the massive Boomer generation and the coming into the marketplace of
their children, the Echo generation, will redefine society's needs, inspiring graduates
to reflect on inherent opportunities and risks within the insurance industry and
their own careers. About 800 guests and graduates attended the graduation of new
Chartered Insurance Professionals, Fellow Chartered Insurance Professionals, General
Insurance Essentials students and Continuing Professional Development students.
It was held in the John Bassett Theatre at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
Nearly 100 members, regional presidents and supporters of the Risk and Insurance
Management Society (RIMS) gathered in New York City to celebrate the inauguration
of RIMS 2009 president Joseph Restoule. Held at the prestigious Harvard
Club on Jan. 8, 2009, attendants toasted the incoming president and celebrated the
accomplishments of immediate past president Janice Ochenkowski. "She has been a
mentor, a coach and a wonderful friend over the past year," Restoule said of Ochenkowski.
"She rallied the team around her, showed unwavering dedication to the elevation
of the society and has been a true leader." Restoule listed Ochenkowski's achievements
over her term, including the development of a risk management maturity model, several
professional development initiatives, the launch of a virtual conference and her
work to reach out to and work with international risk management associations in
Japan, Europe, Latin America and Australia.
The holiday spirit was kicked into high gear when members and friends of the
Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) attended the
2008 ORIMS Christmas Luncheon on Dec. 18 at Toronto's Hilton. Through
the sale of raffle tickets at the event a cash donation of $6,285 was made to the
Daily Bread Food Bank in the name of ORIMS. In addition, 1,500 pounds of nonperishable
food items and more than $600 worth of grocery cards were collected at the event.
At the Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association (OIAA) Holiday Celebration
on Dec. 10, more than 1,000 claims professionals and industry supporters ascended
to the top of the CN Tower for a 360-degree view of Toronto. OIAA president Laurie
Walker welcomed all those who rose to new heights to attend the event. They sampled
food from around the world, and a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales were
donated to Big Brothers and Big Sisters agencies.

industry associates into its corporate office in Toronto on Nov. 27 to celebrate
the holiday season with a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres reception.

Open House on Nov. 27 in Toronto at Montana's The "M" Lounge. Hundreds
of claims professionals and industry friends gathered for the annual event that,
as advertised, and unlike the U.S holiday, was not really about 'football.'
Blue Goose Ontario Pond hosted the annual Christmas Galabration
on Nov. 26 at Brassii Bistro Lounge in Toronto. Approximately 100 Ganders and guests
attended an elegant evening of fellowship, dining and dancing in the true spirit
of the Christmas season. PLMG/WGQ Max Brugger was presented with a 1971 Blue Goose
commemorative edition bottle of Jim Beam Kentucky Bourbon upon his receiving the
'Gander of the Decade' award. After dinner, the Flock enjoyed the amazing sounds
of Terri Oliver and her Band Sugga.
Supreme Collision Centre has opened a fourth location,
this one in Bolton, Ontario, and the PPG CertifiedFirst Network member is taking
extra steps to create a 'green,' environmentally- friendly shop and reduce cycle
times. Ron Doering, general manager and co-owner of the newest location, said his
intention was to do all the right things from the beginning — including employing
PPG Canada's 'Throughput Performance Solutions' system. Marty Reddick, president
of Supreme Collision Centre, Chris Reddick, manager of the Aurora location, and
their father, Bernie Reddick, founder of Supreme Collision, were on hand to meet
and greet insurance and automotive industry guests attending the grand opening of
the shop on Nov. 26. Part of the Supreme Collision Centre's tradition is to give
back to the communities in which it does business; to commemorate the opening of
the new Bolton location, Marty Reddick and Ron Doering together presented a Cdn$2,500
cheque to the Caledon Community Services organization.
CARSTAR Automotive Canada's recent Annual Charity Casino Gala
in support of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) saw more
than 1,000 insurance and vendor partners, employees and friends attend the event.
CARSTAR CEO and president Sam Mercanti presented a cheque for Cdn$117,500 to the
CCFF, the result of fundraising efforts throughout the year. The event was held
on Nov. 21 at Carmen's Banquet Centre in Hamilton, Ontario and featured a 'Copacabana'
theme. Guests were treated to an evening of live entertainment, salsa and samba
dancing, exotic foods, tropical delights and great prizes. To date, CARSTAR has
raised more than Cdn$1.6 million to fund research and treatment in the fight against
cystic fibrosis.
Law firm Hughes Amys held a pre-holiday season
party at Six Steps Restaurant and Lounge in Toronto on Nov. 19. Staff and insurance
industry clients and friends braved an evening snowfall to spend quality time together
as a warm-up to the coming festive season.
