The Red Hook Criterium is a no-breaks bike race that isn’t sanctioned by any cycling organization and is wholly uninsured.
In 2013, a 15-year-old competitor fractured his nose, eye sockets and jaw. He allegedly received $1,200 from the organizers but it wasn’t nearly enough to cover his $100,000 in medical bills.
Since its beginnings as a Brooklyn birthday party in 2008, the race has expanded to Milan, Barcelona and London.
