Cascade Title Company shouldn’t have coughed up $400 for a lunch at a real estate company’s community service day—Washington puts the kibosh on title insurers sponsoring, subsidizing and providing prizes at promotional events.

The company thought they could pick up the tab because, it says, the lunch was to thank the real estate employees for their volunteer work and there was no shop talk.

Their competitor, who had declined to pay for the meal because of regulations against it, complained to regulators, saying their business with the real estate company had suffered. Cascade will pay a $500 fine for their trouble.
