Potentially damaging winds forecast for Newfoundland and Labrador

Environment Canada was advising people to monitor weather conditions and listen for updated statements as a result of potentially damaging winds expected to hit parts of Newfoundland and Labrador on Tuesday. 

“A low-pressure system over the Labrador Sea will continue to intensify as it drifts eastward today,” notes a weather warning for the area of Northern Peninsula East. “Westerly wind gusts reaching up to 110 km/hour are expected in the Canada Bay this morning and will gradually diminish by this afternoon.”

In the Postville – Makkovik area of the province, Environment Canada was calling for wind gusts of 100 km/h, with winds expected to slightly diminish this afternoon as the low moves away.

“Strong winds will combine with freshly fallen snow to give reduced visibilities in blowing snow from Nain to Makkovik. The blowing snow is expected to cease tonight as the winds diminish,” the warning notes.

Environment Canada reports strong winds will continue behind this system today with the strongest winds expected from Nain to Makkovik, gusting to 100 km/h. Winds are expected to slightly diminish this afternoon as the low moves away.

A similar warning was issued for Hopedale and vicinity.
