Police in Ontario’s York Region are warning about home improvement scams, cautioning residents of the area to determine in advance of a project if their contractors are licensed, properly insured and meet their specific needs.
The York Regional Police (YRP) is currently investigating three incidents of contractor fraud in the City of Vaughan, although police emphasize similar incidents can occur anywhere. Past complaints have included high-pressure sales tactics, confusion over contract terms, poor or incomplete workmanship and overcharging, notes a press release from YRP.
Police recommend that members of the public be vigilant when contracting for services through unofficial, non-reputable or unqualified contractors promising services at lower rates.
Mike Portelance, claim team manager for State Farm Canada, notes that homeowners should be asking potential contractors for references and following up with them. In addition, residents should use the Internet to research contractors and read reviews of their service, workmanship and professionalism before signing on the dotted line.
In a tip sheet on choosing a roofing contractor, State Farm recommends the following:
“If you are asked to pay for the entire job up front, this should raise a red flag,” the YRP reports. Pay by cheque or credit card and make payments as parts of the job are completed.
