Canadian university risk manager on RIMS board

A Canadian risk manager is the new vice president of Risk and Insurance Management Society Inc., New York City-based (RIMS) announced Wednesday.

Steve Pottle – director of risk management services for Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. – was previously treasurer of RIMS.

The 2019 president of RIMS is Gloria Brosius, RIMS announced Wednesday. By day, Brosius works in Loveland, Colorado as director of risk management and insurance for Pinnacle Agriculture Distribution Inc.

RIMS announced Wednesday the composition of its board of directors for 2019.

Pottle is a former president of the RIMS Ontario Chapter. A former risk manager for York University in Toronto, Pottle has worked for Thompson Rivers University in early 2018. Thompson Rivers University used to be known as Cariboo College.

Other Canadians serving in senior positions with RIMS include Nowell Seaman of Saskatoon and Janet Stein of Calgary. Seaman, director of global risk management at Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., was president of RIMS in 2017.

Stein, director of risk management and insurance for the University of Calgary, previously served on the RIMS board of directors. She won the Donald M. Stuart Award in 2013 and was a special advisor for the RIMS Canada conference in Calgary in 2016.

As president of RIMS for 2019, Brosius succeeds Robert Cartwright, who by day is division manager, northeast region for environmental, health, safety and sustainability at Bridgestone Retail Operations LLC.

Brosius joined the RIMS board of directors in 2014.

For 2019, the RIMS treasurer is Laura Langone, senior director of global risk management and insurance for PayPal Inc. This year’s RIMS secretary is Barry Dillard, director of risk strategies, insurance and compliance for Walt Disney World Resorts.

New to the RIMS board in 2019 are David Arick and Gary Nesbit.

Arick is assistant treasurer, global risk management at International Paper Company. Nesbit is senior director of risk management for Young Life.

As past president of RIMS, Cartwright continues to serve on the board.

Other RIMS board members for 2019 are:

  • Ellen Dunkin, senior vice president, general counsel and chief risk officer at Amalgamated Life Insurance Company;
  • Susan Hiteshew, senior director, insurance-Americas for Marriott International Inc.;
  • Soubhagya Parija, senior vice president and chief risk officer of the New York Power Authority;
  • Kristen Peed, director of corporate risk management at CBIZ Inc.
  • Jennifer Santiago, director, risk management at Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation;
  • Patrick Sterling, senior director, legendary people and risk at Texas Roadhouse; and
  • Robert Zhang, China risk and compliance manager for IKEA (China) Investment Co. Ltd.