W.J. Sutton & Co. celebrated its 30th anniversary
with clients, brokers, markets, friends and family at The Dominion Club at 1 King
St. West in Toronto (formerly a bank) on November 18. The location for the celebration
was ironic as it was in the same location 30 years prior that company founder Bill
Sutton had negotiated a loan at the bank location to start the firm. The Toronto
Maple Leafs was the first client back in 1978. Today, the company writes a wide
range of special risk accident and health risks, and manages Sutton Sportscover
Limited as well as reinsurance brokerage operation, Sutton Re.
The ARC Group Canada held its third annual seminar
and cocktail reception at the St. Andrew's Club & Conference Centre in Toronto
on Nov. 13. Prominent sports industry lawyer Gordon Kirke was a guest speaker at
the seminar. Seminar discussions included insights and debates about mediation and
negotiation styles, strategies and tactics — including problems and solutions in
insurance negotiations. After a successful seminar, delegates continued to discuss
mediation tactics among their peers during a cocktail reception.
The Toronto Insurance Conference (TIC) found its "sweet spot" thanks
to Michael 'Pinball' Clemons, who was the keynote speaker at the 53rd Annual
Black Tie Dinner on Nov. 12 at the Four Seasons Hotel. This year's
event included the presentation of the first annual TIC Awards of Excellence to
an active broker (Jack Lee, vice president and associate and national marketing
manager of BFL) and an active insurer (Robin Spencer, president and CEO of Aviva
Canada Inc.).
After 49 years in the industry, Brian Harris, senior vice president
of corporate compliance for Cunningham Lindsey, will be retiring
on Dec. 30, 2008. Friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate Harris' career at
a retirement party on Nov. 12 at the St. Andrews Club and Conference Centre in Toronto.
Harris has been a member of the Canadian Independent Adjusters' Association (CIAA)
since 1984. He was recently named an honourary life member at the CIAA's AGM.
Friends and members of the Insurance Institute cheered on the Toronto
Argonauts from the Rogers Centre's Summit Lounge as they took on the 2007 Grey Cup
Champions, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, on Oct. 30. The event celebrated the Institute's
newest CIP program ad in the 'Player or Spectator' series.
Special guests Chuck Winters, defensive back, Obed Cetoute, wide receiver (both
for the 2008 Argos) and former Argos coach and general manager Leo Cahill popped
into the event to mingle and help cheer.
The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose's Ontario Pond hosted a
Night at the Races at Woodbine Race Track in Toronto on Oct. 26.
One-hundred and thirty-five ganders and guests braved the frigid night air in a
heated trackside tent for good fun, great food, camaraderie and to raise funds for
WICC [Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade]. They tracked nine horse races with eager
anticipation, although there were no reports of any really big winners aside from
the chosen charity. The event was sponsored by Blakeney Henneberry, Murphy Barristers
Solicitors and Fairview Insurance Brokers. In all, Cdn$12,000 was raised for breast
and prostate cancer research.
Hundreds of delegates and attendees visited with more than 75 exhibitors at the
88th Annual Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario Convention and Exhibition
held Oct. 22-24 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The Guarantee Company
of North America won 'The Best Exhibitor Award.'
Compu-Quote Inc. celebrated its 25th anniversary
in Toronto during the 88th annual IBAO Convention in October. John Savage, Brian
Schwab and Stephen Savage founded the software services company in 1983. For a quarter-century,
Compu-Quote has provided underwriting and rate comparison tools to brokers across
Canada and corporate solutions for insurance companies - from Web-based, consumer-level
comparative auto rating to customized back-end EDI solutions.
Three-hundred and fifty Canadian insurance professionals gathered for the second
annual National Insurance Conference of Canada at the Hilton Lac-Leamy hotel in
Gatineau, Quebec. Senior executives of insurers, brokers, reinsurers, risk managers,
regulators and industry associations from across the country converged to discuss
and debate pertinent issues facing the Canadian insurance market on Oct. 1 - Oct.
3. NICC chose Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC) as its official charity for
the 2008 conference. In all, roughly $11,000 was donated to WICC.
The Fellows of the CIP Society, Toronto Chapter hosted its
annual Golf Tournament at Diamondback Golf Club on Sept. 29 in Richmond
Hill, Ontario.
The opening shots to the 2008 RIMS Canada Conference were fired on Saturday, Sept.
20th with dinners separately hosted by Cunningham Lindsey Canada,
Crawford & Company (Canada), McLarens Canada
and Quelmec Insurance Adjusters being held across Toronto.
