Improving an Individual’s Mental Health Care Pathway

White paper calls for greater collaboration between employer-related services and all primary care providers to improve access and treatment

May 5, 2016, TORONTO — SCM Health Solutions, a market leader in medical assessments and occupational health services, today released its latest white paper, titled “Mental Health Treatment: Changing Perceptions and Changing Needs.”

Shocking mental health numbers continue to be reported in Canada including the most recent figures from a CivicAction survey indicating that mental health issues affect one in two employees in Ontario, specifically the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The current realities of numbers such as these, and the overwhelming demand for access to effective treatment and services, precipitated the paper’s development. The paper focuses on a clear plan of action to mental health care management and recovery, including capitalization on workplace support services through which individuals can access specialized, expert care. This is supplemental to and in conjunction with additional and better coordinated treatment delivered through their primary care providers.

Much can be gained when private employers and public services at all levels come together to embrace and deliver mental health care alternatives,” says Karen Seward, President of SCM Health Solutions. “We know that mental health issues represent over one third of all short-term and long-term disability claims, and 70% of short-term and long-term disability costs. Early and proper mental health assessments with a confirmed diagnosis will help primary care providers deliver on a clear plan of action, one aimed at optimal return to functionality.”

The paper further recognizes and outlines the impediments to treatment as well as the complicated task of making an effective mental health diagnosis. It emphatically pushes for the multi-provider, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment to reduce the considerable strain on Canada’s provincial health care systems.

“We simply need additional public provider and private partner engagement strategies with a defined model to work within,” continues Seward. “This is key to making significant and positive change in our approach to care.”
