Stan Griffin, the current president and CEO of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), is one of two board of directors appointed Sept. 28 by the General Insurance OmbudService (GIO).
Dr. Roger Palmer, Ph.D. (Theoretical Physics), of the business school at the University of Alberta also received an appointment to the GIO board. Palmer served as Alberta’s deputy minister of education in 1998, and later became the first deputy minister of Alberta innovation and science in 1999.
GIO, which represents 146 member companies, is an independent, non-profit organization that offers consumer dispute resolution for home, car and business insurance. GIO assists customers and their insurance companies resolve differences in a fair, independent and impartial environment.
Griffin brings more than 25 years of senior executive and industry experience to his role at GIO. Mr. Griffin is a CIP, director of Smartrisk, past director of the Ontario safety league, and has served as a member of several industry and government committees dealing with insurance, road safety and related issues.
Prior to becoming the IBC’s president and CEO, Griffin was president and CEO of Facility Association from August 1999 to June 2001. There, he worked with regulatory bodies and oversaw the operations of the association.
Following the September 11 terrorist attacks, IBC formed a special task force of insurer and reinsurer representatives, chaired by Griffin, to develop a short-term response to the potential shortage of terrorism catastrophe reinsurance.
“We are pleased with the extent of national and industry support for GIO, while equally proud to have these two distinguished members serve on our Board of Directors,” Glenn Williamson, executive director of GIO, says. “We welcome both Roger and Stan and know that their range of professional skills will contribute to GIO’s success.”