Roughly 70 insurance and risk professionals dotted Toronto's waterfront on the morning
of Sept. 21 to participate in the annual William H. McGannon Foundation 5k Fun
Run/Walk. The event, sponsored by FM Global, received
a helping hand from the Canadian Independent Adjusters' Association,
which provided water and spectators to cheer on their colleagues. The title of fastest
male runner went to Jody Draude. Carole Sunohara
earned the title of fastest female runner. Overall, $2,400 was raised.
The Saturday night dinners led delegates right into the draw of GCAN 'Casino
Night' held at Canada's National Ballet School. The next morning, conference
attendees got a much-needed hearty start at the 'Welcome Brunch',
courtesy of Aon Reed Stenhouse. After a day of perusing the Exhibit
Hall, delegates mingled at the 'Opening Reception', sponsored by
Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty and Integro Insurance
Brokers.
Nightlife at the RIMS Canada Conference got a dose of sweet, with a dollop of rock
'n roll. On Sunday night delegates enjoyed Willis Canada's 'Chocolate Decadence.'
And on Monday night Polson Pier (the Docks) set the stage for 'Sedgwick Pub
Night' where Marsh's own 'Tabloid'
served up some funk, rock and pop.
Sunday night provided another opportunity for RIMS delegates to splash out with
various private functions dotting the city. Catlin Canada painted
the town red with their 'Moulin Rouge - An Evening in Paris' soiree at Ultra Supper
Club. BFL Canada hosted a 'Vintage Hollywood Gala' at the Fermenting
Cellar in the Distillery District. And guests set sail with Zurich Canada
at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club.
It was a star-studded speaker line-up at the 2008 RIMS Canada Conference.
One that delivered both rich and emotionally charged content that challenged delegates
to re-think their risk management processes and policies. Among them, Stephen
Lewis, co-director of AIDS-Free World, and former special envoy to
the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, delivered a stirring talk about the AIDS crisis
in Africa and the economic crisis here in North America. Robert F. Kennedy Junior
took to the podium and spurred delegates to action in the environmental crisis facing
Canada and the U.S. From the RIMS community, Joseph Restoule, incoming
president of RIMS, Janice Ochenkowski, president of RIMS, Kim
Hunton, chair of the RIMS Canada council, Mary Roth,
executive director of RIMS, and Nancy Chambers and Susan Meltzer,
co-chairs of the conference, all spoke of the current issues and successes of Canada's
risk management community.
Toronto certainly earned its nickname 'Hollywood North,' when the 80+ exhibitors
at the 2008 RIMS Canada Conference took the Vintage Hollywood theme
to the limit. It was all lights, camera and action as industry members got set for
their booth close-ups in the Exhibit Hall.
In an effort to recruit new talent into the risk management industry, Aon
hosted its third annual Risk Tournament as part of the RIMS Canada
Conference. Sixty-six students participated in the preliminary tournament was played
at the University of Toronto on Sept. 19. In the final round play-off, held at the
conference, David Lu won the grand prize of $5,000 toward tuition,
and Daniel Molnar and Mike Yoo each took home
$2,500 in a tie for second place. "This is a unique opportunity for graduating students
to interact with Aon recruiters in a fun and engaging environment," said Noula
Kondovski, Aon's national talent manager. The Risk Tournament also
provides us with the chance to raise awareness of the multitude of career path opportunities
among prospective recruits."
After many months of preparation, it was all-hands-on-deck as the 2008 RIMS Canada
Conference Toronto kicked-off on September 21st. Dozens of volunteers
from the host chapter ORIMS invested countless hours ensuring that
this major conference was an overwhelming success for all.
The Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) held its 2008 annual general
meeting at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The social program
on Sept. 19 started with a traditional pub fare lunch at the Middle Deck restaurant,
followed by an afternoon Harbour Cruise under sunny skies aboard the Tall Ship Silva.
After reaching shore, the group boarded a bus and headed out to the Shore Club for
a traditional lobster meal.
Collision Solutions Network (CSN)'s 2008 conference was held at
Blue Mountain, Collingwood, Ontario on Sept. 18-20. The 'Elevation' theme focused
on the network's desire to achieve new heights. More than 200 delegates enjoyed
a day of golf, a welcome reception, dinner and a number of guest speakers. The speakers
included George McCarter, Pearson Dunn Insurance; Angela Carter, Dale Carnegie Business
Group; Sam Malatesta, Malatesta Capital Corporation; Glenn Gibson, Crawford &
Company International; Irene Bianchi, RSA; Delando Hawthorne, Akzo Nobel Coatings;
Larry Lythgoe, ING Insurance; and Frank Terlep, Summit Software Solutions.
