ServiceMaster Restore of Saint John Participates in Restoration of Destroyed Church

August 26, 2019   by ServiceMaster of Canada Limited

Bas-Caraquet, NB, Aug. 26, 2019/InsPress/ – Following a devastating fire that destroyed Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Bas-Caraquet, New Brunswick, ServiceMaster was asked to take on a very important component in the restoration process.

The 114 year-old church was the heart of this small Acadian town leaving the community devastated by its loss. The building was underwritten by Ecclesiastical Insurance and when the announcement came of plans to rebuild Senior Claims Specialist, Genèvieve MacEachren, took it upon herself to find the stained glass windows the community deemed essential in the new church. She was fortunate enough to connect with the new owners of Holy Trinity Church in Saint John who were willing to donate three balcony windows. They were made in Germany by the former principal manufacturer of stained glass, Mayer & Co and were said to be the last set built before the factory was bombed during the Second World War.

The next step was to remove the priceless windows, which MacEachren knew was no small task. “I contacted Chris Long at ServiceMaster Restore of Saint John because I knew I could trust him and his team with this delicate project,” said MacEachren. “I have been working with Chris for a number of years and I knew he would bring great care and attention to this very special job.”

The windows were located above the church’s main doors on a tiered balcony level which required the crew to carry each one on their shoulders. They were then painstakingly lowered to the ground floor, crated and sent to Bas-Caraquet where they will be hung in the new Saint Paul’s church.

Chris Long, President of ServiceMaster Restore of Saint John commented, “We were so pleased to be part of this amazing restoration project. To remove and pack such valuable and truly historical pieces of stained glass was an honour and the fact that they’ll be repurposed for new construction in another part of the province made it very special. Our team was privileged and excited to use their skill for this true restoration.”
