The Ontario Liberals’ proposal of an expert assessor network (EAN) to replace the designated assessment center (DAC) system is going back to the drawing board following consultations.
The proposal is facing revisions, confirms Arthur Lofsky, special assistant to Mike Colle, parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Finance and the man charged with reforming Ontario’s auto insurance system.
While Lofsky could not say what changes would be made at this point, he did comment,” we listened, and we heard some problems [with the proposal] and we’re going to fix them.” He said the changes were based on a great deal of feedback received after the release of a discussion paper on the proposal.
He added that the government is still very committed to replacing the DAC system, which has been criticized as costly and inefficient.
The EAN system involved a network of local doctors who would receive auto accident injury cases referred to them by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO). The hope was to create a system that would process accident victims more quickly, at less cost and to promote objective assessments based on scientific criteria.
A final outline of the program was expected by the end of June, with a system in place by the end of the year.