Members of the Canadian insurance industry convened at the Sheraton Centre Hotel
in Toronto on Sept. 17 to partake in the A.M. Best Company's 2nd Annual Review and
Preview Canada Conference. Speakers touched on all aspects of the market,
including overviews of the state of the property and casualty market in Canada,
investment overviews, rating outlooks and reinsurance updates. The content-rich
conference was followed by a cocktail reception, where delegates were able to mix
and mingle and discuss the day's event.
The Canadian Independent Adjusters' Association (CIAA) held its annual general
meeting in Prince Edward Island Sept. 11-14, 2008. Delegates golfed, attended
the Ballad of Stompin' Tom in Charlottetown, had a lobster and steak dinner at the
Stanhope Bay and Beach Resort and took a trip to the historical Dalvay by the Sea,
where Reno Daigle was inaugurated as president of the association.
Simmlands Insurance held its 2008 Canadian PGA Women's Championship PRO-AM
at Credit Valley Golf & Country Club in Mississauga on Aug. 6 in support of
Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade. More than 30 teams competed for numerous prizes,
including accommodations for eight in Florida and a Nike Golf makeover worth more
than Cdn$2,000. Amateurs from the insurance industry were able to compete against
touring professionals of the Canadian Women's PGA, including defending champion
Salimah Mussani, one day prior to the start of the PGA Women's Championship
More than 350 members of the Honourable Order of the Blue Goose flocked to
Niagara Falls, Ontario in July to attend the 102nd Annual Grand Nest Convention.
Ganders from International Ponds gathered to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of
the Ontario Pond at the event. "This is an exciting time for Blue Goose," said Jack
Fitch, 2008's Most Loyal Grand Gander. "Our Honourable Order is gaining momentum
in its second century. We have seen new Ponds form and have welcomed members from
Australia into our Order."
WICC Ontario Chapter teed up for its 9th Annual Golf Tournament at
Angus Glen Golf Club on July 14th to raise funds for research and education in the
fight against cancer. Everyone came out a winner with a Cdn$225,000 cheque presented
to Peter Goodhand, president of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. A
barbeque lunch, fine dinner, draw prizes and two silent auctions kept guests entertained
throughout the event.
Totten Group held an Open House on July 8 to celebrate the opening
of their new office in Mississauga, which now accommodates both the Brampton and
Mississauga offices of Totten Group. Brokers, insurers, suppliers and staff were
on hand to tour the newly combined facilities, located at 555 Burnhamthorpe Road,
8th Floor, Toronto, Ontario.
Mustang Investigations and Belfor Restoration held the Annual Stampede Charity BBQ
on July 8, 2008 at Cowboys Dance Hall in Calgary, Alberta. The afternoon started
off with a silent action with great success and very generous donations. The BBQ
raised more than $4,000 for the Mustard Seed homeless Shelter and Women in Insurance
Cancer Crusade (WICC). More than 500 insurance adjusters and service providers attended
the BBQ in their best Cowboy attire to support a great cause and put a little giddy-up
in their day.
The Toronto Insurance Women's Association (TIWA) kicked off the summer in
style with their 5th Annual Pub Night on Thursday June 26th. More than 210
insurance industry guests enjoyed a warm summer evening on Montana's rooftop patio
in downtown Toronto. Guests feasted on bbq and imbibed in pints while raising more
than $5,000. Sponsors for the evening included MEA Forensic, Crawford Adjusters,
King Reed & Associates, Giffin Koerth, Steamatic Canada, Servicemaster of Canada
and Investigative Research Group.
With more than 350 golfers enjoying the day, the Ontario Risk and Insurance Mangement
Society (ORIMS) held its Annual Golf Tournament at Deer Creek Golf
and Country Club courses in Ajax, Ont. on June 24. Winners of the Molson Trophy
for Low Gross included Keith McNeil, Andy Boulanger, Jeff Ince, Adam Briklyn. Winners
of the John Labatt Trophy for Low Net included Sandra Cramb, Marguerite Locke, Richard
Nurse, and John Daly. $1,930 was raised for the William H. McGannon Foundation in
draws for 2 mountain bicycles.
Swiss Reinsurance Company Canada held its annual Golf Tournament and Dinner
on June 19th at Woodington Lake Golf Club in Tottenham, ON. A hearty crowd of insurance
and reinsurance industry clients, partners and guests enjoyed the day, which was
organized by Swiss Re's Rob Mittertreiner.
The Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association (CICMA) held its annual
golf tournament on June 11 at the Kleinburg Golf Club. Two hundred-and-sixty
golfers raised Cdn$14,000 for Camp Oochigeas. Camp Oochigeas offers children affected
by childhood cancer a wonderful camp experience.
One hundred and ten friends and members of the Property Casualty Underwriters Club
teed up at the Cardinal Golf Club in Kettleby, Ont. on June 9 for the PCUC Annual
Golf Tournament. Participants enjoyed a dinner afterwards, and the $510
raised by the event was donated to the Children's Wish Foundation.
Members of the Ontario Insurance Adjusters' Association (OIAA) took to Deer
Creek Golf & Banquet Facility in Ajax, Ontario on June 6 for the OIAA Open Annual
Golf Tournament. Four-hundred golfers teed up to raise nearly Cdn$6,700
for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada.
Juno-nominated jazz vocalist Emilie-Claire Barlow crooned the evening away at La
Marquette Restaurant in Toronto on June 5 for the annual Evening of Jazz.
Guests sampled hors d'oeuvres, sipped wine, and enjoyed the terrace of the French-inspired
restaurant - despite the rainy weather. King Reed & Associates, Beard Winter
LLP and McLarens Canada hosted the event.
The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) held its 4th Young Broker
Council (YBC) Conference at the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel and Conference
Centre in Niagara Falls, Ont. between June 4-6. More than 70 YBC members attended
the conference, which included a mini trade show and networking event. The YBC team
leaders are already in the planning stages for next year's conference. Stay tuned

The Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) held its Annual
General Meeting and dinner at the Sheraton Hotel in Toronto on June 4. During
the evening, 17 CRM 2007 graduates received special recognition within their graduating
class of more than 180. Carlotta Brown of Aon Reed Stenhouse was awarded the ORIMS
CRM Award. This award is presented to the individual who achieved the highest total
marks for the three CRM courses during the previous calendar year from across the
ORIMS membership area. ORIMS president Erin Magilton-Morneau noted that her vision
for the upcoming year was to work to increase membership involvement, value and
enjoyment. The evening was wrapped up with entertainment provided by comedian Simon
Cotter.
More than 470 delegates gathered at the Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association
Kawartha/Durham Chapter Out-of-Town Meeting in Peterborough, Ont. on May
29 and May 30. Seminars discussed the role of reconstructive surgery, changes in
restoration and the alternate dispute resolution process. Attendees loved the "cottage
casual" feel of the event and Friday night entertainment, Canadian comedian Ron
James, had the crowd in tears they were laughing so hard. The chapter was proud
to have hosted so many colleagues and friends and appreciated the support.
Friends and family gathered at Quotes in Toronto on May 28 to celebrate the retirement
of Don Roach. The roughly 110 guests regaled stories of Roach's time in
the insurance industry — and with 47 years in the industry, there were definitely
more than a few to tell. Roach spent the first seven years of his insurance career
with a few different outfits before settling for the next 39 years at Aon. What
will he miss most? "Basically my friends," Roach said. "The people that I have associated
with over the years, they are a good bunch of folk and I've made a lot of good friends.
It's not that it's over. I'm going to keep in touch with a lot of the people and,
in fact, I may even be back in the industry doing some contract work or part-time
work depending on what comes up."
The XL Insurance companies hosted a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres reception
on May 28th in the spectacular setting of the University of Toronto's Hart House.
Along with XL colleagues and senior management from across North America, more than
200 of XL's business partners and clients enjoyed the evening within the walls
of Hart House -- considered one of Toronto's architectural masterpieces, with
its soaring stained glass windows, marble floors and oak timbered ceilings.
Earlier this year, ING crossed the finish line once again as sponsor of the
Ottawa Marathon. At the same time, they broke through another finish line
— the one ending the WICC (Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade) Challenge. For the
past four years, WICC and ING Insurance joined forces to challenge brokers, employees
and others in the industry to raise money for cancer research. Almost Cdn$64,000
was raised in 2008, bringing the four-year total to more than Cdn$200,000. KRG Insurance
Brokers was the winner of this year's challenge between teams. Their nine-person
team raised Cdn$18,221.
Guy Carpenter Canada was delighted to host its second (Re)Insurance Industry
Charity Poker and Casino Event for WICC (Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade)
on May 22nd in Toronto. The event was held in the exquisite setting of the Four
Seasons Hotels 'Windows' penthouse salons, on the 32nd floor overlooking
a spectacular view of the Toronto skyline. Seventy guests participated in the charitable
event; they competed for prizes that included the grand prize of four days'
accommodation for two at the world famous Peregrine Lodge in the Queen Charlotte
Islands ($10,000 value). Winner of the poker tournament was Tom MacDowall of GCAN
Insurance.
