Tropical Storm Ophelia weakened prior to crossing the southern Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland in the morning of Oct. 3, the Canadian Hurricane Centre reported.
As of 3 p.m. on Oct. 3, the CHC reported the storm had tracked about 325 km east northeast of St. Johns, with speeds of about 70 km-h.
“Rainfall rates of around 20 mm-h were observed over the Burin, Connaigre and Bonavista peninsulas this morning, which resulted in local flooding in some communities,” the hurricane centre reported. “With regard to storm surge, 40 to 60 cm was measured this morning around the Southern Avalon Peninsula; however, the storm crossed the region at low tide, which alleviated potential problems.”
Ophelia was tracking towards Newfoundland as a Category 2 hurricane, but the hurricane centre noted the storm had weakened substantially upon its approach to the province.
