WAPSKE, N.B. – Three days after they were evacuated from their houses, residents of a small community in northwestern New Brunswick still don’t know when they’ll be able to go home.

About 150 people were told to leave Wapske on Tuesday after a CN freight train derailed and several cars carrying liquid petroleum gas and crude oil erupted in flames.

At a town meeting Thursday night, residents said they were worried about the condition of their homes – and they said they were fearful that their wells could have been contaminated by the wreck.

Resident Samantha Chase says officials with the railway assured her that all well water will be tested to ensure its safety.

CN spokesman Jim Feeny says claims officers have begun working with residents to calculate compensation related to the evacuation and any property damage.

Feeny says it’s too soon to know when people can return home.
