The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) will be holding a discussion on floodplain management this month as part of its ongoing Friday Forum series.

In southern Ontario, conservation authorities manage floodplains using provincial policies and technical practices that were established decades ago, according to ICLR. Dramatic changes to surface hydrology because of urban development in many areas of southern Ontario, as well as extreme rainfall events, have led to questions around current policies and practices.

The forum, to be held Nov. 15, will explain the current state of floodplain management practice and the need for re-examining the current approach.

The forum will feature Ryan Ness, senior manager of research and development at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

In this role, Ness is responsible for developing policy and technical solutions that allow the conservation authority to fulfill its water resources and ecological conservation mandate in the face of new and emerging challenges.

Ness is a water resources engineer with 15 years experience, 10 of which have been with the TRCA. He is also currently pursuing a PhD in Environment and Resource Studies at the University of Waterloo.

ICLR’s event will be held at its offices at 20 Richmond Street East, Suite 210, in Toronto (10:00 am to 11:30 am). The event will also be streamed live online via Webex webcast (RSVP for details).

RSVP: Tracy Waddington (twaddington@iclr.org)
