Manitoba records second-worst February for road deaths in two decades

Copyright : Srinrat WuttichaikitcharoenManitoba Public Insurance (MPI) reported nine road deaths in the province last month—making it the second-worst February for road fatalities in two decades.

The province had a total of 13 road deaths throughout the first two months of 2018, which is almost three times higher than in 2017 and twice as high as the five-year average.

“The number of fatalities on Manitoba roadways last month should be a wake-up call to all drivers, particularly with several weeks of winter weather and road conditions still ahead of us,” Ward Keith, MPI’s vice-president of business development, said in a news release

According to preliminary data, nearly half of February’s crashes involved impaired driving. Others involved drivers not wearing seatbelts, speeding and driving too fast for road and weather conditions.
