Auto insurance rates for consumers in Alberta and Ontario have decreased in the third quarter of 2012 over the same time period last year, suggests a report from insurance website Kanetix.ca.

In Q3 2012, rates in Ontario decreased 5.3% and decreased 5.8% in Alberta, according to the site’s quarterly review of car insurance. Ontario has seen a downward trend in its rates, Kanetix suggests. Its Q2 2012 rates were 6.2% lower than in Q2 2011, and in Q1 they were 3.6% lower, it says.

For Quebec, rates remained stable with a 0.1% increase in Q3 2012 over that time in 2011.

The site uses the average from all its shoppers who obtained quotes then took the next step to purchase insurance, whether from a direct writing company or broker-based insurer.

Its quarterly review from April 2012 had suggested consumers in the three provinces were also taking advantage of discounts for winter tires and roadside assistance, for example.
