Actuaries should be pleased to hear their career takes the first place spot on a rankings list of 200 jobs by CareerCast.com.

Best job

The job search and resource website ranked the 200 jobs based on environment, income, outlook and stress. Each of those categories also included more specific criteria for ranking, and much of the information used came from the U.S. Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. the site says.

Actuary took the No. 1 spot this year. “I tell people that I can count on one hand the number of days I’ve said, ‘I don’t want to go to work today’,” Cecil Bykerk, an experienced actuary and president of the American Academy of Actuaries told CareerCast.com.

In the No. 2 spot was biomedical engineer, followed by software engineer (which was No. 1 in 2012). Audiologist and financial planner rounded out the top five jobs this year.

Insurance underwriter took the No. 73 spot, while insurance agent wasn’t too far behind at No. 78.

Aerospace engineer was in the middle at No. 100, while newspaper reporter was dead last at No. 200, due mainly to high stress and low pay, according to CareerCast.com.

Notably, university professor was considered the least stressful job for 2013, while jobs in the military were most stressful.

“No two work experiences are guaranteed to be alike, and different career paths cater to unique skills and interests,” the site notes. “Ultimately, only the individual can determine the best job for her or his abilities and passions.”

The full rankings, and more details on where each position falls in terms of environment, income, outlook and stress, is available on CareerCast.com.
