The president of a Canadian brokerage is among the recipients of the Enterprising Women of the Year Award for 2013, an award that recognizes excellence among women entrepreneurs.

Joyce Usher-MesianoJoyce Usher-Mesiano, president of National Brokers Insurance Services Inc. and Monarch Intermediaries Inc. is among the winners of the award, presented by Enterprising Women, a U.S. publication focused on women entrepreneurs.

The annual award is considered one of the most prestigious recognition programs for women business owners. Nominees are judged based upon the revenue growth of their company, the leadership they have exhibited in their local communities and/or at the state, national or international levels and the ways in which they have given back to the community.

“The Enterprising Women of the Year Class of 2013 Award is an incredible honour and I am delighted to represent Canada on the winners list,” Usher-Mesiano commented.

Mississauga, Ont.-based National Brokers Insurance Services has grown into a highly-respected brokerage, Usher-Mesiano said, noting its Protector Solution specialized process that the company developed to help clients assess both their assets and liabilities, and create a workable blueprint for a more protected and profitable enterprise.

Her other business, Monarch Intermediaries Inc., offers individual patients, employees of businesses and customers of insurers and financial institutions quick and easy access to second opinions from the world renowned medical professionals and top academic healthcare institutions.

“Despite Canada’s exceptional medical system, individuals diagnosed with critical or life-threatening illnesses may face significant delays and challenges in securing second opinion medical reports verifying their diagnosis, prognosis and most effective treatment plan,” Usher-Mesiano noted.

Usher-Mesiano launched Monarch after her own sister’s battle with cancer was influenced by a second opinion.  “Getting a second opinion changed her sister’s diagnosis and treatment,” she said.

“While treatments here in Canada were not working for her, after the second opinion, we completed additional tests in the U.S. and arrangements were then made for a trial drug to be used here in Canada,” she added.

Usher-Mesiano is a member of the Women Presidents’ Organization, Selected member of United Succes, WEConnect International Certified, Canadian Risk Manager, a member of DWEN, Chair of the Waterloo Insurance Advisory Council, a member of the National Council for Economical Insurance, a committee member of the Toronto Construction Association, a past board member of the Toronto Educational Opportunity Fund,  recipient of the Vaughan Volunteer Recognition Award, a member of school parent council and works along with various education and charitable organizations including cancer, community hospice and ALS.

Winners of the Enterprising Women of the Year award will be recognized at a celebration on April 3-4 at the Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale, Fl.
