B.C. is rolling out the third phase of its Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) program, with upgraded camera equipment at the sites and 35 more sites added to the roster.
The ISC program is a joint initiative between the provincial government, ICBC and police. In this third phase, the number of intersections will expand from 120 – with 30 film cameras rotating among them – to 140 sites with a dedicated digital camera at each location.
The cameras detect and photograph vehicles running a red light. They are expected to reduce casualty crashes at ISC sites by roughly 6% annually.
Not all cameras will be activated at the same time, an ICBC release says.
“The cameras will be operated strategically, when historical and current data show the risk is greatest. This will maximize both the benefits and cost-effectiveness of the expanded program.”
