The March 2011 earthquake in Japan that caused significant damage in the country also changed its approach to disaster management, a change that will be described in a special presentation from the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction this month.

The June 21 forum will feature Takaaki Kusakabe, a research coordinator for earthquake disaster prevention at the Research Center for Disaster Management in Japan’s National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management.

The presentation will describe the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and its subsequent damage to Japan.

It will also introduce an ongoing study called “Risk and Crisis Management for Excessive and Multiple Actions of Natural Disasters” which aims to reduce disaster losses by considering the lessons learned from the catastrophe.

The forum will be held at ICLR’s downtown Toronto location on June 21 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the presentation will also be available via WebEx webcast.

As part of its ongoing Friday Forum series, ICLR will also be hosting a presentation on June 14 about this year’s Atlantic hurricane season in the Canadian context.

RSVP for both events: Tracy Waddington (twaddington@iclr.org)
