Pat Van Bakel will take the reins of Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. as its new president and chief executive officer.

Succeeding John Sharoun, Van Bakel will be responsible for all facets of the Canadian organization, including all services supplied to the Canadian property and casualty insurance market, notes a statement from Crawford & Company. Crawford & Company (Canada) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Crawford & Company in Atlanta.

The transition from Sharoun to Van Bakel was based on a well-structured succession plan that has been ongoing under Sharoun’s leadership for the last few years, the statement notes.

A more than 20-year veteran of Crawford Canada, Van Bakel most recently served as chief operating officer (COO) and has moved through a number of management and special assignments with increasing responsibilities that have positioned him well to take on the new role.

Starting as an adjuster, Van Bakel was named vice president, Claims Operations in 2007, senior vice president of the division in January 2008, and later senior vice president of Operations, Insurer Markets before taking on the COO role in 2012.

Holding a bachelor degree in economics, Van Bakel is a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), chairs and serves on several institute committees, and is incoming deputy president of the Governing Council of the Insurance Institute of Ontario.

“Pat has been an essential member of our senior executive team for many years as he has moved steadily up through several key roles in the company. He is dedicated to our mission and strategy, and I am certain Crawford Canada will benefit from his proven capabilities in his new role,” Kevin B. Frawley, executive vice president and CEO, Property & Casualty, Americas, notes in the statement.

Sharoun, who remains on the Canadian Board of Directors, has been named CEO of specialty markets for the Americas. This division is comprised of energy, marine, aviation, forensic accounting and mining specialty services focused on serving Lloyd’s of London and the international adjusting market.

“John has been instrumental in expanding the capabilities of our Canadian organization and we’re grateful for his hard work and dedication,” Frawley says. “He now brings that same passion for success to his new role leading Specialty Markets for the Americas, and we are confident it will thrive under his leadership.”
