Tropical Storm Maria, located north of Puerto Rico on Sept. 12, is tracking to hit near Newfoundland on or around Sept. 16.
“Maria is not expected to intensify quickly and may not even reach hurricane status given the strength of winds in the upper atmosphere,” the Canadian Hurricane Centre says in a bulletin about Maria posted online. “So it is very early to anticipate how Maria will affect Atlantic Canada, other than that many computer models bring the storm centre near Newfoundland on Friday.”
The centre is keeping an eye on the track of Maria and is updating the situation regularly.
Currently, Maria’s maximum sustained wind speeds are 85 km-h.
The U.S. National Hurricane Centre says Maria is expected to produce rain accumulations of between two to four inches near Puerto Rico and an isolated maximum amount of six inches of rain over the Virgin Islands.
