ICLR schedules seismic risk workshop in Toronto

The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) has scheduled Feb. 22 a workshop on reducing the risk from earthquakes. 

Ross Stein from the U.S. Geological Survey will be hosting the workshop, titled The Global Earthquake Model: A new approach to calculate, manage, understand and reduce seismic risk worldwide.

It is the first of ICLR’s 2013 series of Friday Forums, which are intended to increase awareness of risks associated with natural hazards.

The Feb. 22 event will start at 10:00 a.m. at 20 Richmond East, Suite 210, in downtown Toronto.

Member companies can send two participants at no cost while a fee of $75 will apply for additional attendees. The cost for non-members is $150 per person.

According to an ICLR brochure, the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) was launched in 2009 by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and “seeks to provide a global standard for seismic risk assessment.”

The second Friday Forum is schedule March 8. The topic has yet to be announced.

Other Friday Forums scheduled by ICLR include: Canadian Wildfire Risk, April 12; Global catastrophes/supply chain, May 24; Hurricane forecast (Canada), June 14; and basement flood reduction, scheduled Oct. 11 in London, Ont. The topic for the Sept. 13 Friday Forum has yet to be announced.
