Driving behaviour has reportedly improved for 52% of the young drivers in Quebec who are currently taking part in a new auto insurance policy, even if those drivers only recently got insurance through Mobiliz.

The Mobiliz auto insurance policy, launched this past April by Industrial Alliance, Insurance and Financial Services Inc., encourages young people to adopt more responsible driving behaviour through the use of rewards, notes a company statement. The policy seeks to answer the issue of speeding-related accidents and deaths in Quebec, which Industrial Alliance characterizes as still too high.

Based on the pay-as-you-drive model, Mobiliz uses telematics technology to monitor distance travelled as well as speeding, forced acceleration and hard braking. When the program was introduced in April, Industrial Alliance announced it would provide free installation of a GPS-type module to Quebec drivers aged 16 to 24 who join the initiative.

Beyond the initial improvement in participants’ driving behaviour, “it should be emphasized that the majority of them keep pace and keep improving steadily,” says Michel Laurin, president and CEO of operations for Industrial Alliance, Auto and Home Insurance Inc. “Currently, 70% of insured drivers have received a discount on their bill for their good driving behaviour,” Laurin reports.

Results to date “confirm that the positive reinforcement program works and it brings real behaviour change among young drivers, and we are convinced, this will prevent many accidents,” he says.

All operating profits generated by Mobiliz are automatically reinvested into the program to ensure continuous improvement. Adjustments are made to meet the changing needs and expectations expressed by customers.
