A new era of risk: Blockchain and the crypto ecosystem

As the world transitions from the physical to the digital, there are new intangible and inherent risks to contend with. Blockchains are revolutionizing transactions with our customers and each other. From contracts to currency, the digital future will arrive sooner than we think. This session will demystify and touch upon key technologies such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies, digital assets, smart contracts and the impact they will have on the insurance industry. Participants will also gain insight into how insurance organizations should be preparing and building strategies around this new era of risk.

MORNING BREAKOUT SESSION OPTIONS

1. Dazed and Confused: An update on cannabis-associated risks and what’s to come

As cannabis-related auto and property losses begin to enter the Canadian legal domain, panelists will explore lessons from other jurisdictions that can be applied in a Canadian context. In particular, participants will discover how legalization has impacted the US insurance industry. Panelists will review automobile claims data as well as explore anticipated and unexpected claims scenarios. Panelists will also explore cannabis use in the workplace and the risk it creates for employers, especially as companies seek to modify their own drug use policies.
