John Christopher Majore of Ucluelet has pleaded guilty with fraud after confessing to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) and the police that he had tried to get rid of his vehicle so that he could report it stolen and make a false claim, according to the ICBC.
Majore purchased insurance on Sept. 15, 2005 for his 1999 Jeep Cherokee. The very next day, he reported his Jeep stolen.
Majore’s vehicle on Oct. 6, 2005 was involved in a crash in Ontario.
The driver, Robert Broatch, told people the vehicle “was not stolen, but that the owner of the vehicle, Majore, needed money and had given him the Jeep to get rid of,” the ICBC reported in a release.
Broatch was convicted in Ontario Provincial Court of possession of property obtained by crime under s. 354, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
Majore was sentenced to 100 hours community service and two years probation. ICBC has also denied his stolen vehicle claim.