On Tuesday May 20th the Toronto Insurance Women's Association (TIWA)
held their Annual General Meeting at the Toronto Board of Trade. More than
70 members enjoyed dinner as the election of officers commenced. Zina Tofano stepped
down from her year long reign as president and welcomed Mary Lisi of Firstbrook,
Cassie & Anderson into the role.
Hundreds of industry professionals from all ranks and segments of the insurance
market descended on Spirale Banquet & Convention Centre in Toronto on May 8th
to come-together for 'Friendship Night', presented by the Insurance Brokers
of Toronto Region (IBTR). It was a fun filled evening as industry peers
meeted-and-greeted to the Caribbean music of "Keith Buddle" and his band and enjoyed
a true taste of the Caribbean from the kitchen and bar of Spirale.
More than 120 industry veterans attended the 49th Annual Reception of the Quarter
Century Club, held May 7 at the Hilton International in Toronto. Emcee John
Cherrie welcomed members and presided over the "roast" of Scott 'Scooter' Francis.
Francis started his insurance industry career in 1972 with The Co-operators, before
moving to L.S. Croth for two years. He spent the next 16 years at Cunningham Lindsey,
before joining The Shumka Group. He is now senior vice president and national claims
advocacy leader with Aon Reed Stenhouse.
More wishes will be coming true this year, thanks to the 14th Annual Insurance Charity
Gala in support of Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.
Sold-out with over 480 generous guests attending the black-tie event themed, "The
Roaring Twenties" at The Carlu in Toronto, helping to raise $213,000 for the charity
(includes 22 Wishes). Six 'Fun Centres' will be placed in hospitals selected by
the President level sponsors of the event. According to gala co-chairs Carla Blackmore
and Wendy McCowan, "The gala committee was overwhelmed by the support that we received
from the insurance industry. Everyone we have talked to loved the venue - so we
are going back to The Carlu next year - May 2, 2009. So hold that date so you can
be there with us!".
Canadian industry representatives at the Risk and Insurance Management Society's
(RIMS) 2008 Conference in San Diego gathered for the RIMS Canada Council's 'Canada
Night Reception' on Apr. 29 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina
for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Sponsored by CGI and the
Canadian Litigation Council, the gathering allowed Canadian conference
attendees and guests to connect after a busy San Diego schedule of convention activities,
seminars and exhibits.
All hands were on deck as Canadian delegates set sail and docked in San Diego for
the Risk and Insurance Management Society's (RIMS) 2008 Conference
Apr. 26 - May 1, 2008. It was full and by as conference delegates navigated a sea
of conference hospitality and host events, taking-in all the latest scuttlebutt
and local grog.
The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose International, Ontario Pond
held its 8th annual Scotch Nosing on Apr. 24 at Jamie Kennedy
at the Gardiner in Toronto. Dozens of noses attended this exclusive
event, including an esteemed panel of judges. Throughout the evening, guests sampled
some of Scotland's rarest and finest single malts and enjoyed the expertise
and humorous delivery of Ed Patrick, one of Scotland's finest
international Scotch whiskey experts and the president of the Companions of
the Quaich Whisky Appreciation Society. Proceeds of the event were

On April 21st, HKMB HUB International held its 3rd annual Hockey
Challenge for Charity at Toronto's Air Canada Centre.
In 2006, after insurance industry colleagues chose to pit their hockey skills against
one another for fun, HKMB organized their first Hockey Challenge for Charity game.
The 2007 event held at the RICOH Coliseum, raised more than $2,000
in support of the United Way of Greater Toronto. This year the
United Way as well as WICC (Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade)
were the chosen charities benefiting from the fundraiser. About 30 skaters took
to the ice, representing a broad cross-section of industry "players" - including
insurance companies, brokers, adjusters and suppliers.
Earlier this spring, insurance industry hockey teams, sponsors and organizers came
to Fort Erie and Welland, Ont. to participate in the Ontario General Insurance Hockey
Tournament. The annual tournament celebrated its 27th year and raised an
impressive and unexpected $30,000 for the local chapters of Big Brothers Big Sisters
and Camp McGovern.
The Risk Management Counsel of Canada (RMC), a national network
of law firms that works with the insurance industry, recently held its annual insurance
industry social event at the Steam Whistle Brewing's historic
Roundhouse in Toronto. The event entitled, 'CANAD-OPOLY' included attendee
participation and exposure to regional themed food, entertainment and refreshments.
