Economical Insurance has hired a new personal lines EVP, while The Guarantee Company of North America’s former chief executive officer is now a senior fellow for the C.D. Howe Institute.

Economical welcomes MacDonald to the team

Economical Insurance announced Tuesday that Paul MacDonald will join Waterloo, Ontario-based Economical as executive vice president of personal insurance in January 2018.

He will “support a renewed focus in personal lines across our distribution channels,” Economical CEO Rowan Saunders stated in a release.

MacDonald was previously senior vice president and chief claims officer for RSA Canada. He was also vice president, Canadian operations, for SGI Canada, which is the trade name of Regina-based crown corporation Saskatchewan Government Insurance.

He has done insurance consulting with PricewaterhouseCoopers and held senior leadership positions with Aon Risk Services.

Think tank hires Alister Campbell

The C.D. Howe Institute has appointed Alister Campbell, former CEO of The Guarantee Company of North America, as a senior fellow.

Campbell’s “experience and insights from his career in life and property-casualty insurance will be hugely valuable to the C.D. Howe Institute’s work in these areas,” says William Robson, CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute.

A former CEO and chief agent of Zurich Canada, Campbell has also been a chair of the Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PACICC), which is mandated to respond to policyholder claims if a property and casualty insurer becomes insolvent.

Campbell is a past deputy chair of Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and a former senior vice president of planning and communications at ING Canada Inc. (now Intact Financial Corp.)
