Canada has been a little late to the party when it comes to legalizing recreational cannabis. Nine U.S. states have made it legal to smoke pot without requiring a doctor’s letter. See the road map below for a roundup of 420-friendly states.

Fast facts

  • Colorado has more marijuana dispensaries (both medical and recreational) than Starbucks and McDonald’s locations combined.
  • Although it’s legal to possess 2.5 ounces of cannabis in Maine, you can’t buy it anywhere yet. And in nearby Massachusetts, pot sales aren’t expected to start until July.
  • Last year, Oregon used $85 million in marijuana tax revenue to fund schools, state police, public health initiatives and local government.
