The Manitoba government is encouraging homeowners in the province to take advantage of a subsidized program to reduce the risk of basement flooding.

The Municipal Sewer Backup Subsidy program came into effect in 2011 and is now offered by 22 municipalities and the province provides half of the cost-shared funds.

The program encourages homeowners to install sewer and home drainage protection equipment, such as in-line backwater valves.

For 2013, the province has allocated $2 million for the program.

“The maximum subsidy offered by municipalities covers 60% of the equipment and installation costs for individual homeowners, up to a maximum per household of $1,000 for in-line backup valves and $2,000 for sump pumps and pits,” according to a government statement.

To date, about 2,300 homes in Manitoba have been protected from sewer backup and basement flooding under the subsidy program, according to the government.
