Three fires are currently raging through the Kelowna area of B.C., forcing more than 11,000 residents to evacuate their homes.
There are three separate fires in the Kelowna area.
One is in the Glenrosa area and is estimated to be roughly 400 hectares in size, according to fire updates from the Vancouver Sun. It is thought to be 60% contained, Kelowna.com reports.
The Rose Valley fire is 150 hectares in size and is 20% contained and surrounded by retardant guards, which are not expected to last, Kelowna.com says.
The Terrace Mountain fire has grown to 1,300 hectares and is moving south away from Shorts Creek, the site notes.
Thus far, the 2009 fires are collectively about 7% of the size of the Kelowna fires in 2003, which resulted in 3,385 insurance claims totalling Cdn$200 million.
In 2003, a 250-square-kilometer (25,000-hectare) fire ravaged through Okanagan Mountain Park, forcing between 30,000 and 50,000 people from their homes and destroying more than 200 houses along the historic Kettle Valley railway line, according to the Times Colonist and the Vancouver Sun.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada is reminding those affected by the 2009 wildfires to contact their insurance representatives.
