The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has launched a new, national on-site insurance information service, the Community Assistance Mobile Pavilion (CAMP), which will be deployed to assist Canadians with insurance questions in the event of a natural catastrophe.
IBC launched the new program on May 3 as part of Emergency Preparedness Week.
CAMP will be deployed by the IBC in consultation with provincial authorities after an event with large-scale insured damage.
Insureds will be able to find CAMP at emergency shelters and community centres manned with trained insurance industry personnel.
“People forced from their home because of a disaster may not have their insurance information with them and that’s where CAMP can help,” IBC president and CEO Don Forgeron said in a release.
“They may not have the name and phone number of their insurance representative,” he added. “And they may not know exactly what their policy covers.
“For example: does it cover the cost of hotel accommodation after they are forced from their home? It’s important to know this information quickly.”
CAMP effectively formalizes a service that IBC has provided in the past. Last year, IBC representatives were on hand to talk with victims of wildfires in Nova Scotia, tornadoes in Ontario and hailstorms in Alberta.
