The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and SMARTRISK recently joined forces in order to create a national injury prevention initiative that aims to help reduce the human and economic costs of injury.
The initiative is responding to the realities of injury in Canada that include the fact that: injury is the leading killer and disabler of Canadians in the prime of their lives and kills more children and young adults than any other cause of death; injuries cost Canadians an estimated $14.7 billion every year in health care expenses and lost productivity, which makes it the fourth highest burden on the health care system; and, despite the toll exacted every year, very few resources are dedicated to either learning more about the causes of injury or putting in place coordinated plans to address injuries.
Currently, Canada spends less than 1% of its health care budget on injury research.
Stan Griffin, president and ceo of IBC, says the organization will soon unveil details of the major SMARTRISK joint initiative along with the launch of a national injury prevention campaign.
SMARTRISK is a national charitable organization that aims to help reduce injuries of all Canadians but places special emphasis on children, youth and seniors.
