Guy Carpenter and Company and the University of Manitoba have partnered to create a new research chair at the school’s Warren Centre of Actuarial Studies, part of the Asper School of Business.

The Guy Carpenter Chair in Agricultural Risk Management and Insurance is expected to benefit the agricultural industry and teach actuarial students about the property and casualty industry and agricultural business. The university also said it will be able to attract new talent through this chair.

“The actuarial program at the University of Manitoba is one of the oldest and most successful programs in North America and we are proud of our association with it,” Don Callahan, Guy Carpenter Canada’s president and CEO said in a statement. “We look forward to the research that will be funded through the chair and used in solving real-world agricultural challenges.”

The company, which provides risk management and reinsurance intermediary services, will provide $150,000 per year for a minimum of five years for the chair. The chair will be able to direct research on behalf of Guy Carpenter’s crop insurance clients in Canada, and around the world, as well as other interested parties such as stakeholder groups and governments.

The selection process has begun and the University of Manitoba will announce its selected professorship candidate in early 2013.
