ServiceMaster Restore of Edmonton Starts Cleanup of Fort McMurray Hospital

Fort McMurray, Alta. – After wildfires destroyed an estimated 2,400 homes and the 90,000 residents of Fort McMurray have been displaced due to the mandatory evacuation, ServiceMaster Restore was the first restoration company provided access to the city.  Through Alberta Health Services, ServiceMaster Restore of Edmonton has been contracted to restore the city’s hospital.

The Northern Lights Regional Health Centre remains intact but still experienced some smoke and residual soot damage.  ServiceMaster Restore of Edmonton owner, Grant Miller, and a crew of 300+ workers started treating the facility on May 13th for smoke and particulate as a result of the fires. “We’re here to eliminate any traces of smoke odour and sanitize all surfaces in order for the facility to be operational,” explains Miller.  He estimates the job to take up to one month to complete given the size of the building and the importance of the task at hand.

On May 17th, two explosions in Fort McMurray damaged 10 additional homes forcing the ServiceMaster Restore crew working in the hospital to be evacuated due to poor air quality and for precautionary reasons.  It is undetermined at this time when the workers will be allowed to return but anticipate it will be a few days, and hope there will be no additional delays.

ServiceMaster Restore of Canada is preparing to deploy several hundred workers from its national franchise network to help with the emergency response and help restore Fort McMurray once residents are given the green light to return home.  Stephan Roy, National Director of ServiceMaster Restore says, “We’re doing everything we can to be best prepared to mobilize our resources.  In these unique and difficult catastrophic events there are many logistical challenges but we are ready to respond.  Our hearts go out to the families that have been evacuated, and the many who don’t know what may be there for them when they return.  We are fortunate to be in a position to help restore the community.”
