Celebrate and Build on the Differences in Gender Leadership

“Women wanting to be in leadership positions should cultivate those traits that distinguish them from men rather than trying to emulate the male leadership style, ” said Sophia Levy-Presner, SVP at Granite Global Solutions. She was speaking at the Federated Press, 11th Women & Leadership Conference in Toronto.

“Many western countries want more women leaders because they are empathetic, communicative, loyal, flexible, intuitive, patient, passionate and selfless.  Their behaviour and decisions tend to be value based. Men are perceived to be more aggressive, analytical, proud and decisive.  There is the need for both in the Boardroom or on the leadership team.”

As a result of women’s leadership traits, organizations with women leaders tend to have cultures with better communications, organization and higher productivity, more inclusivity and better work / life balance. “They are very effective at harnessing the hearts and minds of their employees”, said Sophia.

“But there are still many obstacles in place for women, including our own challenges with reconciling work and home life.  It can be very difficult if you do not have a supporting boss or mentor.

“Women should always define success in their own terms rather than letting those around define it for them. They should acknowledge what is unique about them, whether it is leadership style, way of making decisions, or their ability to take control of their own destiny. And of course, do not let anyone undermine the power of instinct. It is a critical advantage in operating within a complex organization,” she counselled.
