More Canadians will die in car accidents than by any other criminal offence, Bill Blair, Toronto’s chief of police told the Insurance Brokers of Toronto and Region (IBTR).
He put the onus on the drivers to take care behind the wheel and applauded the automotive industry for building safer vehicles. “Independent drivers have become a significant cause of serious injury and carnage on our highways,” said Blair. “We’re working very hard to change driver behaviour and we’re very committed to putting an end to highway deaths.”
The IBTR hosted their January luncheon with keynote speaker, Blair and featured additional guest speakers from both York Region and Toronto Crime Stoppers.
The event welcomed brokers from the Greater Toronto Area and took place at the Sheraton Parkway Hotel.
The chief of police addressed the audience on the ever-changing nature of the city, traffic accidents, and community policing, among other topics.
“As business leaders in our community, we have a role to play,” Blair said regarding community safety. “You should be alert to what your industry and businesses can do.”
Blair had the room laughing wholeheartedly when he thanked the brokers for keeping crime rates down by keeping premiums high.
Toronto Crime Stoppers’ chairman, Lorne Simon, along with Blair thanked the brokers for their generosity in donating $10,000 to the Crime Stoppers School program.
“Thank you so much to the Insurance Brokers, your yearly support, the partnership and highlighting us on this special day,” Simon said. “We look forward to working with you on further partnerships.”
