Bob Robichaud, Environment Canada’s Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for Eastern Canada to present on Hurricanes in Canada at ICLR’s June 2012 Friday Forum

June 8, 2012   by Canadian Underwriter magazine

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) is pleased to invite you to participate in a workshop with Bob Robichaud, Environment Canada’s Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for Eastern Canada.

For twenty five years now the Canadian Hurricane Centre (CHC) has been Canada’s authoritative source of information on tropical cyclones: past, present and future. During that time there has been a great maturing of both the CHC and the people of eastern Canada in all matters relating to tropical cyclones.

On the inside, we are better at observing them, understanding them, predicting them, and communicating about them. On the outside, Canadians are better at being aware of them, preparing for them, and responding to messages about them. On this the 25th anniversary of the CHC, a brief history of the centre will be given followed by an overview of tropical cyclones in general.

The presentation will also include a review of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season and conclude with a seasonal outlook for the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season which has already seen two storms prior to its official start.

Robichaud received his B.Sc. in meteorology from Lyndon State College, Vermont in 1995. After a few years as a weather forecaster in the private sector, he joined Environment Canada in 1998 as an aviation forecaster in Gander NL where he eventually became aviation weather program manager for Atlantic Canada. In 2003, Robichaud managed the National Aviation Weather Services contract with NAV CANADA and he has also written a book on aviation weather for eastern Canada.

Robichaud moved to Halifax in 2004 to fill the new warning preparedness meteorologist role in Atlantic Canada where his primary focus is working closely with emergency management officials on a variety of different weather related issues including training, exercising and support during actual weather events.