WICC (the Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade) was chosen as partner
for this event. For each person that accepted their invitation to participate, the
RMC donated a certain amount to WICC. Domenic Venturo, a partner
with RMC member firm Scott Hall LLP, spoke to the audience about
the RMC's decision to turn the event into a benefit for WICC.
PCUC's Spring Thaw Event was held on April 17th, at The Rosewater
Room in Toronto. The annual event added some sunshine to everyone's
day - as attendees warmed-up to great company, cocktails, food, and special entertainment.
CCR held its Seventh Annual Blues Night April 16th, at Fionn MacCool's
in Toronto featuring guest performances from 'Little Bobby and The Jumpstarts' -
one of Toronto's premier blues bands who capture authentic sounds of the 'golden
era' of 1950's blues. Dozens of guests from the (re)insurance communities gathered
for some good food and great music.
The sixth annual GK KOVA Cup drew employees from Aviva Canada
and Giffin Koerth Forensic Engineering together
on Apr. 16 at Moss Park Arena.
Team Blue/Our Faults defeated team White/No Faults by a score of 14-9.
A post-game reception was held at the Pat Quinn Lounge, where
Ron Koerth was awarded the Horse's Ass award for allegedly
assaulting Doug Hurlbutt during the game, while the Herbie
award went to Tom Moran for stopping 80 out of 94
shots on net.
Brokers and industry partners gathered at The Steamwhistle Brewery
in Toronto for the April 3 preview of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario
(IBAO)'s MyInsuranceShopper.ca. The new Web site allows
consumers to obtain online quotes and information from brokers through a single
point of entry, putting the broker front and centre in the battle for online business.
While munching on hors d'oeuvres and sipping pints of Steamwhistle, guests were
treated to a presentation and a sneak peak of the Web site as well as radio ads
that are part of an aggressive marketing campaign for the new service.
The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose, Ontario Pond
hosted their 9th Annual Pool Tournament at the Rivoli
in Toronto on March 26. Dozen's of Ganders and guests competed in the battle for
the pond trophy which was won by Ganders Peter Sutton (IGMS)
and Dave Quesenberry (Evolve Assessments) with
second place going to Team MasterClean's Gander Laurel DiMaso
and Brent Looby.
Welcomed by emcee Marilyn Horrick (WICC Dinner Chair), over 650
industry supporters attended the WICC Ontario 12th gala dinner
- a 'Mardi Gras Soiree' - on March 25th, at The Westin Harbour
Castle Hotel in Toronto. WICC co-chair's Carolyn Horan
and Linda Wahrer presented Peter Goodhand, president
of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division
with the largest cheque ever from WICC for $325,000. Various awards were presented
at the dinner including: Lew Dunn Award: Nancy Thorne; Lew Dunn Award: Linda
Wahrer; Gold Flame Awards: Enterprise-Rent-a-Car (accepting: Alessandro
Orlotti); Guy Carpenter Canada (accepting: Don Callahan);

Tracey Laughlin). WICC also announced that Claude Dussault,

The Guarantee Company of North America held it's Toronto GOLD
Centre Appreciation Reception on Feb. 28th, inviting brokerages across
the GTA and their personal lines team's to join in the festivities. The reception
was held at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.
The Honourable Order of the Blue Goose, Ontario Pond,
held its largest ever, members-only (Ganders), initiation ceremony to welcome more
than 30 new members (Goslings) to the flock on Feb. 20, at the trendy Bravi
Ristorante on Wellington Street in Toronto. Most Loyal Gander Chris
Giffin called the meeting to order, Custodian of the Goslings JP Strasler
presented the new members as being all of good repute, and Social Director Dora
Coemtzis welcomed seventy-five participants in all. The Ontario Pond,
chartered in 1908, is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year and is proud to
host the Blue Goose Grand Nest Convention in Niagara Falls in July
2008.
The Toronto Insurance Women's Association (TIWA) added an extra
splash of red and white to this year's Valentine's Day celebrations when it
hosted its annual wine and cheese reception on Feb. 14. Guests indulged in fine
culinary offerings, enjoyed live music and clinked their wine glasses with fellow
industry peers at this year's reception, which was held at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre — Constitution Hall.
WINMAR recently held a site tour / open house the LM Group
of Companies location in Mississauga to celebrate WINMAR Corporate
announcing the sale of WINMAR Toronto to Luis Salazar, president
of LM Group of Companies (LMGP), David Machado, president of WINMAR
Brampton, and Jad Stammers and Mario Muscat. This
strategic alliance brings WINMAR together with LMGP, a supplier of drying and climate
control equipment and diesel power generators. The venture puts full-service mitigation
and contingency under one roof, and creates the flagship for the WINMAR network
with the largest fleet of commercial restoration equipment on Canadian soil, according
to a WINMAR release.
