Up to three $5,000 university scholarships available

August 21, 2019   by Toronto Insurance Council

TORONTO, ON, August 15, 2019/insPRESS – The Toronto Insurance Council (TIC) is proud to support Canadian students through its university scholarship program. The annual award supports staff and families of TIC members as well as students pursuing a career in property & casualty insurance.

The deadline to apply is Friday, September 27, 2019.

Now in its seventh year, the TIC Scholarship Program aims to raise awareness among talented young Canadians about the fulfilling and diverse career opportunities available within the commercial insurance brokerage industry. Up to three (3) $5,000 scholarships are awarded to full-time students each year. The TIC continues to be grateful to the Insurance Institute of Ontario for managing the program.

When Jessica Miao submitted her application for one of the three available TIC scholarships in 2018 — and won — she was just starting her third year in the Ivey Business School at Western University, pursuing an Honors Business Administration degree. The $5,000 award connected her with members of the TIC community, aided her professional development as a business student, and helped her to finance her $60,000 tuition.

It wasn’t until she met with some family friends who are insurance brokers that she began to understand the many ways brokers help their clients. “I was unaware of all of the responsibilities of an insurance broker,” says Jessica, “and how their role goes beyond the scope of simply selling insurance plans.”

As she prepares to enter her fourth year at Ivey Business School this September, she encourages other students to explore non-traditional finance career paths and consider the value insurance brokers bring to their clients.

Applications for 2019 close September 27 and applicants are encouraged to start gathering their references, transcripts and other supporting information as early as possible. Eligible applicants must be pursuing full-time university undergraduate studies in Canada, and either sponsored by TIC brokers, partners and staff, or planning a career in an insurance brokerage. Selection is based on academic excellence throughout the applicant’s high school and first year post-secondary career, financial need, contribution to school, community life and/or other meaningful pursuits, major accomplishments and a strong indication of academic promise.
