The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction will be hosting a seminar on tackling hailstorm losses.

Part of its ongoing Friday Forum series, the Dec. 12 ICLR presentation will host Dr. Tanya Brown, leader research engineer and director of hail research at the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) Research Center.

“Hailstorms consistently cause some of the higher losses for property insurers and reinsurers in the United States, often exceeding $1 billion (US) in a year,” ICLR notes.

In 2010 the IBHS opened its full-scale multi-peril Research Center which includes hail research capabilities. IBHS engineers and scientists use a combination of field research, claims studies, and small- and full-scale laboratory experiments to lead the way towards reducing the hail losses. Results and videos from these studies will be shown at the ICLR event.

Dr. Brown’s responsibilities include providing engineering leadership on hail, wind, water, and roofing-related research projects. Her research focus is on hailstone formation, hail impact testing, field measurements and damage assessment studies. She also serves as the IBHS representative to the RICOWI board of directors and is a faculty associate at Texas Tech University.

The workshop will be held Dec. 12 at ICLR’s Toronto office at 20 Richmond Street East, Suite 210 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
