The Ontario Pond of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, a fraternal organization composed of members of the property and casualty industry, recognized the passing of fellow Gander Doug Hurlbut on Jan. 23, 2011.
“It is with great sorrow that the Pond learned Gander Doug Hurlbut took his Long Last Flight on January 23rd 2011,” the Ontario Pond posted on its Web site. “During his 13 years with the Flock, Doug was a loyal Gander and rarely missed participating in an event.”
Hurlbut, 64, was enjoying retirement after many years of serving as a claims manager with Aviva Canada. Prior to his time at Aviva, he was a claims manager with the Canadian General Insurance Company.
“A member of the Quarter Century Club and past President of the Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association, he enjoyed many friends in the industry and will be sadly missed,” the Pond wrote. “Doug died quietly at St Michaels Hospital after a very brief encounter with cancer, with his wife and sister at his side.”
Hurlbut was the husband of Susan Spierling and brother to Susan Hurlbut-Luna and Randy Luna.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Toronto Western with thanks to the caregivers on 5B, or to the Palliative Care Unit at St Michaels.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Hurlbut’s life at the Eagle Club at 17 Elm St. on Jan. 30 from 1 pm to 7 pm.
A second celebration, Dougstock III, will be held in the spring.
