DAS Canada is offering Albertans a week of free legal advice around the strict distracted driving legislation that was adopted in that province on Sept. 1.

The law bans the use of hand-held electronic devices while driving. But the province took it one step further and also applied the ban to low-tech distractions, such as reading printed materials and settling down pets in the front seat.

“With the parameters of the legislation being kept vague, the fines issued have been and will continue to be at the discretion of the officer, leaving many drivers at a loss as to their options and right,” says a DAS Canada release.

The company is offering residents a week of free legal advice through a hotline (1-877-88-ADVICE) from Oct. 3 to Oct. 9.

“People don’t realize that if you get a ticket – particularly one that you disagree with – you have options beyond simply paying the fine,” said Barbara Haynes, CEO of DAS Canada.

“Before anyone goes out on the road without a clear understanding of the new law, or takes action on a ticket, they should be calling us for advice. Now they can do so – free of charge – for an entire week.”
