Electronic Proof of Auto Insurance Receives Approval in Newfoundland and Labrador

July 30, 2019   by CSIO (Centre for Study of Insurance Operations)

Toronto, ON, July 30, 2019/InsPress –  The Superintendent of Insurance of Newfoundland and Labrador has approved the use of Electronic Proof of Automobile Insurance (EPAI), or eSlips, for drivers in the province. With this approval, Newfoundland and Labrador drivers can now present their eSlips to law enforcement officers during a traffic stop. Approval in Newfoundland and Labrador follows the lead of Nova Scotia, which approved eSlips in January 2018.

In preparation of this long-anticipated announcement from the regulator, CSIO along with its members developed and launched a customer solution in February 2018. The My Proof of Insurance solution – available to CSIO members at no additional cost – was created in response to an evolving customer demand for a more seamless, digital experience with their insurance providers.

According to a January 2018 Insurance Bureau of Canada survey, 74% of respondents want the option of receiving their insurance documents online or electronically. Brokers and insurers using My Proof of Insurance can send their personal and commercial customers an eSlip and other policy documents via email. Customers can then store their eSlips in their smartphone’s digital wallet and access the card at any time, even offline.

Since the launch of the My Proof of Insurance solution last year, broker adoption has been strong and continues to grow significantly across Canada, with Nova Scotia brokers leading the way at 86%, and Newfoundland and Labrador brokers following at 58%. Most major broker management systems have also integrated with My Proof of Insurance allowing brokers to send customers their eSlips without leaving the system.

“CSIO’s My Proof of Insurance solution provides a uniform, standardized digital experience for customers, leveraging technology that many Canadians already use on a daily basis,” says Sean Christie, CIO and VP, Information Services at Gore Mutual and CSIO Chair.

“We applaud the Newfoundland and Labrador government’s decision to approve the use of eSlips,” says Catherine Smola, President and CEO of CSIO. “Electronic proof of auto insurance is an example of the industry collaborating effectively to provide a solution for a consumer pain point. We are continuing to work with stakeholders across Canada and expect regulatory approval in other provinces to follow.”
