Auto buyers lightly tap brakes in May, first monthly decline since December

TORONTO – New figures show Canadian consumers lightly tapped the brakes in May, with monthly auto sales falling for the first time since December.

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says light vehicle sales in Canada fell 1.5 per cent last month to 194,866 from 197,937 in May 2015.

Dealer New Cars StockHowever, DesRosiers notes that the month had fewer selling days and one less weekend than it did last year.

The market research company says year-to-date sales figures are still up 5.6 per cent compared with this time last year – 798,089 versus 755,582.

In terms of year-to-date totals, Fiat Chrysler is leading the country with 124,663 light vehicles sold, followed by Ford with 121,143 and General Motors at 104,157.

Breaking down the numbers for May, DesRosiers says passenger car sales declined 12.7 per cent to 73,011 from 83,593, while light truck sales – a category that includes pickups, minivans and SUVs – rose 6.6 per cent to 121,855 from 114,344.