The Insurance Institute of Canada helped brokers elevate their
game on Feb. 7, with an exciting event entitled 'Player or Spectator' held at Toronto's
historic Roundhouse - home of Steam Whistle Brewing. The social
networking event was complete with food, drinks, contests, prizes, great entertainment
and relationship-building opportunities. Special guest Darryl Sittler,
former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs and producer of the greatest
offensive game in NHL history, with six goals and four assists,
joined the festivities as attendees watched the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the
Montreal Canadians on the big screen. Attendees competed with Sittler
in an exciting 'air hockey' playoff.
Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. held its annual Crawford
Cares WICC cocktail reception on Feb. 6 at P.J. O'Brien Irish Pub
& Restaurant. At the reception, Crawford announced that the
end of 2007 marked a milestone in its Crawford Cares charitable initiative program.
Since its inception in January 2004, Crawford has raised a total of $200,000 for
WICC.
"Crawford's employees have contributed countless hours to make their communities
a better place to live and work," said John Sharoun, Crawford
& Company (Canada)'s chief executive officer. "I'm extremely proud
of all of the work they have done and everything they have accomplished in such
a short period of time." At the reception, Sharoun presented WICC with a cheque
for $40,000 on behalf of Crawford employees and the Crawford Cares program.
Exhibitors were 'working the show' and 'showing their work' with
over 150 exhibits from across Canada showcasing the latest services and products
for the claims industry at the Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association (OIAA)
Claims 2008 Conference and Exhibition held Jan. 30, 2008 at the Metro
Toronto Convention Centre. The extremely popular event for Insurance Claims Professionals
provided a full day of education, enrichment and networking.
On Jan. 29, along with invited guests from the insurance industry, dozens of claims
managers from the CICMA/CIAA Joint Conference and participants
of the OIAA Claims 2008 event attended, "A cocktail party
for claims professionals "Accidents Deconstructed", held at The Loose
Moose and hosted by Giffin Koerth Forensic Engineering; Blouin, Dunn
LLP and Cameron & Associates.
Rt. Honorable Adrienne Clarkson, former governor general of Canada,
was the keynote speaker at the Insurance Institute of Ontario's Toronto
Convocation & Awards Night on Jan. 24, 2008. She spoke to the group
of nearly 200 graduates and their guests about her journey of triumph and turmoil
from a war refugee to governor general of Canada, inspiring graduates as they prepare
to embark upon their own careers. About 800 guests and graduates attended the graduation
of new Chartered Insurance Professionals, Fellow Chartered Insurance Professionals,
General Insurance Essentials students and Continuing Professional Development
students. It was held in the John Bassett Theatre at the Metro
Toronto Convention Centre.
The WICC Alberta Chapter Gold Flame Awards Lunch was held in Calgary
on Jan. 23. The Palomino Room at Stampede Park again proved an
amazing setting for the event. More than 300 people attended to hear an update on
the WICC sponsored project with Dr. Hanne Ostergarrd. The emotional
speech of Peace Hills CEO Diane Brickner, the
banter of comedian Jebb Fink and the presentation of the awards
to Alberta's major sponsors through the past year. WICC Alberta was thrilled that
WICC Ontario Chapter Board member Nancy Ng was
able to attend. Awards were presented to: Royal and SunAlliance,
Peace Hills Insurance, Triad Claims, Toole
Peet Insurance, Godfrey Morrow Insurance, The Jim
Sinclair Charity Golf Tournament Committee, WFG,
Belfor Restoration Services and ING Insurance.
The partners and staff of McCague Peacock Borlack McInnis & Lloyd,
the Ontario member of the Canadian Litigation Counsel, recently
hosted their 12th annual 'Christmas in January' party at
the Design Exchange in Toronto. An industry favorite, this event
attracts people from all sectors of the insurance industry throughout North America.

The Ontario Risk & Insurance Management Society's (ORIMS)
annual Christmas Luncheon in December attracted hundreds of festive
industry partygoers to the Sheraton Centre Toronto, home of the
Toronto 2008 RIMS Canada Conference (September 21-24, 2008). In
the spirit of giving, the ORIMS executive donated the proceeds of the annual charity
raffle to World Vision Canada. World Vision is a Christian relief,
development and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families
and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. ORIMS president Erin Magilton-Morneau
presented World Vision with a cheque for $10,000.
