A new poll by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) shows that nearly 1.3 million Ontarians fell asleep or nodded off while driving at least once in the past year, with 100,000 of these drivers doing so on five or more occasions.
The number of fatigued and drowsy drivers in Ontario is a matter of major concern because of the elevated crash risk they pose, Ward Vanlaar, a research associate for TIRF, said in a statement.
These drivers accounted for 5.5 million driving trips during which they fell asleep or nodded off.
The poll also shows that the number of Ontario drivers involved in a fatigued or drowsy driving collision may be as high as 167,000, with no lack of close calls either – over half-million fatigued and drowsy driving trips occurred in which the driver had to brake or steer to avoid a collision.

Derek Holloway, vice president of ENCON, was presented with the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada (ACEC) Chairmans Award for special contribution to the consulting engineering industry.
The award recognizes the exceptional contribution made by Holloway to the work of ACEC in the area of risk management, insurance policies, relationships with clients and contracts, an ACEC statement says, adding that Holloway is the first non-engineer recipient of the award.
Derek has always been available to our association to provide expert advice and we practically consider him a member of the ACEC team – an indispensable one at that, ACEC president, Claude Paul Boivin, said in a statement.
