The Young Insurance Professionals of Toronto (YIPT) has hosted an insurance careers open house and networking event for students of Ryerson University in Toronto.

Held on Monday, the event was inspired by the Insurance Careers Month initiative, which “had the purpose of raising the profile of the insurance industry and informing students of the benefits of a career in insurance,” the non-profit YIPT said in a press release on Wednesday.

The event included booths for students to reach out to specific insurance companies, along with many young insurance professionals who volunteered at the event to share their experience with the industry. The YIPT reported that the goal next year is to make the event bigger and better “to showcase why a career in insurance is not only stable, rewarding and limitless, but attainable and applicable to many students starting their career search.” The YIPT added that for a long time, the industry has been viewed in a negative light.

Cody Smith, senior underwriter with Intact Insurance, said that the event “was a great experience. We were able to speak with a variety of prospective students and help educate them on the many potential career opportunities in the insurance industry that they may not have known about.”

Garaham Harvey, assistant vice president of Marsh Canada Limited’s aviation practice estimated at 50 or more students attended the event. “There was a broad range of students there from people who’d previously worked in the industry to those that knew little or nothing about insurance and are hoping to find a job and looking for a little direction,” Harvey said. “Regardless of their reasons, I feel like they were all enthusiastic about the event and managed to take something away from the night.”

Representatives from several companies were on hand, including Intact Insurance, the Insurance Institute of Canada’s “Career Connections”, Chubb, Burns & Wilcox Canada, Berkley Canada, Aon, State Farm, Marsh, Jones DesLauriers Insurance Management, Pario Engineering and Environmental Servies, CatIQ, Oracle RMS and Totten Insurance Group.
