More than 1,200 brokerages in Canada are now using Transport Layer Security (TLS), or email security, according to the Centre for the Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO).

TLS automatically encrypts emails sent between TLS-enabled parties, protecting them against digital security threats, according to CSIO. TLS operates invisibly and does not have an impact on user experience, the organization noted.

According to a chart published by CSIO, Manitoba has the highest adoption rate, at 72%, followed closely by Ontario at 71%. The lowest adoption rate is in Saskatchewan, where 27% of brokerages have adopted TLS.

“Our purpose in building this TLS Chart was to educate the industry about the TLS adoption rate among our broker members, and hopefully now more brokers will be encouraged to adopt TLS as they see how widespread this important email encryption protocol is,” Ian Ferenci, manager of Technology & Advisory Services at CSIO commented in a statement.

CSIO is encouraging its members to check back with the chart to see how adoption in their province changes.
