The Financial Services Commission of Ontario has updated information it released related to an insurance scam in the province.
On July 29, the regulator issued a warning advising consumers that a company called “Sentel Insurance” is not licensed to do insurance business in Ontario.
FSCO had received information that a company by that name had been placing phone calls to clients of the Royal Bank of Canada and offering identity theft protection insurance on behalf of RBC.
“RBC has since confirmed that calls originating from the phone number 587-880-4306 are from an authorized provider of products and services for the bank known as Famtel,” FSCO said in an update this week. “RBC has also confirmed that this provider does not offer, nor claims to offer, insurance products.”
FSCO said questions about the marketing of these products and services should be directed to RBC at 1-800-769-2511.
The Sentel Insurance warning was one of two insurance fraud-related advisories issued by FSCO this week. On Tuesday, it warned of an auto insurance scam, where an individual called “Jermaine” is claiming to sell auto insurance on behalf of LinkXInsurance.
