Jeff Goy elected chairman of Insurance Institute’s board of governors

The Insurance Institute of Canada has elected S.J. (Jeff) Goy, president and CEO of Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, as chairman of its board of governors.

Goy was elected chairman at the institute’s 65th annual general meeting Tuesday in Quebec City.

The 2018-19 executive committee of the board of governors also includes:

  • Patrick Van Bakel, president and CEO of Crawford and Company (Canada) Inc., as deputy chair
  • Martin Thompson, president and CEO of RSA Canada Group as vice chair, membership-at-large
  • Lynn Oldfield, president and CEO of AIG Insurance Company of Canada, as immediate past chair

Regional vice chairs are:

  • Colin Warnecke – Western provinces
  • Heather Masterson – Ontario
  • François Jean – Québec
  • Paul Croft – Atlantic provinces

Divisional vice chairs are: Anna McCrindell – Academic; Mike Kosturik – Professionals.

 

Aviva appoints new head of SME, commercial insurance

Aviva Canada has appointed Fred Shurbaji as its new head of small to medium enterprise, commercial insurance.

In this role, Shurbaji will be responsible for the growth and development of Aviva’s commercial business. He will start on Nov. 5 and will be based out of Montreal.

He has previous experience with Aviva in Canada, as well as global experience through past roles with Chubb, where he served as chief underwriting officer and senior vice president for Chubb commercial insurance in the United Kingdom. Shurbaji also worked with Chubb in key roles across Canada, including Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

Earlier in his career, he spent time as an underwriter in the United Arab Emirates and is fluent in English, French and Arabic.

The appointment of Shurbaji is the last key executive role outstanding on Aviva Canada’s leadership team following recent appointments by CEO Colm Holmes.

 

CRU Group gains associate director of operations for Western Canada

Adjuster CRU Group recently announced Blair McGregor has joined the company as associate director of operations for Western Canada (for both CRU Group and Maltman International).

The appointment was announced late last week by Jeff Hughes, senior vice president of CRU Group and head of CRU (Catastrophe Response Unit) Claim Services. McGregor will be located in the company’s Calgary office and he will be working to establish both CRU Group and Maltman International’s brands in Western Canada.

McGregor is a multi-line adjuster with a Level Three License in Alberta. He is a recognized expert in liability and property claims and has many years of experience as a manager and team leader with general insurance companies and independent adjusting organizations.

His most recent role dealt with supervision of lawyers’ professional liability claims and as a regional manager with a national adjusting company.
