SGI has pledged an annual donation of $200,000 to the Regina QuAppelle Health Region (RQHR) for the Sleep Disorders Program at the Regina General Hospital.
The program serves to diagnose and treat patients with sleep disorders — the most common of which is sleep apnea, a cause of excessive daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea is a major cause of drowsy driving, which is a very serious traffic safety concern, Glenn Hagel, the minister responsible for SGI, said in a statement.
Driving while drowsy is an impairment and can be as serious and as dangerous as driving after drinking.
Early diagnosis and treatment of the disorder will have a positive impact on traffic safety, Hagel maintained.
The funding will allow the Health Region to perform an additional 24 to 32 assessments each month.

The Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society (ORIMS) held its annual general meeting in Toronto, followed by a dinner where Erin Magilton-Morneau took over the presidency position.
Magilton-Morneau, Manulife Financials director of risk and insurance management, served as vice president on the 2006-2007 ORIMS board of directors.
She takes over from Bruce Tainsh, manager of insurance and risk management at Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada.
In her acceptance speech, Magilton-Morneau thanked Tainsh for his dedication to the organization over the past year, and spoke of her enthusiasm for helping to organize the 2008 national conference to be held in Toronto.
