International Civil Aviation Organization delegates discuss sharing conflict zone data at safety conference

MONTREAL – Delegates attending the International Civil Aviation Organization’s safety conference are looking at ways to improve the global tracking of aircraft and sharing information on conflict zones.
Malaysia’s civil aviation chief said Tuesday that real-time tracking is a priority and must be fast-tracked by the body.
Azharuddin Abdul Rahman is taking a firm stand on the tracking issue and told delegates today they should not waste one more day debating it.

There were two unprecedented tragedies involving Malaysia’s major airline last year.

There also appears to be consensus on the need to create a centralized information sharing system, housed on ICAO’s website, that would advise the risks that commercial airlines face in conflict zones.
Member nations, airline officials and industry representatives are among those gathered at the headquarters of ICAO, the United Nations agency that governs civil aviation.
